How to lay peel and stick vinyl flooring

Updated: 16.10.2026

The pack is in the hall and you want it down this weekend without a lifted edge on Monday. How to lay peel and stick vinyl flooring comes down to the floor you stick it to, and to peeling a little backing at a time. The [vinyl floor comparison](/hub/flooring/vinyl-floor) is the product table. Products Compared used the amazon.co.uk reviews on 15 October 2026 and did not lay a floor. If the floor is damp, badly out of flat, or might contain asbestos, stop before any paper comes off. Sweep and vacuum first. These listings ask for a smooth, flat, dry surface, and they do not include an underlay.

Prepare the floor before you peel anything

Sweep, vacuum, and take off polish, grease, and flaky paint. Check flatness the way UK vinyl guidance cites BS 8203: less than 3 mm under a 2 m straightedge, the SR1 idea. A ridge you can feel will show through 0.6 mm, which is what NUFLR reviewers describe. Unroll a curled pack and weight it flat before you peel. Lareko’s planks and the rolls arrive curled. FLOREXP alone asks for a 2 mm wall gap on cold days.

Mark a line, dry-lay, and stagger the joints

Once the floor will take glue, plan the cuts on the dry pieces. For planks, snap a line parallel to the longest wall and start there. For squares, find the centre and dry-lay so the perimeter cuts match. Homebuilding’s tile method is the same dry-lay from the centre before any backing comes off. EasyFloor reviewers who tried a herringbone with a border lost the geometry without a centre line. Open both boxes before you stick the first row if the shade might differ. One EasyFloor delivery arrived in the wrong colour.

Peel in sections and cut on the face

Peel half the backing, line the piece up, press it, then peel the rest. Homebuilding describes that half-peel and says you can walk on self-adhesive tiles once they are down. NUFLR and FLOREXP reviews are the warning: pull the whole paper at once and the adhesive goes everywhere, the paper tears, and you get gaps. ATOPOSE is the other problem in a small bathroom. The glue grabs while you are still aligning a cut, and one reviewer got adhesive on the skirting and the side of the bath. Cut with the film still on, against a metal straight edge. For a basin or a pipe, make a cardboard template and transfer it, rather than offering the sticky face to the porcelain. Press from the centre outwards. Fresh FLOREXP planks can creep for about a day, so leave the door until the row has settled.

If it lifts, the usual causes are dust, hollows, and no pressure

Which? saw flat concrete hold and indented vinyl let go until more glue was used. Spray glue shows up as a rescue in several of these review files, including a FLOREXP floor still down after about two years. A second glue can help a corner that was never pressed. It will not stick a pack to a damp screed. A lifted bathroom edge is a water path, so read vinyl flooring for bathrooms before you seal it.

Stop when the floor is damp, suspect, or a flat

Stop when the screed is still damp. Glue on a wet slab fails, and the water stays under the film. Stop if the existing tiles might contain asbestos, and do not sand or grind them. In a flat, these films have no acoustic rating. Approved Document E is the sound rule for separating floors. Stop for stairs as well. The adhesive is not there to carry you on a tread. On a clean, dry, flat rectangle the sequence is short: flatten, dry-lay, peel in sections, press, and keep off a fresh edge until it has settled.

Common questions

Do I need underlay?
These peel-and-stick packs do not list an underlay. The glue has to meet a clean floor. Click-vinyl foam is for a floating board, which is a different product. A bump in the subfloor will show through, especially at 0.6 mm. Level the floor, or choose another covering. A cushion under the sticker gives the glue nothing firm to hold.
How long should the pack sit in the room?
Leave it in the room for at least a day, which matches ManoMano’s self-adhesive note, and weight a curled roll flat in that time. Forbo keeps its own vinyl at 18–27°C for 48 hours around the installation, and Harvey Maria uses the same temperature band. Those figures belong to their floors. A cold amazon pack is still stiffer, so a chilly garage is a poor place to start.
Where do I start, the wall or the centre?
Start planks from a straight line parallel to the main wall, and stagger the ends by at least one and a half plank widths. Start square tiles from the centre so the cut border is even. Dry-lay either way before you peel. A herringbone needs that centre line even more, because EasyFloor reviewers lost the geometry once the border began. The first row decides the rest.
How do I cut the last plank?
Leave the backing on, mark from a template or the previous row, and cut with a utility knife against a straight edge. Strong scissors work on the thinner sheets. Score-and-snap shows up in FLOREXP reviews. Cut the piece slightly tight rather than forcing a sticky oversize piece under the skirting. Around a basin, cardboard first saves a ruined plank.
Why do the edges lift the next day?
Dust, a hollow, or adhesive that never saw any pressure. Lareko roll reviews describe edges up by day two. EasyFloor pieces lifted until they were weighted overnight. FLOREXP’s factory glue was uneven inside one pack. Clean and press before you add a spray. Several buyers used a spray, and a damp floor will lift again after you glue it.
