Coir vs rubber doormat

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing a mat for a UK front door, and the two photos look alike: a brown rectangle, a grip claim, and a price under £30. Coir vs rubber doormat is a question about the job. Coir scrapes mud when the mat stays dry enough. Rubber is the better buy when the mat lives in the rain. The [Coconut mat comparison](/hub/flooring/coconut-mat) stays inside coir. This page can send you out of that category. Products Compared used UK matting guides and the backed coir listings as printed on 19 October 2026. We did not include a solid rubber mat or run a wear test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Coir scrapes, rubber survives rain

Coir is coconut-husk fibre. The stiff pile knocks soil off a boot. Rubber, as a whole mat rather than a thin back, sheds water, can be hosed, and stays a grip surface when it is wet. Rugstars UK puts coir on covered entrances and rubber on exposed weather. Rubberco's outdoor notes make the same split: coir for covered porches and mat wells, rubber for fully exposed use. Make An Entrance adds a two-mat idea. A scraper comes first, then a mat that holds the water the scraper missed. Those sites also print year ranges. Treat any lifespan line as that seller's estimate, not as a result from this comparison. If the mat will be rained on most days, choose rubber. If it will be under cover and you care about scrape, choose coir.

When coir is the better buy

Choose coir when the mat is indoors or under a covered porch and you want that scrape. In this set that means PVC-backed or rubber-backed coconut fibre, not traditional coir woven so water drains. The FloorPro strip is the plain piece you can cut. The Nicola Spring mat is the small printed one. Neither is a hose-down mat, whatever the outdoor bullet says. Skip coir when the step is open, when you hose the mat every week, or when wheelchairs and sticks must cross it. BS 8300 guidance says coir should not be used where that access is required. If the door is covered and you only have room for one mat, that one coir mat is a compromise. Porch versus open step is on coir mat outdoor.

When rubber is the better buy

Choose rubber when the mat lives in the rain, in a garage that gets hosed, or on an open back step. You can wash rubber down. You should not do that to the coir in this comparison. Non-slip on a coir listing is only a backing, not a BS 7976 number, and a rubber mat from another listing still needs its own stated surface. This category kept no solid rubber ASIN. Listings whose walking surface was not coir were left out of the table. If you can fit two mats, use Make An Entrance's order. Put a scraper at the door, then something that holds the water the scraper missed. The scraper can be coir under cover. The mat in the rain should be rubber. A lease that specifies contract matting, or a mat well that needs building work, is a fitter's job, not a doormat from this set.

Rubber-backed coir is still coir

A rubber or PVC underside under coconut fibre does not turn the mat into a rubber doormat. The face is still coir. It still sheds, and rain on that sealed back is still the problem the guides describe. Pro Home names rubber as the back, with three reviews. Nicola Spring, LUA VIKA, COCONIQ, and the FloorPro 50 × 100 cm file name PVC. The other two FloorPro sizes do not name a back. Buy coir if the spot is indoors or under a covered porch and you want scrape. Buy rubber, from outside this table, if the step is open to rain. Size and pile, if you stay with coir, are on the coir doormat buying guide. If the mat you already own is only dirty, the steps are on how to clean a coir doormat.

Common questions

Is coir or rubber better outside?
Rubber, if outside means an open step in British rain. Coir is the better scraper when the mat stays under a porch or indoors. PVC-backed coir is a poor match for standing rain because water sits on the back. An outdoor bullet on a backed mat does not overturn that.
Can you hose a coir mat the way you hose rubber?
No. Hosing soaks the fibre and the sealed back. Care lines in this set say hand wash only, dry clean only, or shake and brush, and COCONIQ says avoid contact with water. Rubber mats in UK outdoor ranges are sold to be washed down. That is a reason to buy rubber for an open step, not a way to clean these coir mats.
Is a rubber-backed coir mat a rubber mat?
No. The walking surface is still coir. Pro Home names a rubber back, and several others name PVC. The back can stop the mat sliding on a hard floor. It does not make the face waterproof or fit to leave on a drive. If you need a mat that lives in the rain, buy a rubber mat, not coir with a rubber underside.
Which should you choose for a garage or an open back step?
Rubber, when the garage floor gets hosed or the back step is open to rain. Coir from this comparison is for a covered porch or a hall. Pro Home's indoor-and-outdoor line, on three reviews, does not change that. If the mat sits just inside a dry garage, a coir scraper can still make sense there.
Does rubber replace coir indoors as well?
Not if you want the scrape. Rubber indoors is easier to wipe, and it will not scrape dried mud the way a 17 mm coir pile does. Many halls work better with coir inside the door and rubber on the wet step.
