How to clean a coir doormat

Updated: October 2026

The mat is full of mud and you are about to put it in the washing machine because a seller bullet said you could. How to clean a coir doormat, for the mats in this comparison, is a dry job: shake gently, let the mud dry, brush, and keep water to a minimum. The [Coconut mat comparison](/hub/flooring/coconut-mat) is where the listings sit. This page assumes you already own one. Products Compared followed UK care guides and the care lines on the amazon.co.uk pages, dated 19 October 2026. We did not wash a sample in a lab. Do not machine-wash a coir mat

Make An Entrance, Mats4U, and Good Housekeeping UK say coir is not a washing-machine fibre. Good Housekeeping's UK advice is to ignore a machine-wash label on coir and clean it dry. IKEA's STAVREBY page for the UK says do not wash, bleach, tumble, iron, or dry-clean. That IKEA mat is not an ASIN here. Follow it when a marketplace bullet disagrees. None of the care lines in this set is a safe machine cycle. Nicola Spring and two FloorPro sizes say hand wash only. FloorPro 75 × 100 cm and LUA VIKA say dry clean only. COCONIQ says avoid contact with water. Pro Home's bullets say shake or brush. Do not import a machine-washable-at-30°C claim onto these mats. If the mat is already soaked, lift it, which is the placement problem on coir mat outdoor.

Shake, dry, then brush

Take the mat outside, hold the ends, and shake so the loose grit drops. Do not whip it against a wall or beat the backing. One COCONIQ reviewer split the mat by about 6 inches. One LUA VIKA reviewer shook it, it ripped, and they returned it. Shake gently, and stop if the backing starts to tear. Let dried mud sit until it is no longer paste, then brush across the pile outside. Wet mud brushed in place becomes a smear. If you must vacuum, use low suction and a brush head. The Business Mat People warn that a strong vacuum pulls the fibre out. Spot-clean with as little water as the care line allows, then dry the mat flat, off the floor. A hose is for a rubber mat, not for these coir mats.

Shedding is not the same as a split

New coir drops fibre. COBA's datasheet treats early shedding as bedding-in, not as a failed mat. FloorPro reviewers often say it sheds very little after months of use. Loose fibre in the first weeks is usual. Vacuum the floor, not the mat on full power. A split is different. If the backing opens, or the mat rips when you shake it, that is a fault. Those reviews are examples from the files, not a claim that every mat of the brand will tear. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the short-term right to reject faulty goods lasts 30 days. A 14-day change-of-mind cancellation is a different right. This page is not a legal opinion. If the mat arrives already ripped, photograph it before you try to clean a tear.

Spills, dye, and the floor underneath

Water and dye do not behave like dust. Nicola Spring's specification says stain resistant, and one UK review says any liquid stained the mat on the first day. COCONIQ's care line says the mat may stain a damp surface, which can mean the floor as well as the coir. Lift the mat, sweep or mop underneath, and let both dry before the mat goes down again. A mat left on a damp hall floor can mark the boards even when the face still looks fine. Nothing in these listings describes a stain remover that works, and the guides say no solvents. Two LUA VIKA reviews mention fade, and fade is also in the COCONIQ file. That is daylight wear, not dirt you can brush off. A ruined face is a replacement, not a longer wash. Which mat is worth buying again is on best coir doormat.

Common questions

Can you put a coir doormat in the washing machine?
No. Make An Entrance, Mats4U, and Good Housekeeping UK say coir is not a machine-wash fibre, even if a seller bullet says otherwise. In this set the care lines say hand wash only, dry clean only, or shake and brush. IKEA's UK STAVREBY page says do not wash, bleach, tumble, iron, or dry-clean. That mat is not an ASIN here.
Should you vacuum a coir mat?
Only on low suction, with a brush head, and only if shaking is not enough. The Business Mat People warn that a strong vacuum pulls tufted coir out. A weekly shake and a brush on dried mud is the method these guides describe. If the backing starts to lift while you vacuum, stop. That is damage, not a deeper clean.
What if the mat rips when you shake it?
Stop shaking it. A rip is a fault in the reviews we have, not a cleaning step. One COCONIQ reviewer split a mat by about 6 inches. One LUA VIKA reviewer returned a ripped mat. One Nicola Spring mat arrived already ripped. Photograph the tear and use the order channel. This is not a full statement of your rights.
Will water stain a printed coir mat?
It can. Nicola Spring's page says stain resistant, and one review says liquid stained the mat on the first day. COCONIQ's care line says avoid water and that the mat may stain a damp surface. Nothing in these listings names a cleaner that lifts dye. Blot with as little water as the care line allows, dry the mat flat, and do not expect the print to look new.
How do you clean the floor under the mat?
Lift the mat, sweep or mop the tile or the wood, and let the floor dry before the mat goes back. IKEA's UK care note for STAVREBY says to clean underneath, and COCONIQ warns that a damp surface can stain. Dry the floor and the backing, not just the face you can see.
