Hand tamper buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

This hand tamper buying guide is the order of questions when you are bedding a few slabs or firming a shed pad. The eight manual tools are on the [Tamping rammer](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/tamping-rammer) comparison. A hire desk uses the same words for a petrol trench rammer of about 68 kg. Every kept amazon.co.uk listing is a hand head you lift and drop, from 2.1 kg to 5.4 kg and £23.99 to £46.99. Read the job, the kilogram line, the plate, and whether the shaft unscrews, before the stars. Peter F. checked those public listings on 20 October 2026. No lab compaction test was run. What you are actually buying

A hand tamper is a flat metal face on a long handle. You raise it and let the mass land. It does not vibrate, it has no engine, and it prints no kilonewton figure. That is the mechanism behind Harbour Housewares, DFENG, Amtech, OENBATOM, Gekufa, Walensee, Roughneck and BlumeTrec. If you wanted a jumping jack for a clay trench, this set will not supply it. The tamper versus wacker plate page separates the hand head, the vibrating plate and the petrol trench rammer. Reviews describe patches, edges, post holes and bases of a few square metres. An open drive, or clay that needs impact at depth, is a hired plate or a hired petrol rammer.

Weight and plate

Specification weights, lightest first, are DFENG 2.1 kg, Gekufa 2.43 kg, Harbour Housewares 4 kg, Walensee 4.08 kg, OENBATOM 4.1 kg, Amtech 5.02 kg, BlumeTrec 5.32 kg and Roughneck 5.4 kg on amazon.co.uk. Use that line when a title says 5 kg and the specification says 2.1 kg. Gekufa at about £37.99 and 2.43 kg is a different mass class from Walensee at about £38.99 and 4.08 kg. Six tools state a face of about 20 × 20 cm. BlumeTrec is 25.5 × 25.5 cm. Amtech states no square. Its item width is 13 cm, and the length conflicts: the title says 115 cm and the specification says 124 cm. Leave 13 cm as a width, not a 13 × 13 cm plate. Roughneck's amazon item weight is 5.4 kg, with no handle length on that file. Toolstation lists the same ROU64379 at 4.5 kg and 1,065 mm. Keep both figures. The how to use a hand tamper page treats layer thickness as the control.

One piece or bolted

Sectional steel stores in a shorter box. Harbour Housewares, DFENG, OENBATOM, Gekufa, Walensee and BlumeTrec arrive in pieces and bolt or screw together. Loose joints are the pattern in the reviews. Harbour's three reviews mention disputed bolts. Walensee's sample includes bolts that loosen and, in one report, a missing Allen key. Roughneck is one fibreglass handle and a cast-iron head, so a loose joint is outside its failure mode. Reviews worry about cracking if the shaft is slammed, and damp soil sticks to the face. Amtech is not sold as a tube kit. Its plate size remains unstated, so you are buying mass and a review sample. Leave a sectional shaft if you will not retighten it.

What the price bands buy

Entry prices, about £23.99 to £32.99, are Harbour Housewares and DFENG, with three and four reviews. Harbour is a 4 kg three-piece iron head, with loose joints in those reviews. DFENG is the 2.1 kg head whose plate one reviewer found proud by about 1–2 mm. The middle band, about £33.99 to £38.99, holds Amtech, OENBATOM, Gekufa and Walensee. Amtech at about £33.99 brings 5.02 kg and 4.6 from 196 reviews: price, mass and sample, with the plate size still unknown. The upper band, about £45.99 to £46.99, is Roughneck, the one-piece cast-iron head, and BlumeTrec, the wider sectional plate at 5.32 kg. Hire a plate once the area is an open Type 1 sub-base under a car.

Common questions

Is a tamping rammer the same as a hand tamper?
On a UK hire desk, tamping rammer usually means a petrol trench machine of about 68 kg. In this amazon.co.uk set it means a manual earth rammer, also called a hand tamper: a metal face on a handle, specification weight 2.1 kg to 5.4 kg, and no engine. If you needed the petrol machine, none of these eight listings is that tool. Use the kilogram line on the specification, and read the search phrase as a label that covers two different machines.
Why do bolts come loose?
A sectional tamper is several tubes and a head, and each drop loads the joints. Reviews on Harbour and Walensee describe joints that loosen, and one Walensee buyer reported a missing Allen key. Retighten before the first drop and again when you hear a click. A one-piece handle has no such joint. Its own limit appears if you slam a fibreglass shaft, which reviews link with cracking worries on the Roughneck.
Does 5.0 from five reviews outrank 4.7 from 754?
OENBATOM's 5.0 from five reviews is a perfect line on a very small sample. Roughneck's 4.7 from 754 and Walensee's 4.5 from 1,650 tell you more about what owners attempted. Stars are not a compaction test. Read the kilogram line, the plate and the handle build before you sort the table by rating. A perfect score on five reviews can sit on a tool you have not seen enough of.
What if the title says 5 kg and the tool weighs about 2 kg?
Believe the specification item weight. DFENG is listed at 2.1 kg, and reviewers rejected a claim of about 5 kg after they weighed it. Gekufa is 2.43 kg beside tools at 4 kg and above that cost a similar amount. If the tool that arrives does not match the description, that is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 point with the seller. Hitting a thicker layer will not add the missing kilograms.
When do I stop comparing hand tools and hire a plate?
Stop when the area is an open Type 1 sub-base, especially under a vehicle, or when a thick loose layer still moves after you have worked it in thin lifts. Pavingexpert treats a plate as the normal compactor and a hand method as the lighter-duty alternative, with sub-base layers no thicker than 150 mm. Hire prices are not printed in the sources behind this page. The versus guide is the next step.
