How to fit a self-adhesive skirting board

Updated: 21 October 2026

The roll is in the room, the first wall is straight, and one corner is still bare. The usual failure is a twisted first metre, a line that drifts, or tape pressed onto dust. External corners get bent around the angle instead of cut. This is the order of work for a peel-and-stick PVC or vinyl strip. Peter F. did not fit these rolls. If the wall is wet, read [waterproof skirting board for a bathroom or kitchen](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/soft-skirting-board/sub/soft-skirting-board-bathroom-kitchen) before you stick anything.

Prepare the wall and the roll

Vacuum the joint, then wipe off grease. Truly PVC wants the wall dry, dust-free and grease-free. Quest Profile’s UK page specifies isopropyl alcohol. Sugar soap can work if you rinse and dry it. Textured plaster, new plasterboard, woodchip and wallpaper hold less well. Temperature is three manufacturers. Truly PVC says at least 15°C, Quest at least 16°C, and Primo does not recommend fitting its soft mouldings below 18°C. A cold morning at 12°C is a reason to wait. Unroll the coil indoors and do not stretch it. Primo says stretching soft PVC is how it creeps back and lifts. Blown plaster or a damp wall is a repair, not a fitting job.

Stick a straight run

On an L-tape, put the floor leg down first and keep the crease consistent. A flat 10 cm cover has no floor leg: align the bottom edge and press upwards. Peel half a metre of film, press it, then peel the next length. Quest’s note is blunt: the first stick is the one that counts. Reviews on the wide VCANIVR rolls, the shared 3.9 from 241 pool, say the line wanders. If the strip starts to twist, stop. Tightening is the stretch Primo tells you to avoid. Cut the end square at a door frame.

Internal and external corners

An internal corner on an L-tape is a cut. Truly PVC’s guide takes a 45° triangle out of the floor leg so the wall leg can turn and the floor legs meet. Scissors or a knife are enough. An external corner is two pieces, each with a mirrored 45°, so the floor legs butt. Wickes’ scribe-and-mitre guide is for rigid board. Soft tape has no thickness to scribe into. A 15 mm JSIWOTH quarter-round can follow a gentle curve. One UK reviewer put a bend at about a 50 mm radius, which is their figure. Flat 10 cm covers should be cut and butted.

When the tape will not hold

Add adhesive when the listing or the wall tells you to. The wide VCANIVR bullets say extra adhesive on smoothly plastered walls such as drywall. Two UK reviews on INMOZATA, and the only written UK review on JAHOMFAI, say the buyers added glue. A thin line of solvent-free grab adhesive can help a flat cover on a sound, dry wall. It will not help on blown plaster. One SDLDEER review says lifting the strip damaged laminate. A hairdryer can warm a cold strip. Quest caps heat at 80°C for their own board. Stop when the plaster is soft, the timber is rotten, or you cannot find the air bricks under a suspended timber floor.

Common questions

How warm does the room need to be?
At least 15°C if you follow Truly PVC, at least 16°C if you follow Quest, and not below 18°C if you follow Primo’s soft-moulding note. Those are three makers, not a single building regulation. Warm the roll in the room as well as the air. A hairdryer is a way to soften a cold strip, with Quest’s 80°C cap on their own product, and it is not a substitute for a dry wall.
Do I clean with sugar soap, alcohol, or just a vacuum?
Vacuum first, then remove grease. Quest’s UK page names isopropyl alcohol. Sugar soap is reasonable if you rinse and dry it. A vacuum alone leaves the film that stops the tape gripping. Wallpaper, woodchip and fresh emulsion that is still soft are poor grounds. If the paint comes away on the cloth, fix the paint before you fit the strip.
Floor leg first or wall leg first?
Floor leg first on an L-tape, with the crease kept even as you travel. That is Truly PVC’s order for their joint tape. A flat 10 cm cover has no floor leg, so you set the bottom edge and press up the wall. Starting with the wall leg on an L-profile is how the floor leg buckles and the corner refuses to meet.
How do I cut an internal corner without a mitre saw?
Cut a small 45° triangle from the floor leg so the wall face can turn the corner. Scissors or a knife on a cutting board are enough for soft PVC and vinyl. Leave the mitre saw for rigid MDF. An external corner is two separate pieces with mirrored cuts, butted on the floor leg, not one length bent around the corner.
Can I bend the strip around an external corner?
A quarter-round may follow a gentle curve. An L-tape and a 10 cm cover should be cut. Bending a square external corner stretches the face, and the stretch comes back as a wrinkle or a lifted end. If the offcut looks short, start a new piece rather than pulling the bent one tighter.
Should I peel all 6 m of film at once?
No. Peel a short length, press it, then peel the next. A full 6 m of exposed adhesive twists, picks up dust, and sticks to itself. Reviews that mention a wandering line are usually this problem plus working alone. A second pair of hands is cheaper than a second roll.
