Fill a deep hole in plasterboard

Updated: October 2026

A fine tub will not stay in a plasterboard hole you can put a finger through. To fill a deep hole in plasterboard you need the depth the paste is rated for, a bridge if the cavity is open, and a clear answer on whether you may screw back into the fill. The [indoor wall filler comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/wall-filler-indoor) lists the captured amazon.co.uk packs, including two mesh kits that are not the skim. Prep and the lid stay on [how to fill cracks in walls](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/wall-filler-indoor/sub/wall-filler-indoor-how-to-fill). Prices were written up on 16 October 2026. Three depths, not one deep filler

One thick pass is how a deep repair cracks, sags, or refuses a screw. Everyday multi-purpose paste on Polycell's page is for holes up to about 10 mm, then further layers. Palace fine, at 3 mm layers, is the wrong tub once the hole is deeper than that. Polycell Deep Gap is an indoor filler for up to 20 mm, and that page says it is drillable and takes nails and screws. Polycell Advanced is published at up to 50 mm, is not for drilling, and does not need sanding. Neither was in the twelve listings. A fill that says it is not for drilling must not take a curtain-pole fixing.

Plasterboard needs a bridge

A small hole can be filler alone. A medium hole, in the Wickes guide, needs mesh overlapping sound board, then filler over it. A large hole needs a new piece of board, because a void will not hold a skin of paste. SOL is four patches of about 10 cm, at about £5.29 and 4.4 from 507 reviews. FPNNZ is a 2 inch and 4 inch kit at about £6.99 and 4.7 from 13 reviews. Both are bridges you still paste over. Press the mesh onto sound board. Reviews include patches whose adhesive failed. A hole larger than the patch is a stop.

Grip is a different job

Plugdoh is four orange 5 g sachets for a loose wall plug, not a deep filler. The seller says it sets in about 10 minutes, and reviews soften it with hot water. The orange shows until you paint over it. A curtain pole that has pulled its plug out is that grip job. The compound does not rebuild a fist-sized hole. A screw in a deep fill needs a product whose page says the fill may be drilled. That published product is Deep Gap at 20 mm, not Advanced at 50 mm, and neither was in this scrape.

What you can buy in this set

Sika's 600 g tub states 9 mm deep and 25 mm wide, then further layers. It is the top pick in this set when the hole is about that size and you are not screwing into the fill. It is not Deep Gap. Palace's 1 kg tub takes layers no thicker than 10 mm when you do not need a screw in the paste. Sinto's seller bullet says up to 1 cm, and reviews mention fills that cracked. The Decex kit's drillable line is the seller's wording on a 396 g tube, at about 10 mm. It does not put 20 mm into the tube. If a screw must hold, buy a filler whose own page says so, and isolate the circuit near a cable.

Common questions

When is a fine filler the wrong tub?
When the hole is deeper than that paste's layer limit. Palace fine is layers of 3 mm. A finger hole, or a void the paste falls into, is past that, so use a depth-rated paste and mesh if the board is open. A hairline of 2 mm to 3 mm is a different job.
What does layer above 10 mm mean?
You do not pack the whole depth in one go past the one-pass figure. Polycell's multi-purpose page is holes up to 10 mm, then further layers. Palace 1 kg is layers no thicker than 10 mm. Let a layer firm, then add the next. A single 30 mm lump is how this repair sags.
Do I need mesh on plasterboard?
You need it when filler has nothing to sit on. A small dent can be paste alone. A medium hole, in the Wickes guide, gets mesh overlapping sound board, then filler over it. SOL at about £5.29 and FPNNZ at about £6.99 are the bridges here. A hole larger than the patch needs a new piece of board or timber, not more mesh in the void.
Which published filler is drillable, and which is not?
Deep Gap is the published drillable filler, indoors, up to 20 mm, and that page says it takes nails and screws. Advanced is published at 50 mm and is not for drilling. Neither was priced here. Do not put a curtain-pole screw into a fill that forbids drilling, and isolate the supply near a cable.
Is Plugdoh the same as a deep filler?
No. It is four orange 5 g sachets for a loose wall plug, with a seller time of about 10 minutes. Reviews soften it with hot water, and the orange shows until you paint over it. It does not skim plasterboard, replace mesh, or stand in for the 20 mm or 50 mm pages.
The Decex kit says drillable. Is that Polycell's Deep Gap?
No. The bullet is the seller's line on a kit around a 396 g tube, at about 10 mm. Deep Gap is a different product, published at 20 mm, and it was not in this set. Advanced, at 50 mm and not for drilling, is a different product again.
