White silicone sealant: decide the job before the price

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at a row of white cartridges on amazon.co.uk, and the star lines that exist sit between 4.0 and 4.7. White silicone sealant is a moisture-curing joint sealant. The colour does not tell you whether the tube is a sanitary bead, a 70 g repair, or a frame silicone with a movement figure. Sort the job, the substrate, the fungicide line and the pack before you sort by price. The [Silicone white comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/silicone-white) is the product table. Prices and stars are the 21 October 2026 snapshot. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the white bead has to do

A shower joint, a short repair, a uPVC frame and a crack you will paint are four different purchases. Silicone stays flexible, and paint does not stick to it. Toolstation's guide treats decorator's caulk as the paintable family and silicone as the family for a wet joint. Sika sanitary and UniBond are written as bath cartridges. Siroflex states 12.5 percent movement. The 151 tube is a 70 g repair with no fungicide. A cheap white tube can be the right repair and the wrong shower. Named picks sit on the best white silicone page.

Substrate before brand

Acetoxy silicone smells of vinegar because it releases acetic acid. GOV.UK's note describes vapour that can irritate, and it does not expect harm from correct household use, so you ventilate. Trade guides put acetoxy on glass and glazed ceramic. Neutral cure is for the sheet that excludes natural stone or a reactive metal. Dowsil 785 is the listing that says acetoxy. The brand field says AIGHER and the manufacturer field says Dow. Everbuild 500 lists PVCu, so there is no blanket ban on plastic. UniBond's sheet claims stone and the amazon file does not. Test acrylic in a hidden spot.

Fungicide and the class digit

Anti-mould on a title is not an EN class. BS EN 15651-3 covers interior sanitary joints. It does not cover pools, drinking water or food contact. S1 or XS1 is the higher mould band and S3 or XS3 is the weaker one. A line that only says EN 15651 has not given you the digit. Sika general purpose states anti-fungal ingredients and EN 15651 with no class digit. The title says 260 ml and the volume field says 280 ml. Sika sanitary and UniBond state a mould line and print no class. Do not copy an S1 code from a different Soudal product onto the multi-purpose packs. None of these twelve rows prints S1.

Pack and the price bands

Under £7: the 151 tube at about £3.35, Sika general purpose at about £5.00, and Siroflex at about £6.99. From about £8 to £14: Dowsil 785 at about £12.00, the Soudal three-pack at about £12.30 and UniBond at about £13.49. Above that: the Dowsil pair at about £18.99, the six-pack at about £21.28 and Enócilis at about £31.95. The format matters more than a pound or two inside a band. The 151 tube is 70 g and needs no gun. Sika sanitary prints 295 ml and 310 ml. Shopstop prints 70 g, 150 g and 140 g. A multipack is the wrong saving when you will open one cartridge or the colour field is not white.

What this set still does not tell you

Sika sanitary, Siroflex, the Soudal three-pack, Shopstop and Enócilis have no cure time. A 24-hour line belongs to the 151 tube at about £3.35, Dowsil 785, UniBond, and the Soudal six-pack, which also says 7 minutes to initial hardening. Sheets talk about a few millimetres a day. Do not copy that clock onto a blank row. Enócilis reviews describe a semi-transparent cure. Siroflex reviews include other colours in the range. The main comparison holds the scores.

Common questions

Is general-purpose white silicone good enough for a shower?
Sika general purpose at about £5.00 states anti-fungal ingredients and names showers, and it does not print an EN 15651 class digit. A bare EN 15651 line is not that digit. It can be enough for a low-risk gap if you accept the missing class. It is a weak substitute when the old bead is already black and you wanted a sanitary cartridge with a mould line you can point at.
What does EN 15651 on a listing actually tell you?
It tells you the seller mentioned the sealant standard. Without the part and the class, it does not tell you facade from sanitary, or S1 from S3. Sika general purpose names facade, cold climate and sanitary, and no digit follows. Treat a lone EN 15651 as a prompt to open the declaration.
Acetoxy or neutral if the bath is acrylic or the sink is metal?
Acetoxy is the vinegar cure, and Dowsil 785 is the listing that names it. It is the usual choice on glass and glazed ceramic. Everbuild 500 lists PVCu, so there is no blanket ban on plastic. UniBond's sheet claims stone and the amazon file does not. Test acrylic in a hidden spot.
Why do two white cartridges at similar star ratings cost £5 and £13?
Sika general purpose is about £5.00 with 4.5 from 7,959 reviews. UniBond is about £13.49 and prints 20 minutes and 24 hours. Neither prints a class digit. You are paying for the cure clock and the sanitary wording, not for a star gap.
Is a 70 g tube the same product as a cartridge, only smaller?
No. The 151 tube at about £3.35 is a 70 g squeeze pack for a tap or a short edge, with a 24-hour cure line and no fungicide. A sanitary cartridge is a gun pack of roughly 260 to 310 ml. The metal tube is hard to squeeze and can burst after the paste has started to dry. Use the tube for a small repair and a cartridge for a whole bath.
Can you paint white silicone to match a wall?
Paint does not stick to silicone. Soudal's FAQ says so. If the joint will be decorated, you want decorator's caulk, which is a poor choice for a shower. White silicone is for a joint that can stay a white flexible line.
