Underwater pond liner repair

Updated: 23 October 2026

The pond is full, the fish are in it, and the level is down. Underwater pond liner repair is whether you can stop that leak without a drain, or whether “cures underwater” still expects a clean bead rather than sealant on algae. A wet bead can slow a small reachable leak. It is not primer, seam tape and a roller. The [pond liner adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/pond-liner-adhesive) is the product table. We compared the amazon.co.uk bullets and UK repair pages on 21 October 2026, and did not lab-test a cure under water. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the listings print

The four MyPond rows say the sealant cures underwater in 24 hours. The black single is the only one with its own review sample, 4.6 from 400. The clear single and both twins share 4.5 from 211, so an underwater anecdote in that block is one story told three times. UniFix+ does not print that underwater-application line. Its bullets say to process it dry and above the water for maximum force, and that this is what then holds under water. The spec says 24 hours and the bullets say 24–48 hours. The butyl tape has no underwater line and no reviews. Oase’s page says the cured bond keeps strength under water, and that foil sections need their own adhesive or primer. MyPond’s underwater bullet and UniFix+’s dry bullet are different products.

Clean even when you stay wet

“Cures underwater” does not mean apply it onto algae. Grease and blanket weed stop the bead bonding to the liner. Pondkeeper allows a sealant to be used wet, and still says a dry liner is the repair that lasts. Their cold-glue kits do not work underwater and do not work on PVC. One UniFix+ text, marked as French rather than as a UK review, describes a plug that failed until the algae was cleaned off. In the black MS300’s own UK texts, one buyer was still leaking after a messy bead, and a liner-to-concrete seam had fallen off overnight. Hutton’s Gold Label page, which is not an ASIN here, says not to press the bead flat. That instruction is Gold Label’s, not MyPond’s.

Fish and cure

The black MyPond bullets name fish, plants and reptiles. The clear single has “fish safe” in the special-features field. UniFix+ prints no fish-safe line, and its bullets warn of an organotin that may cause allergic reactions. No British Standard cited here certifies a consumer pond sealant as fish-safe, so the claim is only as strong as the listing that prints it. Keep pets off any uncured bead. One shared text says the clear product would not cure under water on a pool. A shared review is not a unique test of the clear twin. The buying guide is where those fish lines sit next to the materials list.

When to drop the level anyway

Drop the water below the hole when the leak is a seam, when the sheet needs primer and tape, when UniFix+ is the cartridge you bought, or when a first wet bead has already failed. A join between two sheets is never a wet bead. A supported wet patch is reasonable when the hole is small, you can wipe the spot, and the product says it cures underwater. In this set that is the MyPond bullet. The black single is the top pick for that job because its reviews are its own. The clear single is the best value see-through option if a black bead would show. UniFix+ wants to be applied dry. If you cannot empty the pond even to the hole, a wet bead is a stopgap, not a primed seam.

Common questions

Can I repair the liner without emptying the pond?
You can try a small leak if the listing says the sealant cures underwater, the hole is reachable, and you can wipe the liner. The MyPond bullets say 24 hours underwater. UniFix+ says to process it dry and above the water, so it is the wrong choice for a pond you will not lower. A seam between two sheets is not a wet repair.
Does “cures underwater” mean I can apply it on algae?
No. The phrase is about where the bead cures, not about the condition of the sheet. Algae, grease and talc sit between the sealant and the liner. Pondkeeper still prefers a dry, clean repair even when a sealant can be used wet. Wipe the spot even if your hands are in the water.
Will the fish be all right while it cures?
Only the listings that say so are making that claim, and none of them show a British Standard that certifies it. The black MyPond bullets name fish, plants and reptiles. The clear single has a fish-safe field. UniFix+ does not, and it carries an organotin allergen warning. Keep animals away from the uncured bead.
Why does UniFix+ say both underwater and dry?
The marketing line says the cured bond keeps its strength under water. The amazon.co.uk bullets say to process it dry and above the water in order to get that force. Those are an in-service claim and an application instruction. Oase also limits the product to small areas. Buy it for a dry small repair.
When is a wet patch only a stopgap?
When the hole is in a seam, when the first bead was messy and the pond still drops, when the sheet needs primer and tape, or when you bought UniFix+ and cannot apply it dry. Treat a successful wet bead as something you check after the stated 24 hours, not as a finished join. If the level falls again, repair the liner dry.
