EPDM vs PVC pond liner adhesive

Updated: 23 October 2026

Both sheets can look black once they are wet, and the tube says it sticks to rubber and vinyl. EPDM vs PVC pond liner adhesive is the difference between a primed tape seam and a weld or a PVC cement. A universal cartridge can bond a small area of either material. It does not turn two different sheets into one seam, and it does not let you stick EPDM straight onto PVC. The [pond liner adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/pond-liner-adhesive) shows which listings name either material. We used UK seaming guides and those listings, and did not lab-test a join. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Rubber is a tape system

EPDM and butyl are seamed with primer and double-sided tape, then rolled. Pond Liners Co describes that route for rubber and a solvent cement for PVC, and says not to join EPDM directly to PVC. Aqua Liners Direct’s guide for Elevate or SealEco EPDM calls for QuickPrime Plus, QuickSeam tape, a roller, a dry sheet, and a minimum overlap of 100 mm. Primer is there because a new rubber sheet is coated in talc. A cartridge bead does not replace that kit. Overlap figures do not agree. Pond Liners Co’s article says at least 75 mm for rubber and 100 mm if submerged. Their seaming page says 150 mm, or 200–300 mm if submerged. Use the figure from the tape system you actually bought.

PVC is a weld or a cement

Oase’s UK assembly page treats a PVC seam as a heat weld. PVC adhesive, on that page, is for minor repairs and short straight joints, not for the long join between two rolls. Aqua Liners Direct’s PVC adhesive is a solvent cement, with acetone and MEK in the description, and it is for PVC only. You cannot point that cement at an EPDM sheet. Oase’s separate PVC repair kit, which is not one of these six listings, states +5°C to +30°C. A short, flat PVC split is the job the cement is for. A wrinkled join the length of the pond is the weld, or a new sheet.

Do not cross them

EPDM stuck straight onto PVC is the join UK seaming guides tell you to refuse. The sheets move differently, and a bead that looks stuck on day one can peel once the pond is full. If a rubber liner meets a PVC fitting, follow that fitting’s own method. UniFix+ is the cartridge people reach for because the bullets say EPDM, rubber or PVC. Oase says it bonds those liners to stone, metal or plastic in small areas, and that foil sections need that liner’s adhesive or primer. Naming both is not seaming both to each other. The bullets say to process it dry and above the water. A long overlap is still a tape seam or a weld. The buying guide is the short chooser. The how to repair a pond liner page is the leak hunt if you are patching rather than joining.

What this set can and cannot do

Only UniFix+ prints EPDM, rubber or PVC on the bullets. The spec field says PVA, which the bullets do not. The MyPond rows do not print EPDM. One shared text says the clear product will not attach to EPDM. That is one review, not a lab result. The butyl tape names EPDM and gives no width, so it does not replace QuickSeam. For two rubber sheets, buy primer, a tape of a stated width, and a roller. For two PVC sheets, buy a weld, with cement only for a short joint. Do not cross the sheets.

Common questions

Can one adhesive join both EPDM and PVC?
No adhesive in this set is a seam between EPDM and PVC. UniFix+’s bullets name both materials, and Oase still says it is for small areas and for bonding liner to stone, metal or plastic, not for joining foil sections. Pond Liners Co says not to join the two sheets directly. Use the rubber system on rubber and the PVC system on PVC.
What does a rubber seam need besides tape?
It needs primer and a roller, on a clean dry overlap. Talc on a new EPDM sheet stops tape from wetting the rubber, which is why UK guides treat primer as part of the seam. The overlap is the tape maker’s figure: 75 mm, 100 mm or 150 mm appear on different UK pages. A cartridge squeezed along the join is not that stack.
Is PVC glue the same as heat welding?
No. Oase describes heat welding as the way PVC sections are joined, and PVC adhesive as the option for minor repairs and short straight joints. Cement can close a short, flat repair if it is made for PVC. It does not replace a weld on a long seam, and it does not belong on EPDM. The band of +5°C to +30°C is on Oase’s PVC repair kit, not on UniFix+.
Can I stick EPDM straight onto PVC?
UK joining guidance says not to. The adhesives and the movement of the sheets are different, so a join that looks closed can open once it is under water. If a fitting is PVC and the liner is EPDM, use the method that fitting was sold with. Do not bridge the gap with a universal pond cartridge.
Is UniFix+ the seam product?
It is the small-area product in this set that names EPDM, rubber or PVC. Oase does not sell it as the adhesive for foil sections. The bullets say to apply it dry and above the water, with about 7 m from a 290 ml cartridge at £27.83. The spec field says PVA, which conflicts with the bullets. For two sheets, buy the primer and tape, or the PVC weld, that the sheet requires.
