Polyester resin vs vinylester

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to resin a gate hinge into sound brick, and someone on site has said you should have bought vinylester. This is a chemistry choice, not a star rating. Polyester in this amazon.co.uk set is a medium-duty resin for sound, generally dry masonry and non-cracked concrete. Vinylester is the step up for cracked concrete, a wet or underwater hole, or a higher duty. Vinylester and epoxy are not in these seven listings. The tubes themselves are on the [polyester resin comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/polyester-resin). We used UK trade guides and manufacturer wording, not a lab load test. What each chemistry is for

Polyester is for a light to medium fixing in a base that is not cracked. CMT’s resin index puts polyester on ETA Option 7, non-cracked concrete and masonry, and Ceresit describes CF850 the same way. A dry gate hinge in sound brick sits there if the sheet names that substrate. Vinylester is not a dearer version of the same tube. Ceresit describes CF920 for medium to high loads, cracked concrete, and wet or underwater anchors, and CMT adds ETA Option 1 where the specification asks for cracked concrete.

Where ordinary polyester stops

Ordinary polyester can shrink or fail to set in damp conditions, which is why a wet hole is the usual reason to change chemistry. A drill you can dry is not a hole full of water. Flooded holes, cracked concrete, overhead fixings and specified structural steel are the stop line. A fire-rated bullet, including on a TIMCO listing, does not override that brand’s non-safety-critical line. This set contains neither vinylester nor epoxy.

The hybrid exception is not every tube

Fischer sells FIS P Plus as a polyester hybrid. The Construction Index account says it is ETA-approved for external use and for water-filled holes, where ordinary polyester can struggle. The published approvals cited for the family are ETA-11/0419 and ETA-18/0383. Stay with that hybrid only for a condition the ETA actually names. A fire-escape line is not approval to resin a fire escape, and the exception does not spread to TIMCO, Metalmate or Rawlplug. If the ETA does not mention water-filled holes, believe the absence. Gun and fill come after the chemistry, in the polyester resin buying guide.

Stay or step up

Stay when the base is sound brick or non-cracked concrete, the hole is dry unless that product’s own approval says otherwise, and the job is not a life-safety design. Leave the set for cracked concrete, a flooded hole with standard polyester, an overhead fixing, or specified structural steel. Buy a vinylester whose approval names those conditions, or ask a competent person. Styrene-free only changes odour. At a cracked slab or standing water, put the tube back unless it is the fischer hybrid and that approval is in front of you.

Common questions

Is polyester enough for a gate hinge in sound brick?
Yes, when the brick is sound, the hole is dry, and the hinge is not a life-safety design. UK guides give polyester that medium-duty job: a gate, a light bracket, a handrail a competent person has not classed as structural. Clean the hole and use a resin whose sheet names masonry. A cracked concrete post, or a hinge on a fall-protection line, is a different job.
What changes if the hole is wet or the concrete is cracked?
A flooded hole and cracked concrete are the usual reasons to leave standard polyester. Trade tables put vinylester on cracked concrete and on wet or underwater anchors, under an Option 1 approval where the specification asks for it. A damp smear you can dry is not standing water. Fischer’s FIS P Plus is the water-filled exception only when you are reading that ETA, not as a property of TIMCO or Metalmate.
Is vinylester just a more expensive polyester?
No. The extra money is for a different approval band: cracked concrete, higher duty, and wet or underwater use. Ceresit’s CF920 is medium to high loads on cracked bases. CF850 polyester is light to medium on non-cracked bases. A larger tube of polyester does not become that. If the job needs the extra approval, the cheaper polyester is the expensive mistake.
Does styrene-free polyester become a vinylester?
No. Styrene-free is an odour claim on certain polyester cartridges. It does not add cracked-concrete approval, and it does not make a wet hole acceptable. Rawlplug’s styrene-free tube is still sold for non-cracked concrete and masonry. A milder smell in a porch does not change the chemistry class on the label.
Where does pure epoxy sit if both of these feel short?
Epoxy is the further step for heavy work an engineer has specified, and it is not in this set. Use it when the design names an epoxy anchor. For a dry gate hinge in sound brick it is a longer cure without a job that needs it. For a specified structural connection, neither polyester nor a general vinylester slogan replaces the product on the drawing.
Can I use the fischer hybrid outdoors because a bullet says indoors and outdoors?
Only to the extent the ETA for FIS P Plus names that use. The hybrid is described as approved for external use and water-filled holes, under ETA-11/0419 and ETA-18/0383. Indoors and outdoors, or a fire-escape line, is an application claim, not a building-regulations sign-off. TIMCO and the other standard tubes do not inherit it.
Who should stop and get a design rather than a cartridge?
Stop if the fixing is overhead, if someone could fall if it fails, if the concrete is cracked, or if the steel is a specified structural member. BS 8539’s point for buyers is that the resin and the installation both have to match the job. A weekend gate in sound brick does not need that appointment. A balcony edge, a cracked ring-beam or a handrail guarding a drop does.
