Styrene-free polyester resin

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are setting a stud in a porch or a utility room, the door is shut, and the last polyester you used smelled like a boat workshop. Styrene-free polyester resin is the enclosed-room option in this split: a lower-odour cartridge, not a stronger one, and not a pass for every tube with polyester on the label. In these seven amazon.co.uk listings only two print the claim. Prices and stars sit on the [polyester resin comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/polyester-resin). We used those listings, the manufacturers’ pages and the Health and Safety Executive. We did not measure airborne styrene. What the claim changes

The claim changes smell and ventilation, not the load. The Health and Safety Executive sets a workplace exposure limit for styrene of 100 ppm over eight hours and 250 ppm over 15 minutes. UKHSA prints the same limits as 430 mg/m³ and 1,080 mg/m³. Those are employer controls under COSHH, not a home certificate and not a strength grade. A small occupied room is still the wrong default for the styrene grade.

Listings that print styrene-free

Two listings print styrene-free. Rawlplug R-KEM II 300 ml, B00LYEAGBY, is about £12.10 with 4.5 stars from 134 reviews, sold as low-odour for indoor use, still for non-cracked concrete and masonry. The masonry pair is ETA-12/0528 and UKTA-22/6108, separate from the concrete sheet. Metalmate’s 410 ml, B0D9YJHMDN, is about £14.13 with 4.0 from five reviews: no styrene, indoors, medium non-critical loads. One review says the mixer straw was missing. That size often needs a specialist resin gun, which the polyester resin buying guide checks before you order.

Listings that do not

Both TIMCO PE tubes are the ventilated grade, about £10.30 for 300 ml and about £10.40 for 410 ml. The PE310 and PE410 pages say well ventilated and non-safety-critical, and the safety data sheet is the styrene-containing grade. TIMCO’s PESF styrene-free resin is a different product and not in this set. Both fischer listings are polyester hybrid and do not print styrene-free. Screwfix has used those words on a FIS P Plus 300 ml. Do not copy that badge onto B01N2QZA2N or the 380 C. The Harbro paste has no styrene classification on the listing.

What to buy for an occupied room

For an occupied or poorly ventilated room, buy a cartridge that prints styrene-free and still matches the gun and the wall. That is Rawlplug 300 ml if the nozzles are in the bag and you already own the stud, or Metalmate 410 ml if you have the resin gun and you accept five reviews. Rawlplug’s deeper file is not automatically the top pick: the fixing-kit title has over-promised rods and spare nozzles. If you can ventilate, TIMCO PE 300 ml stays the cheaper standard polyester. Do not use it as the closed-kitchen compromise. A lower smell does not fix cracked concrete or a flooded hole.

Common questions

Which of these listings actually say styrene-free?
Rawlplug R-KEM II 300 ml, about £12.10, and Metalmate 410 ml, about £14.13. Rawlplug is 4.5 stars from 134 reviews. Metalmate is 4.0 from five, with a missing-straw complaint. TIMCO’s PE pair, both fischer hybrids, and the Harbro paste do not carry the claim. If a title only says polyester, assume the styrene grade until the listing says otherwise.
Is styrene-free stronger?
No. It is a lower-odour option for an enclosed room. Rawlplug still sells the cartridge for non-cracked concrete and masonry, and Metalmate’s bullets still say medium, non-critical loads. You do not gain a cracked-concrete approval or a higher design load by avoiding styrene. Match the ETA to the wall, then worry about the smell.
Can I use standard TIMCO PE in a small closed room?
TIMCO’s PE310 and PE410 pages say the resin wants a well ventilated space, and the safety data sheet is the styrene-containing grade. A small closed room is the case those lines refuse. TIMCO’s styrene-free alternative is the PESF, a different product and not in this set. If you cannot air the room, choose a listing that prints styrene-free. The £10.30 price does not cancel the ventilation sentence.
Do the fischer tubes count as styrene-free?
Not on these listings. Both are polyester hybrid, and neither claims styrene-free. A Screwfix label on a FIS P Plus 300 ml has used those words. The fischer page behind B01N2QZA2N and the 380 C does not. External use and water-filled holes under the hybrid’s ETA are not a low-odour claim. These listings do not print both.
What is the UK workplace limit, and does it apply to one stud at home?
The Great Britain workplace exposure limit is 100 ppm over eight hours and 250 ppm over 15 minutes, also written as 430 mg/m³ and 1,080 mg/m³. The Health and Safety Executive sets that for employers. It is not a home certificate that one cartridge is fine, and it is not a hull-laminating dose for a domestic stud. Ventilate standard polyester. Prefer a styrene-free cartridge when the room stays occupied.
Does styrene-free remove the need for gloves and eye protection?
No. Rawlplug retailer hazard lines still name skin and eye irritation, and the cure still uses an organic peroxide hardener, including dibenzoyl peroxide. That hardener stays off rags, off the threads you need to turn, and away from heat. Styrene-free reduces the volatile styrene. A mild smell can still irritate eyes in a small room.
Is the stone paste covered by this claim?
The Harbro vertical paste has no styrene classification on the listing, so this page does not call it styrene-free. It is knife-grade polyester for marble, granite, onyx and travertine, mixed with a separate hardener, at about £18.95. For an indoor stone repair, read that product’s own safety sheet. For a stud, the paste is the wrong product regardless of smell.
