How to use hot glue sticks

Updated: 23 October 2026

How to use hot glue sticks comes down to a hot nozzle, a short open time, and cooling a burn under the tap without peeling. We used Bostik’s UK first-use notes, NHS burns advice, and feed notes on twelve amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The sticks are on the [hot glue sticks comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/hot-glue-sticks). If the stick will not enter the gun, read [7 mm versus 11 mm glue sticks](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/hot-glue-sticks/sub/hot-glue-sticks-7mm-vs-11mm). Scorched fabric is on [hot glue sticks for fabric](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/hot-glue-sticks/sub/hot-glue-sticks-for-fabric).

Set the gun up before you load a stick

Wipe dust, polish and damp off both faces. Stand the gun so the nozzle points away from you, on a UK three-pin plug and a 230 V supply. Electrical Safety First says unplug when you finish and keep children supervised. A child-safe line on a stick does not make a hot nozzle safe to leave. Bostik’s first-use page asks for about five minutes before a clean flow. A cold nozzle makes a normal stick stringy. SHALL reviewers say that pack smells and smokes. All-day or overhead work belongs to a workplace assessment.

Load and join while the bead is still open

Load from the back. Do not push a second stick until the first has moved, and do not pull a half-used stick out of the rear. Do not force the trigger. A 7 mm mini needs a 7 mm stick. An 11 mm stick will not enter, and a 7 mm stick in an 11 mm gun can let melt push backwards. Press within about 15 seconds, which is Bostik’s first-use note. Pack claims of 15 or 30 seconds are handling times. A 200 mm stick gives a longer run, not a longer open time. Bostik’s own sticks do not bond polythene or polypropylene.

Handling strength is not full strength

Bostik’s hardening FAQ puts drying at about 15–60 seconds, handling strength at about a minute, and full strength at about 1–2 hours at 20°C. ANSIO says less than 30 seconds, JelKen and Amazon Basics say 30 seconds, and WORKPRO says about 15 seconds. Those are packet claims. Give a bracket, a pulled hem or a carpet edge the longer wait. One SHALL note of carpet tape still holding after months is a use report, not a cure clock. In a cold room, warm the gun fully before you press.

If the stick will not feed or the bead strings

Stop if the trigger moves and the stick does not. G4GADGET reviewers called the sticks soft and bendy, and a Worx trigger would not advance them. Forcing a soft stick packs melt towards your hand. Amazon Basics has the same trigger note, plus stringing and a smell. Unplug, cool the gun, and try a firmer stick of the same diameter. Stringing is usually a cool nozzle or a tip lifted while the glue is tacky. Keep the tip close and twist off. If the diameter is wrong, change the pack.

If molten glue hits skin

Cool the burn under cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes. That is the NHS timing. Do not use ice or greasy creams, and do not peel the glue. Bostik’s sheet says at least 10 minutes; follow the NHS 20. Keep fingers moving gently. Call 999 for a large burn, the face, hands, feet or genitals, or glue in an eye. Use NHS 111 when you are unsure and the burn is smaller.

Common questions

How long should the gun warm up?
Bostik’s first-use page says about five minutes before you expect glue to flow freely. A bead that strings or a trigger that will not advance a normal stick is often a gun that is still cold. Wait for a steady flow, then join. Do not force the trigger to hurry a cold melt.
How fast must I press the joint?
Press while the bead is still open. Bostik’s first-use note says within about 15 seconds for that glue. Pack claims of 15 or 30 seconds on WORKPRO, ANSIO or JelKen are handling lines for those listings, not a longer working time. If the bead has skinned, stop and lay a fresh one rather than reheating the skin with the nozzle.
When is the bond fully strong?
Handling strength arrives in about a minute on Bostik’s FAQ, after a surface dry of roughly 15–60 seconds. Full strength on that sheet is about 1–2 hours at 20°C. You can move a light craft piece sooner. Do not load a joint, hang a weight from it, or flex a hem hard until that longer wait has passed.
What if the trigger will not push the stick?
Unplug and let the gun cool. A soft stick, which G4GADGET and Amazon Basics reviewers both describe, will not improve if you force it. Check that the diameter matches the gun. If the stick is right and still will not feed after a full warm-up, retire that stick instead of pushing melt out of the back.
Can I pull a half-used stick out of the back?
No. Bostik’s first-use advice is not to pull a stick out of the rear. You can break the melt inside the gun and leave a plug that the next stick cannot move. Feed forward with a fresh stick of the same diameter, or let the gun cool and follow the gun maker’s clearing steps.
What do I do if glue hits my skin?
Run cool or lukewarm water over the burn for 20 minutes, as the NHS advises. Do not use ice and do not peel the glue. Keep fingers gently moving. Use 999 for a large burn, a facial burn, or glue in the eye, and 111 if you are unsure. Do not start with oil or butter.
