How to use a hot glue gun

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have an 11 mm gun on the bench and a nozzle that will burn skin. This is how to use a hot glue gun so the first pull happens after the heater is ready, the bead is pressed while it is still soft, and a burn is cooled the way the NHS describes. The steps follow the heat-up claims on the [hot glue gun 11mm comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/hot-glue-gun-11mm), plus Bostik UK, Glue Guns Direct, Dremel GB, Electrical Safety First and the NHS burns page. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. What to buy is on the [buying guide](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/hot-glue-gun-11mm/sub/hot-glue-gun-11mm-buying-guide). Here the gun is already chosen.

Set the gun up

Clear a non-flammable patch of bench and fit the stand before you plug in. Glue Guns Direct says to insert a stick before plugging in, and never to lay the gun on its side. Bostik’s order is the same: stand, stick, then wait. Houshan’s row does not state a stand. Use the stick length that gun was sold with: 11 × 200 mm on both WORKPRO guns, about 150 mm on SEEKONE, FAHEFANA and BEEWAY, and 11 × 270 mm on Houshan. A UK review on the corded WORKPRO said 100 mm sticks are too short for the feed. Push the stick in from the back. Do not warm the gun empty. Children use a glue gun only with an adult watching. Diameter is on the 11 mm or 7 mm page. None of the six listings states a BS 1363 plug. If the pins are wrong, stop. The cordless WORKPRO is 12 V, and its listing says not to use it while charging.

How long to heat

A warm body is not a ready chamber. Wait for the heat-up claim on your own gun. FAHEFANA says 60–90 seconds, the corded WORKPRO 90 seconds, Houshan 2–3 minutes, the cordless WORKPRO 180 seconds, and BEEWAY and SEEKONE 3–5 minutes. If your listing says 90 seconds, you are not required to wait the five minutes some general guides suggest. Lay a short test bead on scrap. It should flow without forcing the trigger. Press the parts and hold them still. Hot glue sets as it cools. Do not pull a half-used stick out of the back. Bostik, Glue Guns Direct and Dremel all say to feed a new stick behind the old one.

Drips, strings and parking

Some ooze on the stand is normal once the chamber is hot. A constant stream, or glue behind the nozzle, is a reason to stop. FAHEFANA’s UK reviews report constant drips and a leak behind the orange nozzle. Wipe strings with a scrap of card. Do not wipe the nozzle with a finger. Park the gun on its stand between beads. The cordless WORKPRO claims auto-off after 10 idle minutes. Unplug a mains gun when you leave the room, and let the nozzle cool before a case goes on. Charge the cordless pack on a stable surface, not overnight, and not while you glue.

If glue hits your skin

Cool the burn under cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes. The NHS page on burns and scalds says to start as soon as you have stopped contact with the heat. Do not use ice, iced water, creams, butter or toothpaste. Do not peel glue that is stuck to the skin. Follow the NHS page, not an ice-cold water tip. After cooling, the NHS says to cover the area loosely with cling film. Call 999 or go to A&E for a large or deep burn, a burn on the face, genitals or bottom, or an electrical burn. Use NHS 111 if you are unsure, including when the person burned is a child under 5. Do not open the housing if you smell burning, see sparks or feel a hot plug.

Common questions

How long do I wait before the first pull?
Wait for the claim on your listing, then test on scrap. In this comparison that runs from 60–90 seconds on FAHEFANA to 3–5 minutes on BEEWAY and SEEKONE. A warm handle is not a melted chamber. If the first bead is a cold slug, wait. Do not force the trigger.
Why does it drip on the stand?
A hot chamber pushes a little glue out of the nozzle while you pause. That is why the stand and a piece of card exist. Constant drips or a leak behind the nozzle are a reason to stop. Unplug if you are leaving it, and do not store it in a case until it is cool.
Can I pull a half-used stick out?
Leave it in the feed once it has been hot. Bostik, Glue Guns Direct and Dremel all say not to withdraw a stick from the back after it has started to melt. Feed the next stick in behind it. If the gun is cold and the stick was never heated, you can remove an unused stick.
What do I do if glue hits my skin?
Cool running water for 20 minutes. The NHS says no ice, no creams, and no peeling of glue that is stuck. Cover loosely with cling film afterwards. Electrical Safety First’s ice-cold water line conflicts with that page, so follow the NHS. A small burn you are unsure about, and any burn on a child under 5, goes to NHS 111. A large, deep, facial, genital or electrical burn is 999 or A&E.
When is this a 999 or 111 problem?
Call 999 or go to A&E for a large or deep burn, a burn on the face, genitals or bottom, or any electrical burn, including sparks or a hot plug. Use NHS 111 if you are unsure how serious it is, and for a child under 5. A burning smell, a swollen battery, or a job that must hold weight or seal water is also the point to stop. Do not open the housing to look for the fault.
