Is epoxy resin food safe in the UK?

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have read food grade or non-toxic on a clear kit and you want a coaster, a board, or something you might sell. Is epoxy resin food safe in the UK is three questions: the liquid in the bottle, the cured piece on your table, and goods a food business places on the market. A seller bullet is not a declaration this site has seen. The [epoxy resin comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/epoxy-resin) lists what each listing writes. This page does not rank a safest kit. Peter F. wrote it from the listings and from UK food-contact and skin guidance. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The table badges are comparison labels, not a food-safety result.

Three different questions

The liquid is resin and hardener before they cure. Non-toxic on a craft listing does not turn that stage into water. Health and Safety Executive guidance treats epoxy resins and hardeners as a leading cause of occupational dermatitis, and a 2024 HSE notice called epoxy resin a known skin sensitiser. Gloves are not a reason to skip the label. The cured piece is a coaster or board at home. A food-grade bullet is the seller talking about that surface. No file here contains a declaration of compliance or a migration number. Selling articles for food to touch is a different act. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own food-contact rules. The citations are the England instrument.

What these listings actually say

Two brands use food-grade words. Craft Resin, on the 1 litre and 2 litre listings, says food grade, non-toxic, and VOC-free when used as directed. A review says it smells and is not VOC-free, and the file has no certificate. Do not merge the 95°C line into safe for hot food. DR. RESIN says food grade once fully cured. A review still asks whether it is food safe. The other kits do not say food safe. IModeur, Funxim, Suzzam, Fidton, ISTOYO, and SigWong use a non-toxic bullet. A JDiction review that says food safe is a reviewer, not the listing. LET'S RESIN does not say food safe. For a craft that will not touch food, use the epoxy resin buying guide.

What UK food-contact rules cover

Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, Article 3, says food-contact materials must not transfer constituents in quantities that endanger health, change the food, or spoil taste or smell, and labelling must not mislead. This site has no migration figure for these ASINs. BADGE is a named substance in some can coatings. Regulation 1895/2005, Annex I, limits BADGE and named derivatives to 9 mg/kg, or 9 mg/6 dm² where the annex says so. BFDGE is prohibited, and the England rules also cover NOGE. Part 7 of the 2012 England regulations is an offence for a food business that breaks those limits. None of these amazon files supplies a declaration. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, sections 9 and 11, is the separate point that goods should match the description.

Uncured resin is not non-toxic to your skin

A bottle on the Great Britain market has to be labelled under GB CLP. Northern Ireland follows EU CLP. The files do not print H-statements, so read the label that arrived. If the room smells, ventilate, and treat a VOC-free bullet as disputed. HSE puts other controls before gloves. Do not wash liquid resin down the sink. This site will not say any kit is certified food safe, that 24 hours makes a surface ready for food, or that 95°C means hot food is fine. IModeur puts full hardness at 72 hours, and hardness is not a migration test. It will not say BADGE is banned, or that a stall or café table complies with Part 7.

Common questions

Which listings in this set actually say food safe?
Craft Resin, on the 1 litre and 2 litre listings, says food grade, non-toxic, and VOC-free when used as directed. DR. RESIN says food grade once fully cured. A review disputes the VOC-free line. No file includes a certificate or a migration number. The other ten listings do not make a food-grade claim in the bullets we used.
Is the resin safe while I mix it?
The liquid is the hazardous stage for skin. HSE guidance calls epoxy resins and hardeners a leading cause of occupational dermatitis and a known skin sensitiser. Ventilate, keep it off your skin, and read the CLP label. Gloves in the parcel do not replace that label.
Can I sell serving boards?
Selling articles for food to touch, as a food business, is what Part 7 of the England regulations is written for. You must not place articles on the market that use BFDGE or NOGE or that break the BADGE limits. None of these twelve listings supplies a declaration. This page cannot tell you that you comply.
What is BADGE in plain language?
BADGE is a specific epoxy-related substance limited in food-contact law, not a ban on all epoxy. The migration sum in Regulation 1895/2005 is 9 mg/kg, or 9 mg/6 dm² where the annex says so. BFDGE is the substance that regulation prohibits. Do not assume a craft resin contains BADGE without a declaration.
Does 24 hours make the surface ready for food?
No. Several bullets use 24 hours as a cure line. IModeur separates that from full hardness at 72 hours, longer in winter. Hardness is not a food-contact certificate, and Craft Resin’s food-grade line is not the same sentence as its 95°C heat line.
