Cordless vs corded hot glue gun

Updated: 23 October 2026

Wireless on a UK product page can mean a USB cell that stays hot while you move, a mains gun that heats on 230 V and then runs briefly unplugged, or a corded bench tool that never leaves the wall. Those are three purchases. This guide asks whether cutting the lead solves the job. The [cordless hot glue gun comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/cordless-hot-glue-gun) ranks battery and USB listings only. Prices are the amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 19 October 2026. Cordless, cord-free and corded are three purchases

Cordless here means the tool draws heat from a built-in USB cell, from swap packs, or from a platform pack such as a listed DeWalt 20 V battery while you work. Tilswall, Athnevy, AOZOY, EZARC and the Bosch GluePen are USB examples. Yofidra brings two packs in the kit. SEEKONE needs a pack you already own. There is no trailing lead during the bead. Cord-free, in trade jargon summarised by Tooled Up, is different: the gun heats on a 230 V lead, then you unplug and work on residual heat, often spoken of as roughly 10–15 minutes as a rule of thumb, not a lab figure for any listing here. A photo can make both look wireless. Corded means the lead stays in a UK socket for the whole job. Runtime is the stick and your patience, not a cell, and flow can stay high because wall power does not sag. If a title says wireless without naming a battery, read the power source line.

When cutting the lead actually helps

The lead is the problem when you pass a gun around a table, work on a wreath on the floor, glue inside a cupboard, or move rooms without an extension. USB minis here are light tools for about 7 mm sticks, often with sticks and a cable, from about £14 complete. A DeWalt owner can clip SEEKONE on for 11 mm sticks and a 170–190°C claim. Yofidra covers that stick class with packs in the price, at about £34.99, if you are not on that platform. You still need a UK plug for charging. Cordless removes the lead from your hands during the bead. It does not remove BS 1363 from the charger. Electrical Safety First’s advice on stands, supervision and chargers still applies.

When a corded gun is the better buy

Stay corded for long beads, large assemblies, or sessions a USB mini would interrupt. Reviews sometimes report around twenty minutes even when bullets claim more. If you never leave the socket, you pay for a cell you will not use. Corded guns also suit uninterrupted heat without a fuel gauge. This page does not re-rank corded listings. For continuous bench work, use the hot glue gun comparison. Polyethylene, polypropylene, silicone and flexing outdoor joints are poor matches for hot melt unless the stick maker says otherwise. Power source does not fix chemistry. Charge, park and burn steps are on how to use a cordless hot glue gun.

Inside cordless: USB mini, own packs, platform body

USB minis are complete small kits for about 7 mm sticks. They win on price and pass-around use, and lose on continuous flow. Tilswall’s 5 V / 2 A, maximum 10 W note is for that model. Yofidra trades weight and about £34.99 for swappable cells and 11 mm sticks, with a 100°C claim. Do not rewrite 100 W into 170°C. SEEKONE looks cheap at about £18.99 until you add the pack. It suits a listed DeWalt 20 V battery you already own. Buy cordless when the lead gets in the way of short or medium beads and you accept cell limits. Buy corded when the socket is beside the bench and the bead must not stop. Do not buy cord-free thinking it is cordless.

Common questions

What is the difference between cordless and corded hot glue guns?
Cordless runs from a battery or USB cell while you work, so there is no trailing lead on the tool. Corded stays plugged into a UK socket for the whole job and does not depend on a cell for heat. Corded usually wins on uninterrupted runtime. Cordless wins on mobility.
What does cord-free mean if it is not cordless?
Cord-free usually means the gun heats on mains, then you unplug and work on residual heat for a limited time. That is not the same as a battery that keeps heating the chamber while you glue. Cord-free models are outside this category’s cordless comparison table. A rough 10–15 minute window is a rule of thumb, not a lab figure for these listings.
When is a USB mini enough?
When you pass the gun around a table, glue cards or decorations, or do short household fixes and a lead would snag. Complete USB kits in this set from about £14 are built for that pattern, with about 7 mm sticks in most clear listings.
When should I stay on a mains corded gun?
When you need long beads or long sessions at a fixed bench. If the socket is already beside the work, paying for a cell rarely improves the glue line.
Is a DeWalt-body gun the same as a USB craft gun?
No. SEEKONE is a platform body without a battery, aimed at listed 20 V packs and 11 mm sticks. USB craft guns include their cell and usually take about 7 mm sticks. Both are cordless in use. They are different baskets at checkout.
Will cordless match corded flow for a long bead?
Often not. Small USB cells and modest watt claims struggle to match a corded gun that draws wall power for as long as you hold the trigger. Plan cordless for interrupted, mobile work rather than marathon beads.
Do I still need a UK plug if the tool is cordless?
Yes, for charging, and for any corded or cord-free rival you compare it with. USB-C leads still need a proper adapter on a BS 1363 socket. The cordless benefit is during the bead, not during charge.
Should I buy this category if I only glue at a fixed bench?
Probably not, unless you strongly dislike a lead for another reason. A corded gun is usually the simpler bench buy. Use this cordless shelf when mobility is the actual problem.
