Silicone gun for bathroom beads that do not trail

Updated: 2026-10-23

You are sealing a bath, a basin or a shower screen, and the last bead left a trail down the acrylic because the gun kept pushing after you stopped. A silicone gun for bathroom work is a 310 ml sanitary cartridge in a frame that unloads the piston, then a tool across the bead. The gun does not make the sealant mould-resistant, and a stain on the ceiling below is a leak. Listings and prices are on the [caulking gun comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/caulking-gun). Updated 21 October 2026 from these amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources, not a lab. The gun does not choose the silicone

The cartridge is the product that meets the water. The gun only pushes it. BS EN ISO 11600 classifies sealants by end use, movement and modulus. That class sits on the cartridge label. It is not a certificate that a frame is a bathroom gun. Sanitary silicone is the usual choice for a bath, a basin or a shower screen because the manufacturer rates that paste for sanitary joints and often adds a fungicide. Decorator's caulk is a different chemical, even in the same cradle. Buy the sanitary cartridge first, in about 310 ml. A 380–400 ml trade tube is the wrong default for one bath. Ventilate and wear the gloves the safety data sheet names. This page will not give you a shower-safe hour.

A gun that stops on a wet edge

Silicone on acrylic shows every extra millilitre. The MG 100, at about £8.45 with 4.6 from 8,948 ratings, states a drip-stop and 130 kg of push for 310 ml. That is the best value frame for a straight bath edge if you do not need a rotating sleeve. The MG 200, at about £14.39 with 4.6 from 20,233 ratings, states the same drip-stop and the same 310 ml limit, and adds a rotating grip sleeve. The 130 kg figure is not printed on the MG 200 listing. A skeleton can still seal a bath if you press the release the moment you stop. The ratchet keeps extruding if you only let go of the trigger. The Everbuild Power Pro at about £15.60 is the heavier steel gun for a cartridge that has already bent a light frame. For one ordinary bathroom bead the MG 200 is the top pick when the corners and the stop both matter.

The run around a bath

Cut the failed bead out before you load anything. A new layer over old silicone bridges the gap and lets go. A blade slip scores an acrylic bath. Dry the joint. Mask both edges if you will look at the line every day, and leave the tape until you have tooled. Corners are where bathroom beads fail, because each stop is a chance for the piston to keep pushing. The MG 200's rotating sleeve keeps the nozzle in the joint while the handle angle changes. You still unload, and you still strike the corner with a tool. Tool as soon as the pressure is off, before a skin forms. Keep the shower off for whatever period the cartridge sheet prints.

Kits, and when to stop sealing

Grapelet at about £8.99 (4.2 from 60 ratings) and Sentoo at about £18.99 (4.2 from 95) sell scrapers and smoothing tools with a gun. Several reviews report a warped frame or a gun that died on first use. A kit is not the bathroom pick here. The profilers can be worth having. If a kit gun has already bent, replace it with an MG 100 or an MG 200 and keep the smoother. Call someone when water is already coming through the ceiling or the room below. Stop when the joint is specified, or when the safety data sheet asks for ventilation you cannot give a small bathroom with the door shut. For one bath, use a 310 ml sanitary cartridge in a gun that unloads the piston.

Common questions

Is the cartridge 310 ml or a bigger trade tube?
About 310 ml is the usual sanitary tube for a bath, basin or shower screen. The MG 100 and MG 200 are built for that size, and the MG 100 listing states 130 kg of push. Reviewers have found longer decorator's tubes that will not fit the MG 200. Buy the size you will open this weekend. Move to a bigger cradle only after you know the sanitary product exists in that larger pack.
Which stop matters when silicone runs down acrylic?
The stop that takes pressure off the piston at the end of the run. A drip-stop on the MG 100 or MG 200 does that when you release the trigger. On a skeleton your thumb has to be on the release tab, or the ratchet keeps feeding silicone down the bath. Tool the bead after the flow has stopped. If the stop has worn, as one MG 200 reviewer found, draw the rod back by hand.
Does the gun make the sealant mould-resistant?
Mould resistance, where a maker claims it, is a fungicide on the cartridge. ISO 11600 classifies movement and end use of the sealant. The gun adds neither. A drip-stop can hold the bead in place so that sanitary silicone has a fair joint to cure in. It cannot turn decorator's caulk into a sanitary product, and it cannot promise a mould-free shower for a span of years.
When is a leak no longer a gun job?
When water is already staining the ceiling or the room below, the path is behind the panel, the tray or the waste. A bead on the visible joint will not reach it. Specified glazing, fire or structural joints belong with whoever owns that specification. A safety data sheet that asks for more than an open window and gloves is the same handoff.
Is a finishing-tool kit worth it for one shower?
The smoother can be worth buying. The bundled gun often is not. Sentoo at about £18.99 and Grapelet at about £8.99 draw warp and bent-frame comments beside praise for the profilers. Buy an MG 100 or MG 200, and add a profiler on its own if you want one.
