How to apply lawn fertiliser without scorching grass

Updated: October 2026

You have mown the lawn, bought the feed and now need the granules down without dark stripes or bald patches. How to apply lawn fertiliser is mainly measuring the area, weighing the correct dose and avoiding concentrated piles. This page is the sequence. Product choice, including the top pick and the best value, sits in our [Wolf Garden lawn fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/wolf-garden-lawn-fertiliser). Follow the label on your own UK pack where its rate, watering or access rules differ. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Prepare the lawn and calculate the dose

Read the pack before you open it. Frozen ground, drought, strong wind or heavy rain due soon can make the job unreliable. Mow three or four days beforehand and apply to moist soil, not saturated and not bone dry. Measure each rectangle in metres and multiply length by width. An 8 m by 5 m lawn is 40 m². If, and only if, the pack states 35 g/m², 40 × 35 is 1,400 g. The Miracle-Gro Complete 4 in 1 label uses that maximum. It is not the rate for WOLF-Garten or every other product. Weigh the total. If you are still choosing, use the buying guide.

Calibrate the spreader and work in two directions

Fill the spreader on paving or over a tray, not on the grass. Put in a known weight, walk a test area at your normal pace, sweep it up and change the setting if the amount is wrong. A setting for another fertiliser can be wrong, because granule flow differs. Split the weighed dose in two. Apply one half in parallel strips and the other at right angles. Keep a steady speed, overlap only as the label says, and close the outlet before you stop or turn. On that 40 m² lawn, go along the 8 m length, then across the 5 m width. Stop if a wheel jams or granules pour out. Combined treatments add restrictions in the weed and moss guide.

Water in the feed and manage the first cuts

The RHS says to water fertiliser in if rain does not arrive within a day or so. Some combined treatments need a dry period first, so read the pack. Water gently, and keep granules out of drains, ponds and beds. Keep children and animals off for the time the pack states. There is no single wait for every feed. The best-value autumn listing uses water-in and dry. The top pick's listing does not answer the pet question, so use the pack. Store the closed bag away from pets. Rake blackened moss only after an iron treatment, when the label says. Black grass after an ordinary feed may be scorch. Season is on the autumn lawn feed guide.

Deal with an overdose or scorched patch

If granules spill, collect them before you water. Do not brush a pile further across the lawn or add extra product elsewhere. If the feed has dissolved, water the patch so the salts move down, and keep run-off out of drains. Do not apply a second treatment to force recovery. Brown stripes along spreader runs, or a dead spot where you filled the hopper, point to overdose. Where the grass is dead, rake the loose material and reseed later. If a large area is affected, product reached a pond, or you cannot tell what was applied, ask a contractor or a qualified horticulturist. If a pet has eaten granules, call your vet and keep the packaging. Animal PoisonLine is 01202 509000.

Common questions

How do I spread lawn feed evenly by hand?
Confirm that the label allows hand application and wear the specified protection. Weigh the dose, divide it in half, then apply one half in parallel lines and the other at right angles. Keep handfuls small and your pace steady. A calibrated spreader is more repeatable.
Do I need to water in lawn feed?
Often, but the pack decides when. The RHS advises watering if rain does not arrive within a day or so, while some combined treatments require a dry interval. Water evenly without run-off, and follow your UK product's directions where they differ from that general advice.
How soon can I mow after feeding?
Follow the interval on the pack. Mowing too soon can lift granules or interfere with a combined treatment. If the instruction is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than borrowing a waiting period from another product or a foreign label.
How much lawn feed do I need per square metre?
Multiply the lawn area by your label's rate in grams per square metre, then weigh the result. For example, 40 m² at a stated 35 g/m² requires 1,400 g. That rate appears on the Miracle-Gro Complete 4 in 1 label and is not universal.
What should I do if the grass turns black or brown?
Stop and check whether the pattern follows an overlap, a spill or a spreader track. Collect visible excess and water the area thoroughly without run-off. Black moss may be an intended effect of an iron treatment, but blackened grass is not. Rake and reseed after you have dealt with the cause.
How long should children and dogs stay off the lawn?
Use the label's exact restriction, including any requirement to water and let the lawn dry. A universal number of hours would be misleading because products differ. Secure the bag, and contact a vet promptly if an animal swallows granules.
Should I collect the first grass clippings?
Use the grass box if the label tells you to collect early clippings, especially after a weed treatment. Follow its disposal guidance and keep treated cuttings away from animals. A straight fertiliser may differ, so do not copy one weed-and-feed pack's rule onto another product.
