Liquid or granular nitrogen fertiliser for the job

Updated: October 2026

You want one answer: liquid or granules. In this set there is no universal winner. A fast liquid and a lawn granule that claims a longer release are different jobs, and several liquids print no analysis. Liquid or granular nitrogen fertiliser is a trade-off you settle by the plant and by the label. The listings are on the [nitrogen fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/nitrogen-fertiliser). Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 19 October 2026. This page is from Peter F., the DIY and tools editor, using those listings, the RHS on fertiliser types, and BBC Gardeners' World on liquids versus pellets. This is not a lab test. Speed against a longer claim

Liquids and soluble powders are the fast feeds. BBC Gardeners' World says liquids tend to act immediately and need repeating, while pellets take longer and are usually one or two applications. The RHS points liquids at containers, and dry feeds at a longer release. A retail six-to-twelve-week line is not a test of these packs. Bottos bullets claim 60–90 days, with 52% of the nitrogen from Polyon on the 2 kg bullets. That curve was not measured here.

What the granules in this set are for

The granules are Bottos Sprint N. The 4 kg listing, at £29.01, prints 27-0-14 on the model and the bullets, and states 4 kg for 160 square metres. The 2 kg listing, at £13.87, states 2 kg for 80 square metres, and the title prints 27-5-15 against bullets of 27-0-14. A 27-0-14 granule is for a lawn you can weigh. How those two packs rank is on best nitrogen fertiliser.

What the liquids and the soluble powder are for

Hesi TNT Complex, 500 ml at £14.28, prints N P K 3-2-3 and no dose on amazon.co.uk. The maker's page says soil and coco and sends hydroponics elsewhere. It is not the granule's replacement on 80 square metres of turf. VegAzoto prints 300–500 g per 100 litres and no percentages. Plant origin is not an organic certification, and these listings do not turn the grams into millilitres. Vitax is a soluble powder with no NPK and no dilution. UK Grow, at £10.99, has neither a percentage nor a dose.

When to choose which

Choose the granule when the job is a lawn you can weigh and the bag prints a nitrogen-led analysis. In this set that is Bottos 4 kg. Choose a liquid when the job is a pot and the label prints a dilution. VegAzoto barely meets that bar. Vitax and UK Grow miss it. Do not put the lawn granule on tomatoes, or the 3-2-3 liquid on the lawn. For granules, water in if rain is not forecast, and follow the pack for a liquid. The steps are on how to use nitrogen fertiliser.

What this choice does not settle

The form does not settle the month. A 60–90 day claim is not permission to spread high-nitrogen granules in October. That calendar is on nitrogen fertiliser for lawns. A line that most of the nitrogen is organic, and the words natural origin, are not certification marks. If the job and the printed line match, the choice is a lawn plus a nitrogen-led granule, or a pot plus a liquid that tells you how to dilute it.

Common questions

Does a liquid nitrogen fertiliser work faster than granules?
Liquids and soluble powders are generally the fast option, and they need repeating. Pellets take longer and are often one or two applications. That is how BBC Gardeners' World and the RHS describe the forms. It is not a timed trial of Bottos against VegAzoto, and these listings do not give one repeat interval for every liquid.
Is the Bottos 60–90 day line a test of how long granules last?
No. The bullets claim 60–90 days, and the 2 kg bullets attribute 52% of the nitrogen to Polyon. The 4 kg title says slow-release. That curve was not measured here. A retailer's six-to-twelve-week line about granules in general is not a Bottos result either. Follow the lawn calendar rather than the longest number on the bag.
Which form suits an 80 square metre lawn, and which suits pots?
A granule with a printed nitrogen-led analysis suits the lawn, if you can weigh the coverage. Bottos states 2 kg for 80 square metres and 4 kg for 160. A 500 ml bottle at 3-2-3 is the wrong tool for that area, and a liquid with no percentage is worse. Pots and leafy crops want a liquid or soluble feed that prints a dilution. VegAzoto at least prints grams per 100 litres and still hides the percentage. A lawn granule is a clumsy fit on a small compost surface.
Is a soluble powder the same as a bottled liquid?
Both can act quickly once they are in water, and both need repeating compared with a dry granule. A powder has to be dissolved. Vitax is the powder here, and it has no dilution. VegAzoto, Hesi and UK Grow are liquids with very different labels. Do not share one rate across them.
What if the cheaper liquid prints no nitrogen percentage?
Then it is not the better buy. UK Grow at £10.99 undercuts Hesi at £14.28 and sits near the 2 kg Bottos price, and it prints no percentage and no dose. You cannot compare speed if you do not know the nitrogen. Do not put a 27-0-14 granule on tomatoes, or a 3-2-3 liquid on the lawn, just to use up an open pack.
Do you water both forms in the same way?
Water lawn granules in if rain is not forecast. A liquid might be a root drench or a foliar spray, and some foliar packs say not to wash the leaf at once. These listings do not print that split, so follow the pack you have. Do not assume every bottle wants a heavy watering-in just because the granule does.
