How to use natural fertiliser: dilute and water in

Updated: October 2026

You already have a meal sack or a concentrate, and the next hour is about not copying another brand's grams onto it. How to use natural fertiliser is the method on that pack, plus the months the Royal Horticultural Society names. This page is from Peter F., the DIY and tools editor, on 21 October 2026. The nine amazon.co.uk listings are on the [natural fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/natural-fertiliser), read with RHS feeding pages and GOV.UK animal-by-product guidance. Nobody here timed a watering. A qualifying Amazon purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Dilute the bottle you own, water in a meal that prints no grams, and know when to stop.

Dilute a liquid from that bottle's ratio

Maxicrop 2.5 L seaweed is 1:100. Sunshine 6 L and 20 L are 1:400. Safelawn is 50 ml in 4.5 L for 5 square metres, about 100 square metres per litre. Maxicrop lawn is 1:10 or 1:20. Maxicrop tomato is 4:2:6 and makes up to 200 L. Mix the bottle in your hand. A sheet of 45 ml in 9 L, 1:200, or farm 1:450 is another product. Shop lines of 20 ml per 4.5 L or 30 ml per 6 L for the tomato feed are retailer copy. Safelawn says spray. Sunshine 6 L says watering can or sprayer. Pour a leaking Maxicrop cap slowly. A 1:100 splash in a 1:400 bottle overfeeds. Form is on the natural fertiliser buying guide.

Water in a meal and do not invent grams

Topline 8 kg says water it in before sowing or planting, or as a top dressing, and not to exceed the rate. It prints no grams. Westland and Garden World lines of 70 g or 140 g are those brands. Do not borrow a handful. Bone meal 4 kg says work it in every 4 to 6 weeks from February to the end of October, and water in dry weather. Store it away from children, pets and food. Empathy has no printed rate either. Mix meals into the soil. Westland says dogs may eat fish, blood and bone, with grazing limits of two months for pigs and three weeks for other farmed animals. That is Westland's wording. Retail packs of 50 kg or less are exempt from the farm mixing-component rule. Category 1 animal by-products still cannot be fertiliser.

Stay inside the UK months

The RHS puts liquid feeding of containers mainly from April to September. Dry organics are a spring job. Bone meal's February-to-October window is that listing's interval, not a reason to use a high-nitrogen summer lawn liquid in October. Safelawn says every 1 to 2 weeks from March to October, not in frost. Maxicrop lawn says every 4 to 6 weeks in the growing season. Leave last summer's lawn bottle closed in October. Crop stage is natural fertiliser for vegetables.

Dogs, leaves, and a missing colour change

Overfeeding scorches, and granules left on leaves scorch. Water meals in and brush granules off foliage. High nutrients can inhibit mycorrhizal fungi, so do not pile Topline into the same hole as Empathy. If the lawn looks the same after a fortnight, do not double Safelawn. Reviews already split between greener grass in a week and no change after two to four weeks. Check water, shade, and the March-to-October window before you mix again. A dog that eats a large amount of bone meal needs a vet. There is no poison dose on this page. Call a professional, APHA, or your organic control body if you spread animal-derived fertiliser where livestock graze, or if a certified holding must match an inputs directory.

Common questions

How do I dilute the bottle I already have?
Use the ratio printed on that bottle. Maxicrop seaweed 2.5 L is 1:100. Sunshine 6 L and 20 L are 1:400. Safelawn is 50 ml in 4.5 L. Maxicrop lawn is 1:10 or 1:20. Maxicrop tomato is the 4:2:6 field on that listing. Another brand's millilitres do not transfer.
How do I apply fish, blood and bone or bone meal without a printed gram rate?
Water it in, work bone meal into the soil, and stay inside the listing's own warning not to exceed the rate. Do not copy 70 g or 140 g from Westland or Garden World onto Topline. If the tub in your hand still has no grams, read that tub rather than this page.
When do I start and stop in a UK year?
Liquids on pots mainly April to September. Dry organics are a spring job on the RHS pages. Bone meal in these listings names February to the end of October. Do not put a high-nitrogen summer lawn liquid on after September.
Can I use last summer's lawn liquid in October?
Not if it is a summer lawn feed. Safelawn's window is March to October while grass is growing and not in frost. After that you stop. October is late for a high-nitrogen liquid.
What do I do if the lawn looks the same after a fortnight?
Do not double the dose. Safelawn reviews already include no change after two to four weeks. Check water, frost, and the calendar before you mix again.
How do I keep dogs off bone meal?
Mix meals into the soil and store the sack away from pets and food, as the bone-meal listing says. Westland's published dog and grazing wording is Westland's. A dog that eats a large amount needs a vet.
Can I use the same ratio on Maxicrop and Sunshine?
No. 1:100 and 1:400 are different concentrates. Using one bottle's ratio on the other is how you overfeed or waste the can.
Will a heavy feed stop Empathy's mycorrhiza from working?
The RHS says high nutrients can inhibit mycorrhizal fungi. Do not stack a heavy meal on the same planting hole as the Empathy acer food.
