Peat-free houseplant compost and what the bag must say

Updated: October 2026

You want peat-free houseplant compost, and half the internet still talks as if retail peat bags became illegal in England in 2024. They did not. Peat compost can still be sold; only the words on the listing you buy make a peat-free claim defensible. The [houseplants compost comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/houseplants-compost) flags which amazon.co.uk products print that wording. This page covers the 2026 legal position and how to read bags among these listings. It does not score which mix grows the fastest. Prices are in pounds. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The ban that was announced

In August 2022 Defra announced an intention to ban sales of horticultural peat for amateur use in England from 2024. That announcement was widely reported as if the date were already law. It was not enacted as a statute on that timetable. RHS peat advice still states that no legislation is in place. A March 2026 parliamentary answer kept the government line that it would legislate when parliamentary time allows. Do not date a future ban as if it were already on the calendar. Retailer and charity policies are separate from statute. The RHS no-new-peat approach from January 2026 is a shop rule for RHS retail, not a criminal ban on every bag on amazon.co.uk. A B&Q peat-free Miracle-Gro ten-litre line with a different EAN is not proof that Miracle-Gro listing B084BWTB13 is peat-free.

What the bag has to say

The practical test from RHS peat-free guidance is simple: look for the words peat-free on the pack or the current product listing. If they are absent, the bag most likely is not peat-free. Organic, eco, natural, and environmentally friendly fail that test on their own. A reviewer who claims a new formula is peat-free is not a substitute for printed product wording. One Tigerbox review makes that claim; the Tigerbox bullets do not print peat-free, so the listing stays unmarked for buying purposes. Check this listing's current bullets and pack, not a garden-centre page for a similar name. If you need peat-free, treat silence as a no. A peat-free coir mix can still sit wet. Peat-free is a sourcing claim, not a free-draining score.

Which listings say peat-free

Peat-free is printed on Houseplant Focus two-by-eight litres, Lechuza Basicpon six litres, Basicpon twelve litres, Lechuza-PON eighteen litres, and in one bullet on Laeto's forty-litre houseplant mix. Focus is the clearest peat-free indoor twin for ordinary foliage pots. The Lechuza substrates are mineral and peat-free by wording; choose between Basicpon and PON on feed, not on peat. Laeto's peat-free bullet sits beside litre conflicts and smell reviews, so peat wording alone does not make it a bedroom default. Not printed here: Miracle-Gro houseplant ten litres, model 119769, the Miracle-Gro twin with a litre conflict, the Tigerbox twin, Westland eight litres, UK GROW five litres, Laeto's sixty-litre sack, and the DIVCHI block. Garden Health's peat-free Westland page is not automatically this eight-litre listing. For Focus versus an unmarked indoor bag, use best houseplant potting mix. For format before peat, use the houseplant compost buying guide.

Marks that are not a peat test

The Responsible Sourcing Scheme logo is a sourcing mark discussed in UK peat guidance. It is not printed on these listings, and it is not identical to the words peat-free on a bag. PAS 100 is a baseline for composted feedstock quality. It does not appear on these listings either, and it is not a houseplant prize or a peat-free certificate. You still need the printed peat-free line. Mineral pon is peat-free when the listing says so, which both Basicpon sizes and Lechuza-PON do. That does not decide whether you want stone substrate. Feed, weight, and rinsing belong on houseplant compost or pon. If your only goal is avoiding peat in a light organic bag, Focus is the indoor twin that states the claim clearly. If your goal is avoiding peat in a mineral system, the Lechuza bags state it while asking for a different watering habit.

Common questions

Is peat compost banned in England?
No retail ban is in force as statute on the 2024 timetable that was announced. Peat bags can still be sold. Government language in 2026 still pointed to legislating when parliamentary time allows, without turning that into a dated prohibition on this page.
Does the RHS still sell peat compost?
RHS retail policy from January 2026 is a shop no-new-peat approach. That is not the same as a nationwide legal ban on amazon.co.uk sellers. Check the retailer in front of you.
If a review says the formula is peat-free, is the listing peat-free?
Not for buying decisions. Use printed title, bullets, or pack wording. Reviews can be wrong, outdated, or about a different batch.
Which bags print peat-free?
Houseplant Focus, both Basicpon sizes, Lechuza-PON, and one Laeto forty-litre bullet. The Miracle-Gro and Westland listings here do not print it.
Is Miracle-Gro houseplant mix peat-free?
Not on the ten-litre listing, model 119769. Other Miracle-Gro codes in garden centres may differ. Do not copy a B&Q peat-free EAN onto this Amazon listing.
What is the Responsible Sourcing Scheme?
A UK sourcing mark discussed in peat guidance. It is not shown on these listings and does not replace a peat-free line on the bag you buy.
Does PAS 100 mean peat-free?
No. PAS 100 concerns composted feedstock standards. It is not a peat-free label and is not present on these listings.
Is pon peat-free?
The Lechuza Basicpon and Lechuza-PON listings print peat-free. Confirm on the pack you receive. Peat-free still leaves the feed and weight decisions open.
