How to lay bark mulch

Updated: October 2026

The bag is in the hall, the bed still has chickweed in it, and the soil has been dry for a fortnight. Laid like that, bark sits on dust and weeds. How to lay bark mulch, for a UK border or a pot, is a short method: clear perennial weeds, wet the soil if it is dry, spread at least 5 cm and ideally 7.5 cm, and keep the bark off woody stems. The bags are in the [bark mulch comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/bark-mulch). Peter F. followed Royal Horticultural Society guidance and the Amazon reviews on these listings. Before you open the bag

Take perennial weeds out first. A layer slows annual weed seed. It will not finish bindweed, couch, or ground elder that is already growing. Leave the surface even, so the chips do not vanish on the ridges. On a new bed the RHS allows a permeable membrane. A black plastic sheet is a poorer default under an established border. The soil wants to be moist and workable. Skip frozen ground and a bed sitting in water. If the surface is dry, water it and let that water soak in. Bark on dry soil sheds the next shower. Tip a little of the bag onto a board before you commit the sack. Plastic, glass, brick, and treated timber are a reason to stop. One Melcourt review from July 2026 reported rock, brick, glass, and plastic. White flecks can be mould, which the manufacturer describes as normal on some chips. Rubbish is a different finding. Wear gloves, and avoid the dust. The grade you bought is the bark mulch buying guide.

Depth and timing

The RHS asks for at least 5 cm of organic mulch and ideally 7.5 cm. The deeper figure you sometimes see, about 8–12 cm, is the RHS note for wood chip. Use 5–7.5 cm for bark on a bed. Lay from late autumn to late winter, or in early spring, once the soil is moist and not frozen. Summer is possible if you water first. Spread so the depth is even, and leave the chips on the surface. Digging fresh woody chips in can lock nitrogen for up to two years. Keep woody mulch off annuals, soft fruit, and shallow-rooted vegetables.

Around plants and on pots

Keep bark about 8–10 cm clear of woody stems. Bark piled on a stem holds moisture against it. Leave the same gap at a rose crown, and do not bury a perennial. Pots are easy to smother, because the surface is small. Fine composted bark belongs there as a thin top-dress, not a 7.5 cm cap of chunks. The composted bark versus chipped bark page is the fork if the texture is wrong. Melcourt composted fine bark is the bag reviewers use in pots, and it is listed at 20 kg, so tip it in small amounts. Paths take chippings more happily than fines, which turn to mud in a wet week.

Afterwards

A white bloom can be mould, and the manufacturer says that can be normal. Spread the bag outdoors, gloves on. A solvent smell, or a sack of plastic and glass, is the point to stop and contact the seller. This depth is for a garden bed. Under a swing or trampoline it is the wrong depth. None of the five bags shows an EN 1177 certificate. Read play bark depth before you cover a play set. Call a professional for a public playground or a fall over 600 mm, for a contaminated bag you cannot identify, and for a tree that is already failing.

Common questions

How deep should the layer be?
At least 5 cm, and ideally 7.5 cm, on a border. That is the RHS figure, and Rolawn states the same. One square metre at 75 mm needs about 75 litres, close to the RHS figure of about 70 litres per square metre. A 60 litre bag therefore covers under two square metres once you lay it properly. The 8–12 cm depth is the RHS note for coarser wood chip.
How far from the trunk?
About 8–10 cm of clear soil around woody stems and trunks. The RHS uses about 10 cm in its how-to and 8–10 cm in the woody-waste note. The same gap keeps bark off a rose crown. In a pot, a thick collar against the stem is the usual way a mulch smothers a plant, because there is so little surface to begin with.
Do I need membrane?
On an established border, weed the soil and mulch it. The RHS allows a permeable sheet on a new bed. One supplier argues that a sheet under chippings dries them and lets them blow. Use a permeable sheet only on a new planting where you have chosen it, and still lay 5–7.5 cm of bark on top.
Will it steal nitrogen?
Left on the surface, woody mulch is unlikely to starve established plants, and the RHS says extra fertiliser is not required first. The lock, for up to two years, is what can follow when fresh woody material is dug in. Keep chippings on top. Work composted fines into the top only when that product is sold as a conditioner. Keep woody mulch off annuals, soft fruit, and shallow-rooted vegetables.
How do I top it up next year?
Rake the remaining bark level, pull weeds that have come through, water if the soil is dry, and add enough to bring the layer back to about 5–7.5 cm. A bed that is still 5 cm deep does not need another full 7.5 cm on top. Keep the new chips out of the stem gap. If last year’s pile has buried the crowns, pull the level down before you add more.
