Bark mulch buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a border to cover and an amazon.co.uk basket that already holds a 60 litre bag. The title looks clear, then the details name a different volume or a product that is not bark. This bark mulch buying guide is the set of checks that should settle the sack before the price does: the grade, whether the litres agree, and what a litre costs. The five bags, from about £15.19 to £18.99 on 19 October 2026, are in the [bark mulch comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/bark-mulch). Peter F. read those listings and the Amazon reviews. He did not sieve a bag. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Bark mulch here is chipped or composted tree bark, sold by the litre for beds and borders. A coir disc, a fabric ring, gravel glue, or wood chippings can wear a mulch title and still be the wrong purchase. Inside real bark, the grade decides the job. Screened chippings stay on the surface and still look like bark. Composted fines are dark and crumbly. They suit clay, pots, and the top of a bed. You do not plant into them as if they were compost. If the photograph will not tell the grades apart, the composted bark versus chipped bark page walks through that fork. None of the five listings prints a particle size. You can still read the grade from the title. Which bag suits a border is on the best bark mulch page.

The checks on the listing

Read the title litres and the volume field as a pair. If they match, you have a figure for price and coverage. If they do not, you do not have a true litre count, and averaging them will not create one. Two bags agree with themselves. Laeto bark chippings, B09D8F1RFP, say 60 litres in the title and the volume field, at £15.19. Indigo chipped bark, B0D47TT91V, says 70 litres in the title, the unit count, and the volume field, at £15.99. Two bags disagree. Melcourt composted fine bark, B00WUQCPXM, says 50 litres in the title and 40 litres in a volume field, at £15.95. Laeto compost mulch, B0BX6ZMHJT, says 50 litres in the title and 60 litres in the volume field, at £18.99. Indigo composted bark, B0GSKTTLTR, agrees at 60 litres and £15.69, and 5.0 from one review is not a sample. Compare pence per litre on a volume you believe.

How far a bag goes

Litres equal square metres times the depth in millimetres. The Royal Horticultural Society says about 70 litres covers about one square metre. A whole border is rarely one amazon bag. Depth and the gap around stems are on the how to lay bark mulch page.

What to reject

Coir mats, fabric collars, gravel glue, and wood chippings are outside this category. Treated timber does not belong on soil. When the sack arrives, tip a little where you can see it. In the Amazon reviews, one July 2026 note on the Melcourt bag reported rock, brick, glass, and plastic. Laeto chipping reviews mention plastic and, in one case, wet logging waste. Those reports are not a rate for every bag. White mould on some chips can be normal, according to the manufacturer. Rubbish in the sack is a different finding from mould.

Common questions

How do I compare a £15 bag with a £20 bag?
Divide the shelf price by the litres you believe. On 19 October 2026 the indigo 70 litre chippings were £15.99, about 23p a litre, and the Laeto 60 litre chippings were £15.19, about 25p. A named grade at £19 for 60 litres is about 32p. The Melcourt bag at £15.95 only enters that sum once you choose 50 litres or 40 litres and say which. A higher bag price can still be the cheaper cover when the litres are real.
What if the title and the details disagree on litres?
Keep both numbers. Melcourt B00WUQCPXM says 50 litres in the title and 40 litres in a volume field. Laeto compost mulch B0BX6ZMHJT says 50 litres and 60 litres, and reviewers say the sack was much smaller. Buy a listing whose title and volume field match, or check the sack on arrival. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers goods that are not as described. Averaging the two figures does not produce the litres in the bag.
Does play bark in a bullet make it play-grade?
A bullet is not a test. The Laeto chippings say they are suitable as play bark, and the listing shows no EN 1177 certificate and no 20–80 mm range. The other four bags do not make the claim. Garden bark at 5–7.5 cm is a border layer. Play bark in BS EN 1176-1:2017 is a much deeper fill, with an extra allowance because loose bark moves.
How far does 60 litres go?
At 50 mm deep, 60 litres covers about 1.2 square metres before settlement. At 75 mm it covers about 0.8 square metres. The RHS figure of about 70 litres per square metre means one bag is about one square metre of a proper mulch. Add a little if you are allowing 5–10% for settlement, and measure the bed before you order a single sack.
Should I trust an RHS line in the title?
Treat it as a claim until you can see a licence. The Melcourt title says RHS endorsed. According to the product data, B00WUQCPXM has no licence number, and this page has not checked one. The listing still has to stand on the 50 litre title against the 40 litre volume field, the 20 kg weight, and the review pattern for a fine, heavy conditioner.
