Composted bark vs chipped bark

Updated: October 2026

Two bags look alike in an amazon.co.uk search, both called bark mulch. Composted bark vs chipped bark is a fork between a surface that should still look like bark and a fine, dark conditioner you can work into the top of the soil. Pick the job first. The five listings, from about £15.19 to £18.99 on 19 October 2026, are in the [bark mulch comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/bark-mulch). Peter F. used those pages, the Royal Horticultural Society’s notes on woody mulch, and Melcourt’s ornamental specification. He did not run a side-by-side bed trial. Two different materials

Chipped bark, sold as ornamental or decorative bark, is screened pieces that stay on the soil. According to the manufacturer, an ornamental specification is about 5–35 mm, laid at 50–100 mm. None of the chipped bags prints a millimetre range, so that is what a stated grade looks like, not a measurement of the sack. Composted fine bark has broken down into a dark crumb. It still mulches, and it conditions. The Melcourt bag here, B00WUQCPXM, does not print a 0–10 mm range. Wood chip is timber, not bark. A title that says wood chip has left this fork. How to read the litres is the bark mulch buying guide.

When to choose chippings

Choose chippings when the border or the path is the point, and you want the cover to look like bark after the winter. They last longer on the surface than fines. They do less to change a heavy clay. Rake them, keep them about 8–10 cm off woody stems, and leave them on top. Digging fresh chips in can lock nitrogen for up to two years. The chipped bags here are indigo B0D47TT91V, 70 litres at £15.99, litres agreed, and Laeto B09D8F1RFP, 60 litres at £15.19, also agreed. Neither gives you 5–35 mm in writing. Who should pick which is on the best bark mulch page. Skip chippings when the soil itself is the problem or the pot is small. Laying them is how to lay bark mulch.

When to choose composted bark

Choose composted bark for clay, a tired bed, or a pot, when a dark surface that breaks down is what you want. The bag is £15.95, 4.5 from 370 reviews, listed at 20 kg. The title says 50 litres and RHS endorsed. A volume field says 40 litres. According to the product data, no licence number is shown, so those RHS words stay a claim. One review reports glass, brick, and plastic. Tip it where you can see it. Indigo composted bark, B0GSKTTLTR, is the other straight composted listing: 60 litres agreed, £15.69. The rating is 5.0 from one review. Use it when you want the litres to match, and judge the crumb yourself. Work fines into the top only when the product is sold as a conditioner. Do not plant bedding into a trench of fine bark. On a pot, a thin top-dress holds moisture. The Melcourt sack is 20 kg, so decant it.

What this choice leaves out

This fork is a bark grade. It is not a play surface. Neither grade in this set carries an EN 1177 certificate, and 5–7.5 cm is the wrong figure under a swing. It is also not the Laeto compost mulch, B0BX6ZMHJT, unless you know you are buying a compost-style improver that contains bark. That listing is £18.99, and the litres on the page do not agree. If the border should still look like bark, buy chippings whose litres agree. If the job is clay, a pot, or the top of a bed, buy composted fine bark, and take the 20 kg lift seriously.

Common questions

Which one lasts longer on a border?
Chippings. Melcourt’s ornamental specification talks about two years or more if the layer is left undisturbed, at 50–100 mm, with some settlement. Composted fines break down faster, which helps when you wanted a conditioner and disappoints when you wanted a chip look in March. Top chippings up when the layer thins, and keep them off the stems.
Which one helps clay?
Composted fine bark. The Melcourt reviews mention clay, pots, and a fine, dark texture. Chippings cover clay and slow the weeds on top of it. They do not give you a crumb to work into the top layer. If drainage is the real fault, a mulch of either grade will not replace work on the soil itself.
Can I plant into composted bark?
Plant into soil or a proper compost, and use composted bark as a mulch or as a conditioner mixed into the top. Sherborne Turf’s guide says fines are not a growing medium. Mixing 0–10 mm bark into the top 150 mm, as a related Melcourt description puts it, is incorporation. A pot filled only with the sack is the wrong recipe.
Which is better in a pot?
Composted fine bark, as a thin top-dress on moist compost, with the stem still visible. Reviewers use the Melcourt bag that way, and you will be handling 20 kg, so decant. Chippings suit a large shrub in a big tub if you still leave a gap at the stem. The indigo composted listing names containers, and it has one review, so that pot line is the title’s.
Is the Laeto compost mulch the same as Melcourt fines?
Melcourt B00WUQCPXM is composted fine bark, 4.5 from 370 reviews, 20 kg, with a 50 litre title and a 40 litre volume field. Laeto B0BX6ZMHJT is a compost mulch and soil improver with composted bark, £18.99, 4.3 from 63 reviews, and a 50 litre title against a 60 litre field. Reviewers of the Laeto bag report short measure. Inspect it on arrival, and keep it out of the same-as-Melcourt basket.
