Wireless two way light switch: a second position without a new cable

Updated: October 2026

You want the hall light from the bottom of the stairs and from the landing, or the garage lamp from both doors, without a new cable in the plaster. A wireless two way light switch on amazon.co.uk is usually a second transmitter paired to one receiver. You can add that plate. You can keep the existing switch only where the listing says so, and in this set that means SURAIELEC’s S1 and S2 terminals. The receiver is still wired. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team. Prices and claims come from amazon.co.uk listings checked on 15 October 2026, with no lab test. The wider range is our [wireless light switches](/hub/electrical-equipment/wireless-switch) comparison. What follows is only the second position.

Two switches, without a strapper cable

A conventional two-way circuit runs a strapper between the switch positions, so either plate can change the same light. These kits pair extra plates to one receiver instead. That is pairing, not the old two-wire strapper. A promise of a second switch with no wiring oversells the kit, because the receiver still has to be connected on the circuit you already have. The top pick for that second plate, when the old switch can come out, is Thinkbee. UK reviews put the pattern in a garage and in a lounge, on a listing that claims up to eight plates at about £26.59. Eight is the seller’s ceiling, not a test in your walls. Put one plate at each end of the garage only after a press at the far door changes the lamp. If the existing switch must keep working too, most listings never say so.

When the old switch has to stay

Only SURAIELEC, among these listings, prints S1 and S2 and says the existing wall switch can stay, with two wireless wall controllers. It also states 10 A and 2,300 W, at the recorded about £15.99. Whether that load suits the lamp sits on the wireless light switch buying guide. A UK review says the buyer chose it so the old switch would remain. Two other UK reviews on the same listing pull back. One says the wiring was still the hard part, and another says the unit did not work. You still isolate the supply before you trust S1 and S2. DEWENWILS B0F995CSGK goes the other way. The bullets say 3-way and 4-way, the attribute says 1-way, and a UK review says the unit is single-pole and cannot be an extra switch. Listings often say 3-way for what Britain calls two-way. Leave this kit if the landing plate has to remain.

How many plates the listings claim

The number on the bullet is not a test. Thinkbee says up to eight plates, Candeo and ECO-NEWLEAF say up to ten, and LYGKJ says up to twenty and also 2-way, while an attribute on that listing says 1-way. None of those ceilings was measured for this page. Pair one extra plate and stop if the light does not change from the new spot. A 2-gang kinetic plate is two circuits on one face, not two ends of one light. Candeo’s 2-gang was about £44.99. For one lamp and two doors, a second single plate on the same receiver is the match.

What this does not fix

A second plate does not replace a missing neutral. If the receiver’s instructions ask for one and the cables in the box have none, the far doorway plate leaves that shortage at the receiver. The IET Part P FAQ for England and Wales gives adding a point on an existing circuit, outside a special location, as a non-notifiable example. A new circuit falls outside it. That example does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland. A bathroom is a separate stop. If a plate or the receiver would sit in a bathroom, use a competent person. Isolating the supply, and the moment you stop, is on how to install a wireless light switch. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Can I have two switches on one light without a new cable?
You can put two control positions on one light without a strapper between the boxes. These amazon.co.uk kits pair an extra plate to one receiver, which is what a wireless two way light switch is selling. The receiver still has to be connected, so you save the cable run and you still wire the receiver. Thinkbee’s UK reviews use that pattern for a garage and a lounge. If no second controller is named, assume one position.
Will my old switch still work?
Your old switch stays only if the listing says it can. SURAIELEC prints S1 and S2, with two wireless controllers, at a recorded about £15.99, and a UK review chose it for that reason. Another review says the wiring was still hard, and one says the unit did not work. Prefer those terminals when the plate must stay. They do not prove the receiver fits your box.
How many extra plates can I add?
Bullets claim eight plates for Thinkbee, ten for Candeo and ECO-NEWLEAF, and twenty for LYGKJ, and none of that was tested here. LYGKJ says 2-way in a bullet and 1-way in an attribute, so the twenty is already in dispute. Pair one extra plate and see the light change before you buy another. One ECO-NEWLEAF review about stone is a single house, not your walls.
Is a 2-gang kinetic the same as two-way?
A 2-gang kinetic plate is two circuits on one face, while two-way on these kits means extra positions for one light. Candeo’s 2-gang was about £44.99 on amazon.co.uk, and a UK review says the signals collide if you press both buttons at once. Use the 2-gang for two neighbouring lamps only if you can avoid that double press. Use a second paired plate when one lamp needs a switch at each door.
Why did one kit refuse to be an extra switch?
DEWENWILS B0F995CSGK would not work as an extra switch. Bullets say 3-way and 4-way, the attribute says 1-way, and a UK review says the unit is single-pole. American 3-way often means British two-way, which is why the bullet looks like a stair kit. Trust that review when you need a second position. To keep the old switch, look for terminals such as SURAIELEC’s S1 and S2, with the receiver still wired.
