Wireless light switch, no wiring: the checks before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You want a plate by the bed or beside the garage door, and you want to leave the plaster alone. Search for a wireless light switch with no wiring and amazon.co.uk mostly shows Wi-Fi switches for the back box you already have. The twelve kits in our [wireless switch comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/wireless-switch) are a radio plate plus a receiver you still connect at the lamp on a 230 V circuit. Leave this page knowing the radio, the cell, the neutral, and the lower load figure on that listing. Prices and star lines stay on the main table. The Products Compared editorial team read these listings on 15 October 2026 and did not run a lab test.

This is not the smart switch in the search results

On 15 October 2026 the visible UK results for a best wireless light switch were Wi-Fi and Zigbee round-ups. A Smart Home Assistant article in that set asks whether a smart switch needs a neutral, and it is about that other product. These 433 MHz and kinetic kits are absent from it. The article is a search snapshot, not the wiring regulation for your house. These listings are a plate talking to a receiver by radio. Several print 433 MHz, and the SURAIELEC KW02A01 prints 433.92 MHz. The DEWENWILS UHWLS21D1 names Alexa and Google Assistant only in an attribute, while the bullets describe RF.

Six checks, in this order

Confirm the radio, then the cell in the plate. Candeo, ECO-NEWLEAF, and ZLinkStar claim no battery. Elecora and Equiyoal include a 12 V 27A cell, Thinkbee a CR2032, and SURAIELEC a 12 V battery, while LYGKJ’s CSX-WXKG never says. The receiver stays on the mains either way. The longer split sits on kinetic or battery. Read the conductors before the load. ZLinkStar’s 05-01-W1v1 bullet says to connect live and neutral at the light, and to keep the receiver out of a metal box. If you cannot name the conductors at the rose, stop and follow how to install a wireless light switch. Thinkbee prints 10 A and 1,000 W. At 230 V that 10 A is 2,300 W, so 1,000 W is the lower figure on that page. SURAIELEC’s pair is 10 A and 2,300 W, and it does not travel onto LYGKJ or the Candeo 2-gang. Then match the box. Elecora and Thinkbee put two plates on one receiver. The Candeo 2-gang is one dual plate and two receivers. Only SURAIELEC prints S1 and S2. Use an IP code only when the page agrees with itself.

Where the listings disagree with themselves

ZLinkStar at about £19.99 prints IP66 in the title and IP00 in the attribute, so the waterproof line is unsettled, and we tested neither code. Equiyoal at about £7.49 prints 12 V in the attribute and AC 230 V, up to 1,500 W, in the bullet. The 5.0 score is two reviews, with the only text headed France. Elecora’s two listings share one pool at 4.3 from 163, including one sparks report, so do not add the counts.

What this page will not decide

On 15 October 2026 these amazon.co.uk files ran from about £7.49 to about £44.99. Thinkbee’s 4.8 from 316 reviews is a star average, and it says nothing about safety. GOV.UK still recognises CE marking beside UKCA in Great Britain. In this set the Candeo single-gang page and ECO-NEWLEAF print UKCA, while most other pages print CE. In England, SI 2012/3119 makes a new circuit, a consumer-unit replacement, or work within 0.6 m and 2.25 m of a bath or shower notifiable. Ordinary buildings in Wales sit outside that instrument. The IET’s non-notifiable lighting-point example covers England and Wales, not Scotland or Northern Ireland. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Does “no wiring” mean I do not touch the electrics?
On these kits, “no wiring” means you are not chasing a new cable to a second switch position. The receiver still connects at the lamp, on a supply the listings treat as about 230 V, and some ask for live and neutral there. A kinetic claim, or a cell in the plate, leaves that relay on the mains. If you cannot name the conductors in the rose, stop and use a registered electrician.
Is this the same as a Wi-Fi smart switch?
These twelve kits link a plate to a receiver at 433 MHz, or on an RF frequency the page leaves blank. Wi-Fi and Zigbee wall switches are a different product, and a UK search for the best wireless light switch currently fills with them. DEWENWILS B08S2PMJSS names Alexa and Google Assistant only in a controller attribute, while the bullets describe RF. Choose a smart switch for voice or a schedule, and a radio kit when you want a plate without an app.
Do I need a neutral?
You need the conductors named on the listing you are buying. ZLinkStar’s bullet says to connect live and neutral at the light, and to avoid a metal box because metal shields the signal. Reviews describe wall switches marked L1 and COM, a different pair from a neutral at the rose. One UK article judges that most back boxes have no neutral, which is that article’s judgement. If you cannot point to the pair the receiver needs, ask an electrician before you order.
Why do two Elecora products show the same 163 reviews?
The one-plate kit at about £7.49 and the two-plate kit at about £8.49 share one amazon.co.uk pool: 4.3 from 163, with the same wording and the same rank. Adding the two lines would count one sample twice. That wording includes a single report of sparks, which is one account rather than a recall. The one-plate page also has a German-language highlight stating both 1,500 W and 200–2,000 W, so the shared stars leave the load unsettled.
When is a wireless light switch a job for an electrician?
Ask an electrician if the conductors are unclear, if a breaker trips at once, if the room has a bath or shower, if you need a new circuit, or if a unit has sparked. In England, SI 2012/3119 makes a new circuit, a consumer-unit change, or bathroom-zone work notifiable, out to 0.6 m and up to 2.25 m. Ordinary Welsh buildings are outside that instrument. The IET example of a non-notifiable extra lighting point covers England and Wales, not Scotland or Northern Ireland.
