Toggle switch buying guide: plate, bat, mini or rocker

Updated: October 2026

You have the old plate off a hallway wall, or a hole marked on a van panel, and amazon.co.uk has answered both with one search. A brushed-brass lighting plate, a metal bat, a packet of minis and a rocker with a boot can all be titled toggle switch. This toggle switch buying guide is the fork before a shortlist: which of the four families matches the opening in front of you. Figures come from twelve amazon.co.uk listings dated 15 October 2026. The Products Compared editorial team did not bench-test any switch. The table of the twelve is the [toggle switch comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/toggle-switch). Four things amazon.co.uk calls a toggle

In this set amazon.co.uk mixes a wall plate, a panel bat, a mini, and a rocker the title still calls a toggle. A back box, a round hole in sheet metal and a 6 mm hole in a model do not take the same part. Both lighting plates state 10 A: Knightsbridge brushed brass, 1-gang 2-way, at about £12.70 with 4.4 stars from 145 reviews, and the white plastic plate at about £3.61 with 4.5 stars from 2,675. The white plate's table also prints Wi-Fi, IP65 and a 2 mm body. The bullets describe an ordinary plate, so leave those cells out. None of the twelve is an intermediate switch.

Read the whole rating line

On the Gebildet metal bats, 25 A is the 12 V DC line in a bullet that also states 15 A at 24 V DC, 10 A at 250 V AC and 15 A at 125 V AC. The cover on the bat at about £4.99 does not raise that current. Keep 25 A for a 12 V accessory. The Gebildet mini states 6 A at 125 V AC and 3 A at 250 V AC, a weak stand-in for a 10 A plate. A 12 V panel switch sits outside the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 (50 to 1,000 V AC and 75 to 1,500 V DC). A 230 V plate sits inside them.

Pins, hole and terminal

Match the printed hole. A punch at 12.0 mm can stop a 12.2 mm bush starting, and a 12.2 mm drill can leave a 12 mm switch loose. QWORK's 20-pack, model MTS-102, is titled SPST and also ON-ON with three pins. United Kingdom reviews say the body melts under a soldering iron and then shorts. Three-pin ON-ON is a changeover, so a plain off means leaving one throw unused. Krysel is marked IP00. A rubber cap is still only a cover.

What the twelve listings cost

The files run from about £2.99 to about £12.70. That spread prices four jobs, so it is a poor quality ladder. The sample says nothing about a £40 plate. The white plate's 4.5 stars rest on 2,675 reviews, while Uliwamowi's 5.0 rests on four and Krysel's 5.0 on eight. A thin top score is a weak reason to ignore the mounting. In England, Approved Document P (2013) treats a like-for-like replacement as generally non-notifiable, and the work still has to be safe. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland keep their own rules, Wales since 31 July 2014.

Common questions

Which rating line is the 25 A figure on the metal bats?
On the Gebildet metal bats, 25 A is the 12 V DC line. The same bullet states 15 A at 24 V DC, 10 A at 250 V AC and 15 A at 125 V AC, and the covered bat at about £4.99 repeats it. Use 25 A for a 12 V accessory inside that claim. On a 230 V lighting circuit, read 10 A at 250 V AC, and remember the body is still a panel bat for a hole.
What hole sizes are actually stated?
The Gebildet metal bats state 12.2 mm and 6.35 mm spades. Both Gebildet rocker eight-packs and the QWORK four-pack with caps state 12 mm. The Gebildet mini eight-pack states 6 mm. Krysel's snap-in gives 23 mm outer and 20 mm inner, a rectangular clip beside those round holes. Uliwamowi prints no hole in the cells we used, so taking 12 mm from another listing would be a guess.
When is a rocker in this set still a toggle?
Krysel's five-pack, both Gebildet rocker eight-packs and the QWORK four-pack stay because the titles and the Car Toggle Switches rank present them as toggles. The body is still a rocker, a snap-in or a 12 mm hole, and the Gebildet and QWORK bullets state 10 A at 12 V DC and 6 A at 24 V DC. Use one for a 12 V panel lamp, and use the two screw-on plates when the job is a 1-gang lighting switch.
Does a rubber cap or an IP00 cell mean the switch is waterproof?
Krysel's table says IP00, which in the usual code is no stated protection against dust or water. Uliwamowi says waterproof and leaves the IP cell empty. The caps with Gebildet's rocker eight-pack at about £8.99 and QWORK's four-pack at about £5.95 have no IP code attached. A boot can shield the lever from a fingertip or a light splash. These twelve files do not give a tested weatherproof rating to quote.
Why do the white plate's Wi-Fi and IP65 cells not describe the product?
The white plate at about £3.61 has bullets for an ordinary 10 A lighting plate, while its table also prints Wi-Fi, IP65 and a 2 mm body. Those cells disagree with the bullets, so they should not choose the switch. You will see the same clash as a prewired title beside a solder cell, and as SPST beside ON-ON with three pins. Buy what the bullets and the terminal line both support.
