Steam generator iron leaking water: when to stop

A steam generator iron leaking water may be scale, a cold soleplate or a split hose. Stop on the clothes, then separate a soleplate drip from a body leak.

Brown water has spotted a white shirt, or a drip is running off the soleplate onto the board. Descale and unplug are different jobs. Marks and a spit from the holes often belong to scale, a cold plate or the steam setting. Water from the body, the base, the cable or a split hose is a stop.

A steam generator iron leaking water needs that fork before any bottle comes out of the cupboard. Iron the next shirt only after a towel test has gone clean. If the water is leaving the hose or the casing, do not switch the station back on to watch it. Vinegar is not the test, and it is not the repair.

Products Compared used Morphy Richards and Philips UK support pages, GOV.UK on faulty goods, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015, in October 2026. We did not open these stations on a bench. A qualifying purchase from a link to amazon.co.uk can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The leaflet for your model outranks a general page, including this one.

In short

Stop on the clothes as soon as you see brown water or marks: that water is often scale, and the calc routine for your model is the first fix, tested on an old towel. A soleplate drip can be a station that is not ready, an overfilled tank, or leftover water after descaling. Water from the body, the hose, the base or the plug means unplug, and scale from skipped care is not automatically a refund.

Stop on the clothes first

Morphy Richards tells Easy Steam owners to stop ironing clothes when the station releases brown water or leaves marks. Finish the seam only if the cloth is already scrap, then take the station off the pile. A white school shirt is how a small flush becomes a ruined load.

Look at where the water is. Soleplate holes, as a brown spit or a flake, are the maintenance branch. A wet hose, a pool under the base, or water at the cable entry is the stop branch. Do not run a calc cycle to see a body leak, and do not keep steaming to see if the brown clears onto the next garment. Use an old towel only after you know the water is leaving through the soleplate rather than a split line.

Brown water and flakes are often scale

On the Easy Steam page, brown water is often scale or deposits, not a broken pump on the first stain. Morphy Richards names Calc Clean, repeated if residue remains, then a test on an old towel. Empty a tray only when it has cooled. Philips treats brown stains and leaks as what regular descaling is meant to prevent, and says to repeat the routine if flakes remain.

White flakes on the very first use can be normal while a new steam path clears, Philips says, so do not reject the iron before the manual purge. Flakes that continue after real use, or that mark cloth once the first sessions are over, go back to the calc routine. Perfumed water is not a factory flake. Philips treats it as something that can damage the iron.

The button sequence, the cooling time and the collector belong to the model, so this article does not print them. The steps live in how to descale a steam generator. Vinegar and a kettle descaler stay out of the tank on both the Philips and the Morphy Richards pages cited here. One proper cycle, then a repeat if that maker says residue can remain, is the limit. A kitchen acid can turn a scale flush into a damaged seal. If the towel is still brown after the routine your booklet names, stop.

A drip from the soleplate is not a split hose

Morphy Richards separates a soleplate drip from water leaving the body. Drips from the holes can mean the station is not ready, the steam setting is wrong, or the tank is overfilled. Wait for the ready light, drop a boost the cloth cannot take, and pour back to the max line. Powerful steam can look like a leak when it is a heavy jet.

Philips says leftover water after descaling is common, so a drip in the minutes after a calc cycle is not, on its own, a failed boiler. Steam the purge onto a thick cloth and look at that cloth rather than a shirt. In hard water, the Philips soleplate page points at a 50/50 mix. That mix is a water rule, not a leak repair, and it is not the rule for every other brand. The fill decision sits on the hard-water steam generator guide.

If the ready light is on, the tank is at the line, the setting matches the cloth, and a towel still spits dirty water after the calc routine, you have left the not-ready explanation. If the water is not coming from the holes, you were never in this section.

Water from the body, hose or plug means stop

Morphy Richards is direct about water from the tank body, the base, the cable entry or a damaged tank: stop, unplug if it is safe, and do not switch the station back on to test or to photograph the stream. Contact their customer service for those models. A split hose is the same fault. Tape is not a repair you can iron through. Steam finds the split, and so does boiling water.

A warm, discoloured or hot-smelling plug or lead is the same stop, even with no drip. Leave it out of the socket. Auto-shut-off does not make that safe. Notes on this shortlist put the Tefal GV9230 at about 8 minutes and the Hamilton Beach and Morphy Richards figures at about 10. A timer is not permission to leave a leaking hose plugged in.

If the base is sitting in water and you cannot reach the plug safely, switch off at the wall socket without touching the wet unit, then get a competent person. Do not mop the base while it is live, and do not switch it on just to see.

When a fault is the seller's problem

The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a short-term right to reject faulty goods within 30 days. After that, the trader's duty moves toward repair or replacement. For six months, a fault is presumed to have been present at delivery unless the trader proves otherwise. GOV.UK describes that shape, and nidirect describes the same 30-day right for Northern Ireland.

That clock is about a fault, not a change of mind. Scale from a skipped calc cycle, vinegar, or water the booklet forbids is not automatically that fault. A first-use flake that Philips calls normal is not a rejection on its own. A leak from the hose or the body on a careful first fill, with the water the manual allows, is what you raise with the seller, with the model number and the date.

Amazon's returns window is a separate policy, and this page does not state a number for it. Start with the seller you paid. The maker's helpline is for the leaflet routine, not the refund the trader owes. Brown water after months without a descale does not show a fault at delivery. A split hose in the first week, with the station left unplugged, is a clearer story. Do not keep using a leaking base while you decide.

The twelve amazon.co.uk rows sit on the steam generator comparison. The top pick featured here is the Tefal Pro Express Protect GV9230, ASIN B08XXYC9L8, which shares the highest rating score on that set, 90, with two other Pro Express Protect listings. The tie means it has not outscored them. A score of 90 is not a leak test, and it does not clear a dripping hose. You can open the listing on amazon.co.uk.

Use how to use a steam generator for the first fill and the purge, which is a different job from a leak months later. Water choice sits on the hard-water guide linked above. A replacement still needs the water rule in its own manual. A best-value row is a poor answer to a live leak from the casing. We did not run a leak test on the GV9230.

Common questions

Why is brown water coming out of my steam generator?
Morphy Richards treats brown water from an Easy Steam generator as scale or deposits until a calc routine says otherwise. Stop ironing clothes, run Calc Clean, and repeat if residue remains, then test on an old towel. It is not automatically a broken pump. Philips links brown stains and leaks to a missed descale, and says to repeat the routine if flakes remain. Keep vinegar out. If brown water continues after the cycle printed for your model, unplug and speak to the seller or a competent repairer.
Are white flakes on the first use a fault?
Philips says white flakes on the very first use can be normal, so do not reject the station for that alone. They can be residues from manufacture working out of a new steam path. Perfumed water is a different matter. Philips treats it as something that can damage the iron, which is misuse, not a fault that arrived in the box. After the first sessions, flakes that keep marking cloth belong with the calc routine. If they remain once that routine has been repeated, contact Philips or the seller.
It drips from the soleplate. Is that a leak?
A drip from the holes is often the station not being ready, the steam setting, or an overfilled tank. Morphy Richards lists those checks for an iron or a steam generator that leaks from the soleplate. Powerful steam can look like a leak when it is simply a heavy jet. Philips also says leftover water after descaling is common. Work through the ready light, the max fill line and a towel test before you call the base failed. Water running from the body is a different problem.
Water is coming from the hose or the base. Can I keep using it?
No. Morphy Richards tells you to stop if water comes from the tank, the body, the base, the cable entry or a damaged tank. Unplug if it is safe, and do not switch the station back on to photograph the leak. The same stop covers a split hose. Tape is not a repair. Auto-shut-off does not make a wet lead safe to leave in the socket. Contact the seller or someone competent to repair mains appliances.
I descaled it and it still drips. What now?
One proper cycle can leave residue, so Morphy Richards says to repeat Calc Clean if brown water or marks remain, then test on an old towel. Philips says to repeat the routine if flakes remain. A second home-made chemical, including vinegar, is not the next step. If the model's own routine has been completed and the soleplate still will not steam cleanly, stop. A drip from the hose or the casing was never a descale job. Unplug, note the model number, and contact the seller.
Can I claim a refund for limescale?
Scale from skipped maintenance, vinegar, or the wrong water is not automatically a fault in the goods. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 short-term right to reject covers goods that were faulty. A boiler furred because the calc light was ignored is a maintenance problem, and perfumed water is misuse. Brown water that the proper cycle clears is the routine working. If the station leaked from the body or failed to steam on first use, with the right water and no vinegar, raise that with the seller.
How long do I have to reject a faulty station?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject faulty goods within 30 days. After that, the trader may repair or replace. For the first six months, a fault is presumed to have been present at delivery unless the trader proves otherwise. GOV.UK sets out that shape for faulty goods, and nidirect describes the same 30-day right for Northern Ireland. Those 30 days are not a change-of-mind window, and this page does not invent Amazon's returns window.
Who do I contact, the seller or a repairer?
For a fault you believe was present when you bought the station, start with the seller. The short-term right to reject, and later repair or replacement, are rights against the trader. The maker's helpline suits a calc light, a setting, or a part the manual tells you to rinse. A split hose, water at the cable, or a hot lead is not a helpline experiment. Leave the station unplugged and use the seller or a person competent to repair mains equipment.
