Steam generator hard water: what to pour in, and when to stop

Updated: October 2026

A furred kettle is the clue. In a hard-water part of the UK, the same cold tap will crust a steam generator you already own. You need a pour you will actually use, and a stop if the steam does not return. This page is that steam generator hard water decision. What to buy stays on the [steam generator comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/steam-generator). What UK hard water does to a steam generator

UK regulations set no standard for hardness, calcium, or magnesium. The Drinking Water Inspectorate says about 200 mg/l as calcium carbonate, or higher, produces scale, and that hard water scales electric irons. Its guide puts hard water at about 200–300 mg/l and very hard water above 300 mg/l. Scale is calcium and magnesium left as water heats. Which? says it blocks steam vents, so a furred kettle and a spitting soleplate are one fault. Use your water company’s quality report for the local figure. The rating-plate booklet is the pour, because Philips, Tefal, and Morphy Richards do not share one recipe.

Tap, distilled, or a mix — only as that brand prints it

There is no single UK pour for hard water. Follow the booklet that matches the rating plate. Philips UK designs its steam irons and steamers for tap water. In a hard area it also allows distilled or demineralised water, or a 50% demineralised mix with tap. It forbids vinegar, starch, tumble-dryer water, perfume, descaling agents, ironing aids, and chemically descaled water. Tefal’s GV9460 Protect manual says untreated tap water, and a 50/50 distilled mix only if the water is very hard. Softened, scented, and bottled water are out. That manual is not every Tefal, and it is not Philips. Morphy Richards prints three lines that do not agree. RN332000 caps distilled, deionised, or demineralised water at 50% with tap. Easy Steam 333030 support prefers those waters at 100%. RN333200 recommends them and puts the wrong water outside the guarantee. This set’s model is the 333202 at 3,000 W, so those booklets are not yours, and an unmatched plate means the water rule is n/a. Russell Hobbs is designed for tap water, with half distilled and half tap, or distilled only, in very hard water. The web page may not be the slip in either box.

A routine you will actually run

Whichever water you were allowed, scale is still the booklet’s job. Which? suggests a monthly rinse for hard water or frequent ironing. That habit does not replace your station’s calc routine. Philips suggests a descale every one to two months against brown stains, brown water, and leaks. Tefal’s GV9460 manual wants the boiler rinsed about every 10 uses, or about monthly, more often in a hard area, with no descaling product in the boiler. A Tefal rinse is not a Philips cycle, and emptying a Russell Hobbs tank after use is storage, not a calc programme you can borrow. After your routine, steam an old towel before a shirt.

When no steam means stop

Stop once that model’s calc routine is finished and steam is still absent. Philips says descaling alone may not bring steam back. Call the seller or a competent person before a stronger chemical. Philips already refuses vinegar and shop descalers, and the GV9460 manual bars a descaling product in the boiler. The same stop covers a heat-damaged plug or lead, water from the body or a split hose, and a BS 1363 fuse you are not confident to change. Change a fuse only when the booklet gives the rating and the plug is sound. If the towel is still dry or still brown, unplug and speak to the seller or someone competent on mains appliances.

Common questions

Should you use tap water or distilled water?
Follow the rating plate. Philips allows tap water and, in hard areas, distilled or demineralised water or a 50% demineralised mix. Tefal’s GV9460 allows untreated tap water, and half distilled only if the water is very hard. RN332000 caps distilled at 50% with tap, while 333030 support prefers 100% distilled, deionised, or demineralised water. Neither Morphy page is the 333202 booklet.
Can you put vinegar in a steam generator iron?
No. Philips forbids vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids, and chemically descaled water. Easy Steam 333030 support also bars vinegar, and that page is not every Morphy Richards model. Tefal’s GV9460 manual bars a descaling product in the boiler. Vinegar that cleared a kettle is not a method for this tank.
Does demineralised water mean you can ignore the descale light?
Not on a Philips. Demineralised water should prevent limescale, but the descale light can still come on from time in use, and you run the routine so you can iron again. Philips also suggests a cycle every one to two months against brown stains, brown water, and leaks. That pair of points is Philips only. It is not a Tefal boiler rinse.
Is softened water safe in the tank?
Do not treat a domestic softener as clearance to fill the tank. The Drinking Water Inspectorate says ion-exchange softeners add sodium, and that drinking water should come from an unsoftened tap. Tefal’s GV9460 manual forbids softened water. If your booklet never mentions a softener, the answer is n/a. Less scale is not an allowance to pour it in.
What should you do if there is still no steam after descaling?
Stop if steam is still missing after that model’s own calc routine. Philips says descaling alone may not fix a generator that produces no steam. Leave vinegar and shop descalers alone. The same stop covers a damaged plug or lead, a split hose, water from the body, and a BS 1363 fuse you are unsure about. Call the seller or a competent person.
