How to descale a steam generator iron: the model routine

The calc light is on or the steam has faded. Descale your steam generator iron with that model's own routine. Keep vinegar and kettle descaler out of the tank.

The calc light has come on halfway through a pile of school shirts, or the steam fades before you reach the collar. The first result tells you to fill the tank with vinegar. That result is written for a plain steam iron. A steam generator that already has a calc programme wants the routine in its own leaflet.

How to descale a steam generator iron starts with the model on the rating plate. Philips, Morphy Richards and Tefal publish different openings, so one brand's sequence is a poor match for another. Vinegar, a chemical descaler and scented ironing water stay out of the tank where those makers ban them. If steam is still missing after that cycle, stop and speak to a competent repairer.

Products Compared used Philips, Morphy Richards and Tefal UK support pages, a Which? note on cleaning an iron, and the amazon.co.uk listings in our steam generator comparison, in October 2026. We did not descale these stations in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

Use the calc programme printed for your model, and only after the base has cooled for the time that maker gives. Keep vinegar, kettle descaler and detergent out of the tank. Steam the flush onto a thick cloth, then stop if the steam still fails to return.

Use the routine printed for your model

Open the booklet for the base you own before you touch a valve. A flashing calc light means the station wants its own clean cycle. Philips describes an Easy De-Calc opening. Morphy Richards describes Calc Clean or Auto Clean. Tefal, on the FASTEO SV6020 instructions, describes a scale collector you rinse. A similar-looking light does not turn those into one job.

Give the appliance the cooling time written for it. Philips tells you to unplug and wait at least two hours before Easy De-Calc. Tefal's FASTEO page tells you to wait at least an hour before you rinse the collector. The water that comes out, and the soleplate, can still burn after either pause. Keep children away from the cup or tray.

A collector you slide out is a different part from a plug you pull, and from a tank that has to stay seated for the whole cycle. If your model is absent from the notes below, the leaflet wins. Our steam generator comparison ranks stations sold on amazon.co.uk and leaves the maintenance steps to the manual.

What you must not pour in

The tank takes the water your manual allows. Philips UK tells owners to keep vinegar, starch, tumble-dryer water and descaling agents out of a steam generator. Morphy Richards tells Easy Steam owners to keep vinegar, chemical descaler and detergent out of the tank. Tefal's FASTEO instructions keep detergents and descaling products off the soleplate and the base.

Which? says to use the built-in programme first. The vinegar rinse it describes applies only when the iron has no descaling system. A generator with a calc light already has one, so this article leaves that vinegar rinse out. A kettle descaler is mixed for a kettle element, and the makers above tell you to leave it out.

Households in hard-water areas see scale sooner, and the brands publish different rules for tap water, distilled water and a filter jug. Read hard water and a steam generator before you change what you fill. A completed calc cycle still needs the water that model allows.

What the big brands actually describe

The notes below are the routines those makers publish for named models. If your leaflet disagrees, follow the leaflet.

Philips Easy De-Calc

Philips UK sets out Easy De-Calc for families that include PerfectCare Elite, the 8000 series and the 7000 series. Unplug and cool for at least two hours. Drain into a cup of at least 900 ml, then flush with distilled water. Philips gives 500 ml or 900 ml depending on the family. Heat the station again and steam onto a thick cloth for about three minutes.

The flushed water and the soleplate are hot, so keep that steam on the cloth. Philips publishes a one-to-two-month reminder, and that figure belongs to Philips. A Morphy Richards light that waits for a volume of water is a different trigger, which is why how often to descale a steam generator is its own question. If your Philips base sits outside those named families, use the steps Philips prints for that model.

Morphy Richards Calc Clean

When an Easy Steam generator releases brown water or leaves marks, stop ironing clothes and run Calc Clean. Keep vinegar, chemical descaler and detergent out of the tank. Empty the tray only once it is cool, then test on an old towel. The tray is hot straight after the cycle.

The SteamElite Plus 332013 page is a separate sequence. Auto Clean is prompted after about 5 litres have gone through and takes about three minutes. Leave the tank seated while it runs, because the water that comes out is very hot. A SpeedSteam, or another Morphy Richards base, can use another control. Match the model number on the rating plate.

Tefal scale collector

Tefal's FASTEO SV6020 instructions say to leave the appliance off for at least an hour, then rinse the scale collector under the tap. Keep detergents and descaling products away from the soleplate and the base, and keep the iron and the base clear of the tap. Only the collector, once it is out and the station has cooled, goes under the tap.

Our top pick on rating score is the Tefal Pro Express Protect GV9230. It shares the comparison's highest stored score, 90, with other Pro Express Protect listings, from 4.5 stars on amazon.co.uk. The listing names a calc collector. The GV9230 manual still decides its calc steps, so copying the FASTEO rinse forces the wrong opening.

After the cycle, test on a towel

Philips tells you to steam the flush onto a thick cloth for about three minutes. Morphy Richards tells you to test an Easy Steam on an old towel after Calc Clean, and to empty the tray only once it has cooled. Brown flecks mark a pale shirt the moment the steam touches it, so use a cloth you can stain.

Keep the test on the towel until the steam looks clear, then stop. The three-minute Philips flush is the duration published for that routine. If the calc light is still on after you have completed the steps for your model, return to the leaflet once. A second flush that adds a product the manual bans is how tanks and seals get damaged.

Leave the base to cool before you put it away. The tray or cup can still scald after the light goes out. On the Tefal FASTEO page, the collector is rinsed under the tap and the base stays dry.

When descaling is not the fix

Finish the cycle your manual describes, then judge the steam on the towel. Steam that is still missing, still weak, or still spitting brown water means you stop using the station on garments. Philips states that a no-steam fault is sometimes left in place by descaling. A blocked hose, a failed pump or a fault in the iron can look the same.

Brown water, leaks and when to stop separates a brown flush from water at the hose or the body. Morphy Richards treats brown water from an Easy Steam as a cue for Calc Clean and a towel test. Water leaving the body, the hose joint or the soleplate in a steady drip can be another fault.

Unplug the station, let it cool, and give the seller or a competent repairer the model number plus what the cycle did: whether any steam returned, whether the cloth marked, and whether the calc light went out. This guide ends at the home routine the maker publishes. Opening the base sits past that line.

The first session is a different job

The day you unbox a steam generator, you fill the tank, heat the base, purge the iron and check the hose. That session is first use. Descaling comes later, when the maker's light, time interval or water volume says scale is due. Mixing the two runs a calc cycle on a new tank, or skips the first purge.

Keep first use on how to use a steam generator. A new station can still hold a little factory residue. Purging that onto a cloth follows different steps from Easy De-Calc, Calc Clean or a collector rinse, and the first steam is dirty steam.

Common questions

How do I descale a steam generator iron?
Find the model on the rating plate and follow the calc routine that maker prints for it. Philips, Morphy Richards and Tefal use different openings: an Easy De-Calc drain, a Calc Clean or Auto Clean cycle, or a scale collector you rinse once it is out. Cool the station for the time that model states. Keep vinegar and descaler out of the tank, and steam the flush onto a thick cloth. If your model is missing from those pages, use the leaflet in the box.
Can I put vinegar in a steam generator?
Keep vinegar out of a steam generator tank. Philips tells you to keep vinegar, starch, tumble-dryer water and descaling agents out. Morphy Richards tells Easy Steam owners to keep vinegar, chemical descaler and detergent out. Which? limits a vinegar rinse to an iron with no descaling system, and a generator with a calc light already has one. Follow the routine in the manual, and leave the vinegar in the kitchen.
What should I do when the calc light flashes?
Treat the light as a prompt to open the instructions for your model. Philips describes a reminder in the one-to-two-month range. On the Morphy Richards SteamElite Plus, Auto Clean follows about 5 litres of water through the station. A phone calendar can miss either trigger. Run the cycle the leaflet names, after the cooling time it gives. If the light stays on after that cycle, check the steps once more, then stop if the steam is still poor.
Why is the water from my steam generator brown?
Brown water is loosened scale leaving the steam path. Morphy Richards tells Easy Steam owners to stop ironing clothes when brown water or marks appear, then to run Calc Clean and test on an old towel. Empty the tray only after it has cooled. Philips has you steam the Easy De-Calc flush onto a thick cloth. If brown water continues after your model's routine, unplug the station. A drip from the hose or the body can be a separate fault.
Can I rinse the steam generator base under the tap?
Rinse under the tap only the part your manual names. Tefal's FASTEO SV6020 instructions say to rinse the scale collector after the appliance has been off for at least an hour, and to keep the iron and the base away from the tap. A Philips Easy De-Calc routine drains into a cup of at least 900 ml. That is a different opening. Holding the whole base under the tap wets seals the FASTEO page keeps dry.
How long should a steam generator cool before descaling?
Use the wait printed for your model. Philips says at least two hours before Easy De-Calc. Tefal's FASTEO page says at least an hour before you rinse the collector. Keep those figures separate. The drained water and the soleplate can still burn afterwards, so use the cup or tray the manual allows and keep your hands out of the steam. If the booklet gives another time, follow that time.
My steam generator still will not steam after descaling. What now?
Stop once you have completed the routine for your model. Philips says descaling sometimes leaves a no-steam fault in place, so a second home-made cycle is a weak plan. Unplug the station, let it cool, and note the model number. Contact the seller or someone competent to repair mains appliances. Keep vinegar, kettle descaler and detergent out of the tank while you wait. Weak steam or fresh brown marks on the towel are where this job ends.
Is descaling the same as filling a steam generator for the first time?
Filling a new station is a different job from descaling. First use means filling, heating, purging onto a cloth and checking the hose. Descaling comes later, when a calc light, a published interval or a water volume says scale should be flushed. A new tank has no call for vinegar, and no call for a collector rinse, until the manual asks. Purge first. Run the calc programme when that model says it is due.
