1000W inverter for campervan

Updated: October 2026

You are about to run a 230 V fridge, a laptop charger or a small hob from a 12 V leisure battery, and you want to know what a 1000W inverter for campervan use will hold before the battery or the hook-up becomes the problem. This page stays on that vehicle job. It does not size the DC cable and it does not rank the whole UK market. Prices are the amazon.co.uk figures stored on 19 October 2026. The Products Compared editorial team did not lab-test these units. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. What 1000 W covers in a van

Van reviews in this set describe a compressor fridge, chargers and, at the ceiling, a hob or an air fryer. A 1000 W continuous claim, with 2000 W peak beside it, is a short start-up, not a second hour at 2000 W. If the appliance plate is above 1000 W as its normal draw, this class is already too small. Renogy reviews mention a fridge and, in one report, a 1000 W induction hob. The socket filter is the 1000W inverter buying guide.

How fast the battery falls

A 100 Ah leisure battery is not 100 Ah you can spend. If you treat about half of a lead-acid leisure battery as usable, that is a rule of thumb, about 50 Ah. At about 93 A, a full 1000 W load is roughly half an hour. Lithium can use more of its nameplate, and the current is still near 90 A. Idle current spends the same battery while you think the inverter is idle. Renogy’s UK page states 1 A static, and a Novopal review puts standby near 2 A. Eight hours at 1–2 A is about 8–16 Ah, which is why you switch the inverter fully off overnight.

Hook-up and the inverter

The campsite lead and the inverter are two sources. They must not feed the same sockets at once, and you must not plug the inverter into the hook-up inlet. Out and About Live warns against connecting an inverter output into the motorhome mains. Renogy’s 50 ms grid-priority claim is not that changeover. Once 230 V is part of the caravan or motorhome, the IET’s notes on BS 7671 section 721 say a 30 mA RCD should break all live conductors, that each inlet sits on its RCD, and that accessible metal is bonded. A socket on the inverter case, used alone, is not the same as feeding the van’s own sockets.

Which of these listings fit a 12 V van

The rows van reviews in this set actually mention are Renogy and both Novopal units. Renogy at £113.99 is 12 V to 230 V pure sine. The Novopal PS1000 at £113.19 and the LCD model at £159.99 are 12 V to 240 V with two UK sockets in the listing text. Giandel at £145.99 has one AC outlet rather than the words UK sockets. Jectse at £37.37 is 24 V to 220 V, modified sine. SUDOKEJI at £55.99 is unresolved between 120 V and 240 V. Cantonape at £64.99 is modified sine. If the AC has to join the van’s wiring, stop and use a competent person.

Common questions

Will 1000 W run a compressor fridge?
Often yes for the running load, if the plate sits under 1000 W and the start-up stays inside what the inverter will surge. One Novopal review describes multi-year use on a 230 V compressor fridge in a camper. That is one report, not a test of your model. A 2000 W peak is the short start, not permission for a kettle at the same time. If the fridge and a kettle would overlap, this class is too small.
How long will a leisure battery last?
At a full 1000 W, not long. About 83 A before losses, or about 93 A if you assume 90% efficiency, is roughly half an hour from about 50 Ah of usable lead-acid capacity. That half-capacity figure is a rule of thumb. A small charger lasts longer because battery current falls with the load. The Club’s rule of thumb is about 20 A from 12 V for each 1 A at 230 V. Lithium changes how much of the nameplate you can use. It does not shrink the current.
Can I leave the inverter on overnight?
You can, and you will spend the idle current. Renogy’s UK page states 1 A static, a review discusses about 1 A with no load, and a Novopal review puts standby near 2 A. Across eight hours that is about 8–16 Ah before any appliance runs. Switch the unit fully off when you are not using 230 V. One MINGHAOXIN review warns that leaving it on at night drains the battery, without a measured idle figure.
Do I need an RCD if I only use the socket on the inverter?
If the only 230 V outlet is the socket on the case, and you have not wired it into the van, you are not yet building the installation the IET describes. You still treat the output as mains and follow the manual. Once the inverter feeds the vehicle’s sockets, the sourced line is a 30 mA RCD that opens all live conductors, with each inlet on its RCD. The case socket does not cancel that duty.
Is a 24 V lorry inverter the same install?
No. Jectse in this set is 24 V to 220 V, modified sine, at £37.37. A campervan leisure battery is almost always a single 12 V bank. Putting a 24 V inverter on that bank is not a cable change. The output is also printed as 220 V, not about 230 V. Leave it for a vehicle that already runs at 24 V.
