Makita rotary hammer buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have five Makita rotary hammers open on amazon.co.uk. A 12 V kit, a 110 V 26 mm hammer, an 18 V kit with extraction, a HEPA model and an SDS-Max can all sit in the same results. This Makita rotary hammer buying guide is the order to use before you add one ASIN: the supply you can actually run, then the shank, then whether hammer-only is written down, then what the included line lists. Shelf prices from 21 October 2026 are on the [Makita rotary hammer comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/makita-rotary-hammer). Start with the socket or the battery you already have

A house with only a 13 A socket can run two of these five listings, and both of them are battery kits. The HR166DSMJ is the 12 V CXT kit at £204.95, with two 4.0 Ah batteries, a charger and a Makpac. The DHR242RTJW is the 18 V LXT kit at £549.49, with two 5.0 Ah batteries, a charger, a DX06 extractor and a Makpac. One United Kingdom review says the 12 V charger arrived with a two-pin European plug. The HR2630/1 at £158.50 and the HR4013C/1 at £730.00 are titled 110 V. A United Kingdom review says the HR2630/1 plug is a site-transformer plug and will not fit a normal UK socket. The HR2663 voltage cell says 120 V and the manufacturer line says Makita Canada. How those supplies differ is on the Makita 110V rotary hammer page.

Match the shank to the holes

SDS-Plus and SDS-Max do not share a bit. The HR2630/1 names SDS-Plus and puts 26 mm in the title. The DHR242RTJW names SDS-Plus, and a bullet states 24 mm in concrete. The HR2663 names SDS-Plus and does not print a concrete diameter. The HR4013C/1 is the only SDS-Max, with a 40 mm concrete bullet and a 105 mm TCT core. Bits of about 10 mm will not lock in the Max chuck. The 12 V chuck cell says 16 mm, and the listing does not print SDS-Plus, a joule figure, or a concrete capacity. Makita UK's HR166D page describes 1.1 J and 16 mm in concrete, with two modes and no hammer-only setting. That is the manufacturer page, not a figure the amazon listing printed.

Read the mode line before you plan to chisel

Only the HR2630/1 names hammering only. Its bullets list rotation only, rotation with hammering, and hammering only. That mode is useless in a house that cannot power the plug. The HR166DSMJ bullets do not name a hammer-only mode. The DHR242RTJW says three modes and does not name them. The HR4013C/1 says two modes and does not name them. The HR2663 bullets do not name a chisel mode. If the listing does not say hammering only, you are guessing at the dial.

Price the box, not the badge

None of the five included lines lists drill bits. The HR2630/1 includes a carry case, a depth stop and a side handle, and several United Kingdom reviews say an accessory kit was still missing. The HR166DSMJ includes two 4.0 Ah batteries, a charger and a Makpac. The DHR242RTJW includes two 5.0 Ah batteries, the DX06 and a Makpac. Only the DHR242 bullets print joules, at 2.0 J. The HR2663 prints 2 ft-lb. Do not copy 2.4 J from the Makita UK HR2631F family page onto the HR2630/1, or 8.0 J from the 240 V HR4013C page onto this 110 V amazon row. The voltage cell says 127 V beside the 110 V HR2630/1, and 100 V beside the 110 V HR4013C/1.

Common questions

Which of these five can I run from a 13 A socket at home?
The two battery kits. The HR166DSMJ at £204.95 includes two 4.0 Ah batteries and a charger, and the DHR242RTJW at £549.49 includes two 5.0 Ah batteries and a charger. One United Kingdom review says the 12 V charger arrived with a two-pin European plug. The HR2630/1 and the HR4013C/1 are titled 110 V, and the HR2663 cell says 120 V.
Does the HR166DSMJ have a chisel-only mode?
The amazon bullets do not name one. They list variable speed, constant speed, a depth gauge, reverse and an electric brake. Makita UK's HR166D family page describes two modes and no hammer-only setting, at 1.1 J and 16 mm in concrete. That joule figure is the manufacturer page, not a number printed on the amazon row. The only listing here that names hammering only is the 110 V HR2630/1.
Are drill bits in any of these boxes?
No included line in this set lists a drill bit. The HR2630/1 lists a case, a depth stop and a side handle. The two battery kits list batteries, a charger and a Makpac, and the 18 V kit also lists a DX06. The HR4013C/1 lists a carry case and bit grease. The HR2663 lists a HEPA extractor and a toolbox. You still buy a shank that matches the chuck.
When is the HR4013C/1 the one to buy?
Buy it when you already have a 110 V site supply and you need the SDS-Max work the bullets name: 40 mm in concrete and a 105 mm TCT core. It is too much when your bits are SDS-Plus, when the hole is a 10 mm anchor, or when you only have a 13 A socket. The amazon listing does not print joules.
Why does the HR2663 look like a mid-price UK tool?
The shelf price is £329.53 and the title is an SDS-Plus hammer with a HEPA extractor, which reads like a sensible corded step. The voltage cell says 120 V and the manufacturer line says Makita Canada. The star line is 5.0 from four ratings, and the only written review in the file is from Mexico. Bullets cite OSHA, which is not a UK dust rule.
