How to fit a weather vane

Updated: October 2026

The vane is on the bench, or you are about to drill a shed, and the silhouette will only show a direction if the pole is vertical, the letters stay still and the topper can turn. This is how to fit a weather vane on a stake, a fence or a shed wall, and where that job stops at a house roof. It is not a ranking. The [weathercock comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/weathercock) is the table of the ten amazon.co.uk listings. Peter F. used Coopers of Stortford's fitting PDF, Black Fox Metalcraft's gable notes, the Met Office and the British Geological Survey, plus the gaps in these listings, on 16 October 2026. There was no lab test.

What the vane is supposed to show

The Met Office reports wind direction as the direction the wind is blowing from, relative to true north. A traditional vane points into that wind, so the head or the arrow faces the direction the wind is coming from, not the direction it is going. If the cockerel faces west, the wind is coming from the west and travelling east. The letter arms are the fixed map. The silhouette is the moving pointer. If the arms spin with the bird, you no longer have a reading, only a mobile. It spins and it sits still are both failures when you wanted a letter. The SUPERDANT cat bullets say the arms must be aligned with geographic directions. Which building can take the pole is on weather vane for a shed.

Parts and a vertical fixing

Empty the box on the ground before you climb. Coopers tell you to assemble on the ground and not to lean out from a ladder. Check you have a vertical rod, a topper that can sit on it, letter arms, and whatever stake or screws the listing actually named. Jetcloud's assembly field says instructions are not provided. Domigard's assembly field says wind chimes, while the title describes an owl vane. If the diagram is missing, or the parts do not match the picture, stop and compare them with the listing before you drill. A stake goes into soil, a bed or a planter, and it has to be plumb, or the heavy side sits down and the bird rests on one letter. A screw fixing on a shed wall has to be vertical in the same way. Use the holes you were sent.

Set north and lock the arms

Fit the letter arms so they read clockwise as N, E, S, W, which is the order in the Coopers PDF: north-south first, then east-west. The north arm is the one you set. A phone compass reads magnetic north. The British Geological Survey explains that magnetic north is not true north everywhere in Britain, and the gap depends on where you stand. For a garden ornament the difference is usually smaller than a letter arm you have already bent. That is a rule of thumb. Point the north arm, lock the arms, and leave the topper free to rotate. Put the vane where the wind can reach it, often the top of a post rather than under the eaves. If you want the Met Office's true north, correct the phone, then lock the arms either way.

Grease, the locking screw, and the ladder

A light grease on the bearing, where the topper sits on the rod, is the step Coopers and the British Ironwork Centre both describe. It is not a promise that a vane UK buyers already called dead will start. One Jetcloud review said grease on the pole helped. A packed bearing can stick as surely as a dry one. The locking screw, on vanes that have one, should be tight enough that the topper stays on and loose enough that it can still turn. A tiled ridge or a listed building is where a roofer or the council comes before another screw. If the vane is fitted and still will not turn, the checks are on weather vane not turning. Common questions

Does the arrow point where the wind is going?
It points into the wind, which is where the wind is coming from. The Met Office defines direction that way, relative to true north. If the head faces north, the wind is coming from the north. The letter under the head should be N once you have locked the arms. A vane that only spins is not showing that direction.
In what order do you fit the letter arms?
Coopers' PDF fits north-south first, then east-west, and the letters should read clockwise: N, E, S, W. Interlock them so they cannot rotate with the topper. The SUPERDANT cat bullets say the same job in different words: align the arms with geographic directions. If your pack has no diagram, use that clockwise order and stop if the arms will not lock.
Should you use compass north or true north?
A phone compass is magnetic north. The British Geological Survey points out that this is not true north everywhere. The Met Office uses true north for its wind reports. For a garden vane the gap is usually smaller than a bent arm, which is a rule of thumb. Correct the phone if you want a closer match to a forecast, then lock the north arm either way.
What if the pack has no diagram?
Several of these listings are thin on paper. Jetcloud says instructions are not provided. Domigard's assembly text says wind chimes. Follow a diagram if one is in the box. If it is not, use a vertical rod, clockwise letters, a locked north arm and a free topper, and compare the parts with the photo before you drill. If parts are missing or will not meet, contact the seller rather than inventing a joint.
When do you stop and not climb?
Stop when the work is a tiled house ridge, a height you do not already work at, or a ladder you would have to lean from. Coopers say not to lean from a ladder, and Black Fox send ridge work to a roofer because tiles come off. A listed house is a consent question before it is a screw question. A stake in a bed or screws into a sound shed wall are the jobs these packs are written for.
