Weather vane buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to order a vane for a shed, a fence or a garden bed, and the title already says stainless, rooster and roof. Those three words are often the listing talking, not the specification table, the mount or the UK reviews. This weather vane buying guide is the order of decisions before you use the ten-row table. The [weathercock comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/weathercock) holds the amazon.co.uk listings we kept, from about £12.99 to about £19.99 on 16 October 2026. Peter F. used those listings and UK maker size notes, and did not run a lab test.

Mount before motif

Start with where the pole will stand. A garden stake pushes into soil, a flowerbed or a planter, and it has to sit vertical or the heavy side of the sheet hangs down. The Jetcloud title names a stake. The SUPERDANT lighthouse, the cat vane and the donkey head lead with stakes in the bullets. A screw bracket is a different job. Autrucker, both Clyfanesy colours, the Domigard owl and the Yocdunm train lean on screws or a bracket for a wall, a fence or a shed. Domigard claims a roof bracket and a stake in the same listing. A house ridge through tiles is a third job. None of these extracts itemise a ridge fixing that lifts tiles. The building itself is on weather vane for a shed.

Size against a shed or a house

UK makers separate a small vane for a shed from a full-size vane for a house, and they do not share one measurement. Weathervanes Direct puts a small size, about 430 mm between the compass points, on sheds and single-storey garages, and a full size, about 650 mm between the points, on a house. Black Country Metalworks talks about arrow projection: about 29 cm for a miniature on sheds and fences. Those figures belong to their iron, not to an Amazon box. Set the Jetcloud height of 30 cm beside that and keep the words apart. Thirty centimetres is a stated height, not a compass span and not an arrow projection. The lighthouse prints 26.5 by 35.8 cm. The cat vane prints 35.8 by 26.9 cm in the bullet and 35.8 by 35.8 cm in the table.

What stainless is worth

Read the material table before the bullet that says stainless. Jetcloud's table says stainless steel and the bullets claim a rust-resistant coating, and UK reviews in that file say it rusted. Autrucker's bullets also claim stainless steel, and UK reviews report rust within months. Qarmijaer does not make the stainless claim. The table says painted metal, and both UK texts are still harsh: one compares the sheet to tin foil. The SUPERDANT lighthouse and the Domigard owl say iron. Yocdunm says iron and then claims an anti-ultraviolet stainless steel paint, which is a coating sentence, not a stainless sheet. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 9 includes the description in satisfactory quality, so a stainless line the table or the UK reviews already contradict is part of what you are buying.

How to read the stars in this set

A star line is a count of ratings, not a turning trial. Jetcloud's 4.0 from 114, with 33 UK texts, is the largest UK sample, and those texts disagree: some say it works after grease, and some say it ignores a brisk wind. The lighthouse's 4.5 from 82, with 13 UK texts, is kinder and mostly about the look. The Clyfanesy owl colour and the rooster colour share model FitltukD6104 and the same 3.8 from 8. Adding eight and eight counts the same people twice. Who each listing is for is on best weather vane UK. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

What should you check before the motif?
Check the mount, then the size, then whether the material table agrees with the title. A stake, a screw bracket and a house ridge are different fixings, and a rooster printed on the wrong one will not become a direction reading. In this set the stake listings and the screw listings are both present, and a tiled ridge is not itemised.
Is a £15 vane the same job as a £240 cockerel?
No. The amazon.co.uk extracts kept here run from about £12.99 to about £19.99. Black Fox Metalcraft's cockerel page showed from £240 on 16 October 2026, with a fixing you choose. That is a different object, usually with a proper bracket for a shed or a roof. A £15 sheet can still dress a bed or a coop. It is not a substitute when you want a house ridge and a maker's installation notes.
Does stainless steel in the title mean the table says stainless?
Only if the material cell says it as well. Jetcloud's table does say stainless steel, and UK reviews still report rust. Autrucker's bullets say stainless and the reviews dispute it. The lighthouse and the Domigard owl say iron. Yocdunm's stainless wording is a paint claim on iron. Read the cell, then the UK texts for that ASIN, before you treat the title as the metal.
Why must the two Clyfanesy ASINs not be added together?
They are different ASINs and different prices, about £15.99 and about £16.99, with different stated weights. The model number is FitltukD6104 on both, and the 3.8 from 8 is one pool. The same six UK texts appear on the owl colour and the rooster colour. One of those texts describes an owl. Adding the counts would invent a sample of 16 from eight ratings.
When is 5.0 from 3 ratings not evidence?
When the texts are not about the product, or are not from UK buyers of it. The SUPERDANT donkey shows 5.0 from 3, and the only review text is in Spanish and describes a tree of life. That line is not praise for this donkey head. The Yocdunm train is the clearer case still: the extract has no review line at all, so there is no star average to interpret.
