Rubble chute from a window

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a first-floor window or a roof slope full of plaster, timber and brick. A rubble chute from a window only works if the skip may stand where the chute lands, and if the opening can carry the chute. The listings are on the [rubble slide comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/rubble-slide). The hang is [how to fit a rubble chute](/hub/diy-supplies/rubble-slide/sub/rubble-slide-how-to-fit). The [buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/rubble-slide/sub/rubble-slide-buying-guide) is how you reject a title that does not state one length. Peter F. used the GOV.UK skip pages and HSE roof sheets on 22 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Where the skip may stand

In England and Wales, GOV.UK says a skip on a public road needs a licence, including a skip bag, and you cannot put a skip on the pavement. A skip entirely on private land does not need that licence. Missing required lights or markings can mean a fine of up to £1,000. If the chute would land only on the footway, you do not have a legal landing yet. Use a drive where the whole container is on private land, or a licensed road position the chute can enter. Scotland requires a permit on a public road and not when the skip is entirely on private land. Northern Ireland is a separate roads authority. A chute does not change the rule. Alide Hire's plastic section at £12.26 including VAT per week, before delivery, tells you nothing about where the skip may stand. A householder working alone is not an employer under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, and the skip rules still apply.

Window fixing

A legal skip on the drive is useless if the frame cannot carry the chute. For plastic sections, SafeSite and PSM describe a spreader bar so the load is not left on the reveal alone, and the parapet has to take the strain if that is the support. The window has to be a designed support, not a convenient hole. A light textile tube is strapped to a solid anchor, kept as vertical as the opening allows, and finished in the container. That is not permission to strap 8.5 kg plastic sections to a uPVC corner. If the listing will not state one length, you cannot tell whether the tube reaches the skip you are allowed to use. The bottom has to enter the skip, and the base is fenced before the first load.

What leaves the site

DIY waste from a house can include rubble, timber and bricks. GOV.UK says that if a business takes that waste, the carrier has to be on the upper-tier register. Construction and demolition waste is an upper-tier example on the Environment Agency's public-register explanation. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own checks. A tradesperson's waste is business waste, not a householder's boot load. A chute is not the check. Search the register for the nation before the skip leaves, and do not treat a logo on the lorry as the register.

What must not go down the chute

Asbestos cement sheets do not go down the chute. HSE HSG33 says they are lowered whole. CIS81 says use a chute to the skip rather than throwing from the loft or the scaffold. That is the method for ordinary waste, not a test of these listings, and a skip below does not make a throw acceptable. A blocked tube is competent-person work after the chute is secured. Follow the skip company's own conditions for batteries, fridges and paint. This page does not turn one council's list into a UK-wide ban.

Common questions

Does a skip on the drive need a licence?
In England and Wales, GOV.UK says no licence is required when the skip is entirely on private land. A drive counts when the whole container is on that land. The moment any part sits on the road, you are in licence territory, and the hire company usually applies. Scotland's own page draws the same private-land line for a public road. Northern Ireland needs its own authority's rule.
Can the skip sit on the pavement because that is where the window is?
No. The England and Wales page says you cannot put a skip on the pavement. The window does not create an exception. If the chute cannot reach a skip on the drive or a licensed position in the road, you do not yet have a landing. Aiming the tube at the footway is the mistake this page is for.
Who may take the rubble away?
A private collector taking construction or DIY rubble has to be an upper-tier carrier. Use the public register for the nation. A tradesperson removing waste from your house is moving business waste. The chute, the amazon listing and the skip hire do not perform that check for you.
How is a chute fixed at a window?
Plastic sections in the SafeSite and PSM guides use a spreader bar so the opening is not the only support, and the parapet has to be able to take the strain. A light tube is strapped to a solid anchor and kept nearly vertical, which is the flexible-maker method, not the plastic method. A canvas title that also describes a picnic blanket is not a fixing specification.
Can I throw tiles off the roof if the skip is underneath?
No. CIS81 tells you to use a chute into the skip rather than throw from the roof or the loft. HSG33 calls a rubble chute the safest option it names for ordinary roof waste, compared with throwing. The skip being below does not make the throw acceptable, and asbestos cement sheets are lowered whole rather than sent down the tube.
What must not go down the chute into a household skip?
Asbestos cement sheets must not. They are lowered whole. Beyond that, follow the skip company's conditions and the register check. This page does not copy one council's list of batteries, tyres, fridges or paint into a UK-wide ban. A chute does not change what that skip is licensed to hold.
Does Scotland use the England skip page?
No. Scotland has its own GOV.UK page for a skip licence. A public road needs a permit, and a skip entirely on private land does not. Do not quote an English council fee as the Scottish price. Northern Ireland is a further authority. Use the page for the nation where the skip will stand.
