Plastic or flexible rubble chute

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are stood between the red tubes at a scaffold merchant and a foldable chute in a parcel. A plastic or flexible rubble chute is not one product in two fabrics. The six listings are on the [rubble slide comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/rubble-slide). The checklist is the [buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/rubble-slide/sub/rubble-slide-buying-guide), and the [best rubble chute](/hub/diy-supplies/rubble-slide/sub/rubble-slide-best) page names which row agrees with itself. Peter F. set the trade prices below against the saved listings on 22 October 2026 and did not weigh a section. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two different objects

A common 20 inch plastic section is about 500 mm at the top and 400 mm at the bottom, with about 1,000 mm of working drop. Scaffolding Direct lists it at £55.38 including VAT and 8.5 kg, with chains, and the hopper is separate. ULS Lifting lists a similar section at £55.78 including VAT. Kingfisher Direct states an extra frame every 10 m on its own system. A flexible textile section is a different lift. Stortslurf's 50 cm chute is 3 m nominal, about 2.70 m effective, 2.5 kg, at £32.76 including VAT. The maker says one section per storey. That tube is not one of the six amazon rows. Plastic wants chains or, on the larger PSM diameters, wire ropes, plus a frame or a spreader. A textile tube wants a funnel and a strap to a solid anchor. You do not strap an 8.5 kg plastic stack to a uPVC corner because a 2.5 kg tube was sold as a one-person job.

When plastic

Choose plastic when the job is multi-storey, repeated, and the scaffold can take a frame. Bricks, tiles and timber off several lifts will punish a parcel tube. The hopper is part of the kit, not a colour you add later. Wellers Hire lists a 20 inch main section at £8.50 excluding VAT per week, with a hopper and a scaffold frame as further lines, and a maximum of 10 main sections plus a hopper from one frame.

When a flexible tube

Choose a flexible tube when the drop is about one storey, the listing names the waste, and you can strap the top to a solid anchor. Stortslurf's worked example is about 2.70 m effective from a 3 m piece, landing in the container. If the opening cannot keep the tube nearly vertical, that maker's own limit says this is the wrong shape. Inside this set, ANSERWA B0H36X1RSJ is the row that behaves like that idea: about £103.00, 5 m in the title, the model and the size line, bricks, wood, plaster and insulation named, and a funnel and straps included. The material is unnamed and there is no review line, so it is not a tested twin of the £32.76 trade tube. A 5 m claim is longer than one Stortslurf storey. The other five are canvas sheets or a title with almost no bullets. Do not call an open sheet, a cargo line or a picnic-blanket page a flexible tube.

Hire beside both

A weekly section price is not the job cost. Wellers at £8.50 excluding VAT and Alide at £12.26 including VAT are each a main section for a week, before delivery, and Wellers prices the hopper and frame separately. Stortslurf's hire-versus-buy page is that seller's case, with other firms' rates as stated there on 15 September 2026. Check the hire firm before you treat a rival's number as current. If the scaffold is standing and the waste will keep coming, hire or buy plastic. If the job is a short drop from a house window into a skip on the drive, a light tube that names the waste is the closer match. Canvas titles that disagree with themselves are not the bargain version of that tube.

Common questions

When is plastic the right tool?
Plastic sections are the right tool for repetitive waste on a scaffold, with a hopper and a frame, or the hire equivalent. A 20 inch section is about 8.5 kg and about 1 m of working drop at the merchants cited above. Wellers limits one frame to 10 main sections plus a hopper. A strap-up tube is the wrong substitute for that run.
When is a 3 m textile tube enough?
It is enough for about one storey when you accept Stortslurf's own limits: about 2.70 m effective, a near-vertical hang, a funnel, a solid anchor, and the maker's one-section-per-storey line. It is not enough for a multi-lift scaffold, and it is not described by the canvas listings in this amazon set.
Is a canvas sheet the same as a flexible tube?
No. A flexible tube in the trade example is a closed 50 cm chute at 2.5 kg with a stated overlap. A canvas sheet with grommets is open at the sides. Five of the six kept amazon listings are that sheet, or a title that does not specify the form. Only B0H36X1RSJ names a funnel, straps and building waste together.
Is a week of hire cheaper than buying?
Sometimes for the chute section alone, and often not once delivery, a hopper and a frame are included. £8.50 excluding VAT or £12.26 including VAT is a section for a week at two firms, not a national price. Stortslurf's claim that buying is cheaper is that seller's comparison. Check the hire note for your postcode before you rely on it.
Can I hang plastic sections the way a textile advert hangs a strap?
No. Plastic sections in these guides use chains or wire ropes, a frame or a spreader bar, and a tie-back interval the manufacturer or the hire guide prints. A textile strap to a solid anchor is a different method for a much lighter tube. Mixing them loads a fixing that was never described for that weight.
What waste needs 22 inch or 30 inch rather than 500 mm?
Waste that will not pass a mouth of about 500 mm at the top of a 20 inch section. AKM lists 22 inch and 30 inch as larger chutes, with that firm's own chain and wire figures. Those figures stay with AKM. They are not a reason to pick a wider canvas title whose bullets disagree on width.
