Manhole lifting keys

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are standing over a cover in a UK drive or patio, and the listing says heavy duty, universal, or ten tons. Manhole lifting keys only work when the end enters the slot you can see. Decide in this order: the tip, then any duty the maker actually prints, then a length you can lift with your legs, then the price. The [manhole hook comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/manhole-hook) holds the twelve amazon.co.uk listings, from about £6.99 to about £21.85. We read those listings and the public UK notes. We did not lift a cover in a lab. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Look at the slot before the title

A keyway is the hole the tool has to fill. Thames Water’s cover booklet, hosted by SEHAUC, says you pick the key that sits fully in that keyway and does not rattle. A T or D tip is a different tool from a J-hook. If you buy from the title, you are guessing which of those the cover uses. A rectangular slot wants a flat lug. A round eye, a light pressed lid, or a recess tray often wants a bent hook of about 10 mm, the size Faithfull prints on FAIMHK200B. An edge with no keyway wants a J-tip, and a long handle does not turn that hook into a locking key. Universal on a size field is a word, not a measurement. Measure the hole before you add a pair to the basket. A round eye against a rectangular lug is the O-end and T-end page.

Duty is a sentence on the tool, not a cover class

BS EN 124 groups rate the cover, from pedestrian A15 at 15 kN up to F900 at 900 kN. JDP’s explainer is about the lid’s test load. It does not rate the hook in your hand. Reading D400 off a driveway cover and searching for a D400 key sends you to the wrong product. A heavy class is a reason to get help, not a size to type into Amazon. Use a duty the maker prints on that exact tool. Faithfull’s page for FAIMHK200B limits it to light-duty covers, recessed trays, and access panels, and it has no max-load cell. The amazon.co.uk file is the same gap. A Wrekin light-duty key listed for pedestrian B125 covers sits outside this set. It does not make a marketplace hook into a B125 tool. HSE’s manual-handling guidance does not give one safe kilogram. The assessment is the task, the load, and you.

Length is about your back

Thames Water’s booklet says a key that is too short makes you stoop, and a key that is too long can stop a leg lift. The keys still have to sit fully in the keyway. A sound tip on a 16 cm bar leaves you bent over a cast lid. A 600 mm bar is useless if the end never enters. Stated lengths here run from about 16 cm to 60 cm. Faithfull’s bent pair is 200 mm. ShiLiuYiDaLe states 30 cm. Veemoon’s line is about 29 cm. PATIKIL sells pointed pairs at 390 mm and 500 mm, and a blunt pair at 600 mm. Wensmy’s title says 44 cm and the dimension line says 160 x 2 x 42 cm, so that row has no single length to trust. A light plastic lid may be fine at 200 mm. On a cast lid, pulling harder is how hooks snap. Prefer a pair, so the cover does not twist onto your fingers.

Price after the tip fits

Entry prices in this capture run from about £6.99 to about £11.99. Mid prices run from about £13.84 to about £19.99. The 600 mm blunt pair is about £21.85. A search snippet for the Faithfull title showed £10.99 against an RRP of £15.53, and Faithfull’s list is £16.31 including VAT, so the shelf moves. Check the figure when you click through. Price is a poor first filter. The lowest pair carries an unsupported tonnage line and no reviews. The highest pair is the longest and has no star line. Paying more does not add a keyway size the listing left out. Once the end matches and you can lift with your legs, the comparison shows who has UK reviews and a named code. A live road, locked water-company plant, or a cover that stays seized is a job for a professional, not a longer hook.

Common questions

Will one pair of manhole lifting keys fit every UK cover?
No pair in this capture prints one keyway size for both a small rectangular window and a round 10 mm eye. A rectangular lug, a bent O-end, and a J-hook catch different features. Match the end to the slot on your lid. A second pair is the honest outcome when the house has a recess tray and a cast chamber. MacBlair’s note says the same thing: one pair does not fit every slot.
Do I match the key to the cover class or to the slot?
Match it to the slot. BS EN 124 classes, from A15 to F900, are test loads for the cover. Faithfull’s own page for FAIMHK200B talks about light-duty covers and trays, which is a duty sentence on that tool, and it still describes the 10 mm O-end you have to fit into the eye. A heavy class is a reason to plan a two-person lift, which HSE leaves as an assessment rather than one kilogram limit.
What is a small keyway versus a large one?
On Southwark drawing LBS-500-16, the small keyway is about 14–16 mm by 9–11 mm and the large one is about 22–25 mm by 9–13 mm. That is one council’s detail, not a national law. Wrekin describes a large BS 7903 profile for its manhole covers and a small profile for BS 5834 surface boxes. If your listing gives no lug in millimetres, those windows are a ruler check on the cover, not a claim you can read off the title.
Is a 30 kg rating on a Faithfull T-end the same product as the bent O-end?
The 30 kg line belongs to Faithfull codes FAIMHK170, FAIMHK320, and FAIMHK520, with a 33 mm by 5 mm end. FAIMHK200B is the bent 200 mm O-end in this comparison, and neither the maker page nor the amazon.co.uk file prints a max load for it. Monument’s 25 kg line is a Screwfix O-end at a different price, about £17.99. Keep each figure on the tool that prints it.
What do I do if the listing says universal or 10 tons?
Read the millimetres and the review file, and leave the slogan. Zephanor’s 10 ton bullet sits next to 80 g and no reviews. One size fits all on MFSKJELF is the size field, not a drawing. A useful listing tells you the tip shape, a length, and, when the maker has tested it, a load with a method. If those lines are missing, the price is not a discount on a measured tool.
Should I buy stainless or zinc plated first?
Buy the tip that enters the slot, then choose the finish for where the keys live. Zinc plate is the usual trade finish on a light-duty pair such as FAIMHK200B. Stainless, on several of the longer hooks here, copes better with a wet toolbox and still bends or misses the hole when the bar is wrong. Nylon gloves in one pack at about £9.99 are not a cut rating. Gloves come after the metal fits.
