Joist hangers for decking

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are framing a deck, the hangers say galvanised or outdoor, and a UK review already describes a ground-level frame that is still standing. Joist hangers for decking are a coating question before they are a star-rating question. A review of a deck is not a service class, and none of the eight amazon.co.uk listings here declares service class 3 or stainless steel. The rows are on the [joist hanger comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/joist-hanger). Updated 23 October 2026 by Peter F. We read the listing words and the UK review notes. We did not leave a hanger out through a winter. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What these listings say about outside

Read the outdoor line as a field. On both BPC mini pages, the standard leg, and the AB Tools 20-pack, the outdoor question is unanswered, even though the AB Tools title includes the word decking. FIXINGS DIRECT’s 50 mm ten-pack also leaves it unanswered. UK reviews still use these hangers on decks, a canopy, a car port, and a log-cabin floor. Those jobs are in the file. They are not a zinc mass. LLB is the only page that prints Z275, 275 g/m², and 20 μm, on 2.0 mm steel with a 30 mm seat, and its highlight names decking. The outdoor question there is still unanswered. The multi-truss listing says full weather and UV resistance. One UK review would not comment on rust. Xingwenhao’s bullet says indoor and outdoor, on a black finish with no zinc mass. Seat width still comes first, on the joist hanger buying guide.

Service class 3 is a declaration, not a colour

Service class is the moisture the steel is expected to live in. Classes 1 and 2 are the internal range, from dry to occasional damp. Class 3 is the wet case: external timber that can be soaked and stay damp. Simpson’s ETA-06/0270 keeps a minimum of Z275 for classes 1 and 2, and it allows stainless grades, hot-dip galvanising, or a coating such as ZM310 for class 3. Cullen’s 2022 guide treats Z275 as the minimum it recommends for service class 2. A page can say decking and still be class 2. TIMCO’s A2 stainless mini, the 47THMS, does declare service class 3 for light duty including decking. It is not in this basket. If you need that declaration, you want it written on the listing, not inferred from the word galvanised. Z275 on the LLB page is a real coating line, and in the ETA language it is still the class 1 and 2 coating. The seat is 30 mm, so a printed coating on the wrong width is still the wrong hanger.

Treated joists need a matching nail

Deck joists are often preservative-treated. The Timber Decking and Cladding Association says copper-based preservatives raise corrosion risk, the nail should match the hanger, and you fix only once the timber is back under about 20 percent moisture. Use Class 4 describes the timber, not the steel. None of these eight pages prints stainless, hot-dip galvanising, or BS 7371-6. A bright screw in a galvanised hanger mixes the metals that note tells you not to mix. If the joists are treated and the joint can stay wet, the hanger and the nail have to be specified together. Once you have the right nail, the hole sequence is on how to fit joist hangers.

Black and powder coat are not that upgrade

A black hanger looks outdoor because the bullet says corrosion-resistant. Xingwenhao’s four-pack is that case. The finish is black, the colour field reads Schwarz, and there is no zinc mass. One UK review measured about 50 mm inside against a 46 mm bullet and said a 2x4 rocked because there were no side holes. Fence duty in a review is not service class 3. Powder coat is the same limit. Simpson sells a black powder coat on some heavy hangers as an appearance finish, not as a substitute for the class 3 coating list. Painting a polished mini at home does not create a declared coating. For a deck that stays wet, ask the manufacturer which coating and which nail they rate for service class 3, or ask a designer.

Common questions

Can I use these galvanised hangers on a deck?
You can read the pages. You cannot take galvanised as a yes for a wet deck. Most of these listings leave the outdoor question unanswered. UK reviews do describe ground-level frames. Service class 3 is not declared on any of the eight. A covered light frame is a different exposure from a joint that stays damp under the boards.
What is service class 3 in plain words?
It is the class for metalwork that gets wet and can stay wet. Classes 1 and 2 cover dry and occasionally damp interiors. Z275 is the minimum several UK maker documents use for classes 1 and 2. Class 3, in those documents, moves to stainless steel, hot-dip galvanising, or a heavier specified coating, with nails to match.
Does a deck review make the hanger outdoor-rated?
No. A review can be true about last summer’s deck and still say nothing about coating weight. The BPC and FIXINGS DIRECT minis have those reviews and still do not print a zinc mass or a service class. One multi-truss reviewer chose thicker metal for the weather and would not comment on rust.
Is black or powder coat enough?
Not as the upgrade these notes describe. The type-B hanger is black and says outdoor, with no zinc mass. Powder coat on a trade hanger is often an appearance finish. Painting a polished mini at home does not declare service class 3.
What about treated deck joists?
Copper-based preservative makes corrosion more likely. The TDCA says to match the nail metal to the hanger and to wait until the timber is under about 20 percent moisture. Use Class 4 describes the timber, not the steel. These packs do not include nails, so the matching fastener is a second purchase.
Is there a stainless hanger in this comparison?
No. None of the eight says stainless, A2, or A4, and none prints service class 3. The nail has to match the hanger anyway: a galvanised hanger wants a galvanised or sherardised nail of the named diameter, not a bright screw. TIMCO’s A2 mini is an example that does declare class 3. It is not one of these ASINs.
