Our top picks

On this page

Best means a seat that matches the timber

A high star line on the wrong width is a different product. Regularised carcassing near 45 mm wants a 47 mm seat. Sawn timber near 50 mm wants a 50 mm seat. A mini here is for timber up to about 100 mm. The standard leg is the 150 to 250 mm strap. None of the boxes includes nails. The score uses stars, the number of ratings, whether the page prints one width, a depth band, and a thickness, and what UK reviews report. It does not add points for a kilonewton with no method. The BPC 10-piece is highest, at 84. The 50-piece BPC mini is close, at 82, and it is not the top pick, because one UK review received about half the box. The £8.99 ten-pack scores 75, on the largest sample, 542 ratings. The checks are on the joist hanger buying guide.

Top pick, the BPC 47 mm mini 10-piece

BPC Fixings MINI/47/10PK, B0BN1PRZ6P, is £9.70 for ten galvanised mini hangers with a 47 mm seat. The bullet limits the timber to 100 mm and names ceiling hatches. Across 145 amazon.co.uk ratings the line is 4.6. UK reviews describe decks, joists on wall plates, a cabin roof, and a solar canopy. One review says 47 mm was exact. That is why it is the top pick for a hatch or a shallow regularised joist, beside a 50 mm hanger that would leave a gap. The bullet says 0.8 mm and the item-depth field says 0.9 mm. Nails are not in the box. Two UK reviews were short, 8 of 10 and a single bracket, and the edges want gloves. Skip it for a 150 to 250 mm joist, for sawn 50 mm timber, or for a wet joint that needs service class 3. The nail sequence is on how to fit joist hangers.

Best value, the 50 mm ten-pack at £8.99

FIXINGS DIRECT’s 10-piece, B075S414XL, is £8.99, titled 50 mm or 2 inch, timber to timber. The star line is 4.5 from 542 ratings. UK reviews describe deck joists, a log-cabin floor, garage joists, and a mezzanine on 4x2 beams. The title and the count fields both say 10. For sawn timber that is about 50 mm, and for a light job, that price and that sample are the best value here. Thickness, zinc mass, and a depth band are not printed. The finish field says polished. One UK review says the holes were small, and another says the hangers bend easily and will not hold a decent weight. Skip it when the timber is near 45 mm. Xingwenhao’s type-B four-pack is also £8.99, but it is four black U connectors, not a mini, so it does not take this place.

The dearer packs are for a different job

Rows above £16 answer a different measurement. AB Tools at £16.91 is a 47 mm 20-pack with two ratings and no review text. LLB at £19.99 is 2.0 mm Z275 with a 30 mm seat and 16.97 kN printed as 1,730 kg with no method. Use it when you measured 30 mm, not to beat a 47 mm mini. The BPC standard leg at £41.95 is the 150 to 250 mm row, and one box arrived as 49. The multi-truss listing is £50.99 in 2 mm, titled as 20 pieces, with a unit count of 5, so there is no honest unit price. The size bullet names 75 mm depth, and the page does not declare a service class. None of these picks includes nails, and none is a loft-floor design.

Common questions

Which listing is the top pick, and for whom?
The top pick is BPC Fixings MINI/47/10PK, B0BN1PRZ6P, at £9.70, 4.6 from 145 ratings. It is for a 47 mm seat on regularised timber no deeper than 100 mm, including a ceiling hatch, when you will buy the nails and count the ten pieces. It has the highest score in this set. It is not the pick for a 150 mm joist.
Which listing is the best value, and who should skip it?
The best value is the FIXINGS DIRECT 50 mm ten-pack, B075S414XL, at £8.99, 4.5 from 542 ratings. Skip it if the timber measures near 45 mm, because the seat is 50 mm and the page prints no thickness. Also skip it if a note that the steel bends and will not hold a decent weight describes your load. The award is the price and the sample, not a complete specification.
Why not the 2 mm hanger at £50.99?
It is thicker, and it names 3.75 mm twist nails or 12 mm bolts. The title says 20 pieces and the unit count says 5, so you cannot price it per hanger. The depth figure is 75 mm, not a 150 to 250 mm leg, and there is no service class behind the weather line. With 31 ratings it is a different joint, not a better default.
Why not the 50-piece BPC mini?
MINI/47/TRADE is the same 47 mm mini idea at £28.69, 4.6 from 132, with a 0.9 mm bullet. One UK review received about half the box. Until you count 50, the lower price per piece is a title, not a delivery. The 10-piece is the top pick because a review confirmed the width and a short box is easier to see.
Is 4.5 from 542 better evidence than 4.6 from 145?
It is better evidence that buyers were broadly satisfied with the 50 mm ten-pack, and worse evidence of what it is made of, because thickness and coating weight are blank. The 4.6 from 145 sits on a page that prints a 47 mm seat, a 100 mm limit, and a maker code. Sample size and specification are different questions.
Does a top pick include nails, or a loft floor?
No nails. The BPC 10-piece includes the hangers only, and the maker’s sheet names 30 x 3.75 mm square-twist nails as a separate pack. A habitable loft floor is Building Regulations work under Approved Document A in England. The right width does not turn a ceiling joist into one. Take a loft, a beam, a stair, or a roof load to an engineer or Building Control.
