Insulation panels buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You typed insulation panels and amazon.co.uk returned an £80.89 pack of polystyrene sheets next to a £10.98 foil roll, foam wedges, and a car mat that weighs 13.9 kg. Those are not substitutes. This buying guide sorts the twelve listings in our [insulation panels comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/insulation-panels) by the job they can do, so you can leave with one family in mind and ignore the rest. Peter F. read the amazon.co.uk listings and the United Kingdom reviews captured for this set on 21 October 2026. We did not run a laboratory test. Five products share one search phrase

The phrase insulation panels covers a rigid expanded-polystyrene board, a metallised reflector, a thin self-adhesive sheet, an acoustic tile and a heavy butyl mat. Each fails differently, so a star sort is a poor way to shop. A 4.8 from ten ratings on a 5 mm roll can outrank a board with 345 reviews. The only rigid board in this capture is £80.89. Foil, tiles and the mat sit below £40. Merchant PIR boards are not in the basket. A shed wall you will line with 25 mm sheet is a board job. A radiator on a cold outside wall is a foil job. Echo in a room you own is a tile job. A ringing car panel is a butyl job only if the sheet is heavy. AKOLAFE’s title says sound deadening while the pack weighs about 510 g.

When 25 mm is only a lining

If the work is a new wall, roof or floor, you are no longer choosing among these twelve ASINs. In England, Approved Document L Volume 1 (2021 edition with 2023 amendments), Table 4.2, limits new fabric in existing dwellings to a roof U-value of 0.15 and a wall or floor of 0.18 W/(m²·K). Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use their own documents. None of the twelve files contains a Euroclass. The only board is Triplast: 24 sheets of 1200 × 600 × 25 mm, titled EPS 70, country of origin United Kingdom, about 17.28 m². Reviews use the sheets in outbuildings and call the cut messy and the sheets fragile. Adhesive is not in the box. The title says BBA certified, and the captured listing has no certificate number. EPS 70 usually means at least 70 kPa at 10% deformation on UK floor boards. That is the grade name, not a certificate for this pack.

Foil, foam tiles, and a heavy mat

Radiator reflector foil belongs on an uninsulated external wall, the condition the Energy Saving Trust states. Kitchen foil is the wrong product. The 95% line on JMIATRY is the seller’s sentence, and Szfanyangxuan’s lambda is a seller line with no test report in the file. The radiator reflector foil page stays on that case. Acoustic tiles change reflections. They do not stop a neighbour. Saiqiang’s glue is a repeated complaint, and the 48-piece pack says sticker while the bullets include no adhesive. The acoustic foam versus thermal panels page keeps echo and heat apart. temproad is nine butyl sheets at 13.9 kg. That mass is why it is not the AKOLAFE pad at about 510 g. BXI has no review line, and the title size fights the specification block. Do not let a missing star line look like a perfect score.

What to check before you rank them

Check thickness against the gap. One Fabian Clarke review says the bubbles are nearer 2 mm than the stated 4 mm, and another buyer returned a roll as too thick. Vacuum-packed foam often arrives flat, and one 48-piece review measured about 15 mm against a 1 inch title. Then check the box. Tabs on the 10 m roll ran out for several reviewers. wordmouk’s tape came off after three days in one review. JAMELO’s adhesive can mark paint. temproad’s tools were missing in more than one United Kingdom review. Neighbour noise and sound-deadening wording are where these listings disappoint. Fire bullets name no UK class. If you are still between two families, filter by job rather than by price.

Common questions

Are insulation panels the same as PIR boards?
No. A merchant insulation board is often PIR specified for a roof, wall or floor. This amazon.co.uk set has one 25 mm EPS pack, radiator foil, a thin self-adhesive sheet, acoustic tiles and a butyl car mat. If the drawing asks for PIR, you are in the wrong list.
Is 25 mm EPS enough for a house wall?
Not as a new wall in England. Table 4.2 limits that wall to 0.18 W/(m²·K). Triplast’s listing conductivity starts at 0.038 W/(m·K). At that figure, 25 mm is about 0.66 m²K/W of the sheet alone, not the finished wall. Shed linings are what United Kingdom reviews describe.
Should I buy radiator foil instead of a board?
Only when the radiator is on an uninsulated external wall. The Energy Saving Trust treats internal walls as a weak case. Foil does not replace a board in a new wall, and a board does not sit in the gap behind a radiator bracket.
What should I buy for a van skin?
Separate a light heat sheet from a heavy mat. AKOLAFE is about 510 g, and United Kingdom reviews reject it as sound deadening. Szfanyangxuan is a 5 mm roll with only ten ratings. temproad is 13.9 kg of butyl for panel vibration, and reviewers report missing tools. Bubble foil on a metal skin is a supplement, not a finished lining.
Does fire resistant on a tile mean a UK class?
Not in this set. Saiqiang, JAMELO, the 48-piece pack, temproad, AKOLAFE, and Szfanyangxuan use fire-resistant, fireproof, fire-retardant, or flame-retardant wording. None of the saved listings names a Euroclass. One United Kingdom review of the Saiqiang wedges says they are not fire resistant. Do not read the bullet as a certificate.
