Acoustic foam vs soundproofing

Updated: 23 October 2026

Acoustic foam vs soundproofing is the wrong comparison if you think they are two names for one product. Foam and polyester tiles change reflections inside the room. They do not stop sound crossing a wall, and a heat board does not do their job either. If you are about to buy wedge foam so next door goes quiet, or foil so a bare room stops echoing, this page is the decision. The twelve listings sit in the [insulation panels comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/insulation-panels). Peter F. used those listings, United Kingdom reviews and public UK acoustics notes on 21 October 2026. We did not measure a room. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two problems, one word

Ikoustic’s statement is the one to keep: sound-reducing foam is not soundproofing. It shortens reverberation. It does not isolate. The insulation panels buying guide splits the five families before you rank any of them. Echo is your own voice or a boiler cupboard in a bare room. Sound that crosses a wall needs mass and an airtight separating construction. Resonics notes that thin tiles do little below about 1 kHz, and they block nothing. EQ Acoustics answer a soundproofing question on their own wedge with no. Their UL94 HF1 mark is not in our files. If you can point at a party wall, do not add these tiles.

What the three foam listings can do

Saiqiang is twelve polyurethane wedges at £13.99, 3.9 from 993 reviews, vacuum sealed. Some buyers are happy once the foam expands. Others say the tiles stay thin and the glue fails. The title says soundproof, and reviewers say that word overclaims. It will not take the neighbour away. JAMELO is twelve peel-and-stick polyester squares, about 1.08 m², £21.99, 4.2 from 807 reviews. Some people hear less echo or less noise from a boiler cupboard. Several say the neighbour is unchanged. If you own the wall, JAMELO is the least-bad tile here. The best insulation panels page names that pick only after the neighbour is ruled out. The 48-piece pack is £31.91, 3.4 from 1,167 reviews, with no adhesive despite the sticker title. Tiles arrive crushed. None of the three publishes a lambda.

What a quieter neighbour requires

A quieter neighbour requires a wall that already has mass, and joints that do not leak air. Approved Document E is about separating walls and floors between dwellings. Foam tiles are not how you meet E1. Adding 1 cm of polyester to the face you can see does not change the wall you share. It can change how your own room sounds, which is why a boiler-cupboard review and a neighbour review can both be honest. Open-cell foam is light. Sound travelling through a wall is not waiting to be absorbed by a wedge on your side. A furniture-regulations pass that eFoam cites for their own foam does not transfer to Saiqiang or the 48-piece pack. If the aim is that you cannot hear next door, leave this set. The how to fit insulation panels page covers a vacuum-packed tile. It does not build a party wall.

When you wanted heat instead

If the room is cold, the acoustic tiles are the wrong column. Triplast’s EPS pack is 24 sheets of 25 mm at £80.89. Listing conductivity starts at 0.038 W/(m·K). At that figure, 25 mm is about 0.66 m²K/W of the sheet, a shed lining in the reviews, not a Part L wall and not an echo treatment. You will still hear the room. Fabian Clarke’s radiator foil has no lambda. It is a reflector for an uninsulated external wall behind a radiator. It will not kill echo, and it will not insulate the wall to 0.18 W/(m²·K). Buy JAMELO if you own the wall and you want less echo, and you will test the adhesive. Buy Saiqiang only as a cheap trial if you will replace the glue and wait for the foam to rise. Buy neither if you need the neighbour to stop. Buy the board or the foil only after you have named a heat job.

Common questions

Will acoustic foam stop next door hearing me?
No. Open-cell foam and a 1 cm polyester tile absorb reflections in your room. They do not add the mass or the airtight separation that keeps sound out of the next dwelling. Ikoustic and EQ Acoustics both say foam is not soundproofing.
Will it stop me hearing next door?
No. Several United Kingdom reviews of JAMELO say the neighbour is still as loud, even when echo in the room improved. Thin tiles do little at low frequencies, which is where a lot of neighbour noise sits.
Is polyester tile different from wedge foam?
Yes, in material and fixing, not in the job either can finish. JAMELO is 1 cm polyester, peel-and-stick, about 1.08 m² for £21.99. Saiqiang is vacuum-packed wedge foam with glue that often fails. Both can shorten echo. Neither is a barrier.
Why do the tiles arrive flat?
They are vacuum packed. Reviews of Saiqiang and of the 48-piece pack say you wait or use a hairdryer, and some tiles never recover. One review measured about 15 mm against a 1 inch title. Gluing a flat tile does not finish the expansion on the wall.
Can I use EPS sheets to kill echo?
They are a poor tool for echo. Homebuilding notes that hard foam lacks the density and elasticity a sound insulator wants, and a smooth polystyrene face reflects. Triplast’s 25 mm sheets are a shed lining in the reviews, with a listing lambda from 0.038 W/(m·K).
Is fireproof on the foam title a UK class?
No. The 48-piece title says fireproof, Saiqiang says fire resistant, and JAMELO says fire retardant. None of the files names a Euroclass. One United Kingdom review says the Saiqiang wedges are not fire resistant. Keep foam away from a flue or a heater.
What should I buy if the problem is a cold wall instead?
Name the cold surface first. A radiator on an uninsulated external wall points at reflector foil, not a wedge. A shed you will line with 25 mm polystyrene points at the Triplast pack. A Part L wall is a specified board you will not find in this set. Acoustic tiles do not insulate that wall.
