Grease nipple assortment: what to check before you buy

Updated: 23 October 2026

The boxes shout a piece count and the words M6, M8 and M10. A grease nipple assortment is the drawer for the next machine, and it only helps if the nipple you take out matches the hole. This page is the checklist: name the thread, then the angle the coupler can reach, then how many pieces are actually nipples. Prices for the twelve amazon.co.uk listings are on the [grease nipple comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/grease-nipple). Peter F. read those listings on 21 October 2026, next to UK trade pages that print a pitch. We did not fit these nipples. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a grease nipple assortment is actually for

A grease nipple is a small check valve. Grease passes a spring-loaded ball, and the ball closes so dirt stays out of the joint. An assortment exists because a workshop meets more than one size in a week, not because a larger number on the title is a better part. Trade boxes print the pitch. On 21 October 2026, SOS Agricultural's 200-piece metric kit was £24 excluding VAT and listed M6 x 1, M8 x 1, M8 x 1.25, M10 x 1 and M10 x 1.25. Those tickets are not the twelve amazon.co.uk rows. Most of the captured listings stop at M6, M8 and M10 and a piece count. Measure the old nipple before it goes in the hole. How the threads differ is on the metric or BSP grease nipple page.

Pitch before piece count

Kingfisher's metric fittings page treats the common DIN 71412 hydraulic sizes as M6 x 1, M8 x 1 and M10 x 1, and it sells M8 x 1.25 as a separate part. An M8 x 1 nipple and an M8 x 1.25 nipple can both look like M8 on a title, and the coarser one will start in the finer hole and then tear the thread. The same trap sits near 10 mm: M10 x 1 and 1/8 BSP both measure about that and do not interchange. The only size attributes that print a pitch are the two Nikovoke rows, and each title still says M6, M8 and M10. If the old nipple or the manual says M8 x 1.25, or 1/8 BSP, leave the assortment until the bullet says those words.

Angles, caps and the case

The angle is about the grease gun, not the thread. A straight nipple is enough when the coupler can sit in line with the hole. A 45° or 90° head is for a pin behind a bracket. Changing the angle does not change M8 into M10, and it does not turn a metric thread into BSP. Dust caps are mud covers, not the seal. The seal is the ball and the thread in the housing. Read whether caps sit inside the piece count. ANVINKU's bullet says 160 fittings and 90 caps under a 250-piece title. REJOECE's bullet says 75 nipples, 75 caps and three spanners under a 153-piece title, with red for M6, yellow for M8 and blue for M10. Sort the box on the bench the day it arrives.

How to read a piece count

Subtract the caps, then the tools, and only then compare boxes. Eleechen's title says 153, and the bullet's nipple lines add to 193 before the red caps. MirraSwit's title says 270, and the nipple split adds to 180, with no cap count printed to close the gap. Nadisean's bullets say galvanised steel and the attributes say stainless, so that page has not chosen a metal. Nadinsta's bullet says galvanized iron, and one review describes a soft body that tore when the gun was pulled sideways. The five-piece straight pack is the better buy when you have one measured size, and the worse buy when the title, the size line and the piece count disagree, which is the Nikovoke capture.

Common questions

Is a 250-piece kit more useful than a 100-piece kit?
Only after you remove the caps. ANVINKU's 250 is 160 fittings plus 90 caps. A 100-piece title can be nipples plus caps, as on the Nadisean bullet that sums to 65 nipples and 35 red caps. More pieces help when you use three angles and you lose heads. They do not help when the extra pieces are the wrong pitch.
What does M6 M8 M10 leave out?
It leaves out the pitch and any inch thread. Kingfisher's common DIN 71412 sizes are M6 x 1, M8 x 1 and M10 x 1, and M8 x 1.25 is a different part. 1/8 BSP and 1/4-28 will not safely replace a metric nipple that merely looks similar. A title that stops at those three diameters has not chosen.
Do I need straight, 45° and 90° nipples?
You need the angle that lets the coupler sit on the head. Straight is enough for an open pin. A 45° or 90° head is for a blocked approach, and it uses the same thread as the straight nipple in a proper kit. If the listing only says angled, you do not know which of those two you will get.
Are plastic caps part of the seal?
No. The ball and the seated thread keep grease in and grit out. A plastic cap, sometimes called a red nut on these listings, keeps dried mud off the head so the next service can find it. Caps are worth having on plant that works in soil. They are also the easiest way for a piece count to look larger than the nipple count.
Why do compartment boxes arrive mixed?
The dividers are often loose inserts, and a courier trip knocks them out. UK reviews on IVhomeshop mention a jumbled box and missing M8 sets. ANVINKU reviews mention a cracked case and dividers that came out. A transparent box with removable dividers, as Nadisean describes, still needs a sort on the bench. Label the compartments if the box will live in a van.
