Duct tape vs gaffer tape

Updated: 23 October 2026

You searched for gaffa because a cable has to cross the hall, or a shiny black roll is titled gaffer and you want it off the skirting without a grey smear. Duct tape vs gaffer tape is a difference of face and adhesive, not of spelling. The eleven amazon.co.uk listings were read on 21 October 2026, plus RS and UK trade notes. There is no residue lab. Prices are shelf prices in pounds. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The rolls are on the [duct tape comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/duct-tape).

The names are not the product

Gaffer, gaffa and duck land in the same search because people say them for any cloth roll. Duck, in this set, is a brand of duct tape: the black 48 mm roll at £3.11, not a third species. Gaffa is the same word as gaffer in UK speech. It is not proof that the roll is the matte tape a lighting hire company means. ZVANI's three-pack is titled gaffer tape, 48 mm by 45 m, at £7.79. Reviews say it is not proper gaffer and that it can split into two layers. Stymiya's listings use gaff or gaffa on cloth rolls that remain duct tape. If the face is glossy polyethylene, treat it as duct tape however the title is spelled.

Cloth face, shine and adhesive

Both tapes are cloth and both can tear by hand. That shared trick is why the names collapsed. Duct tape, in the RS account, is plastic-coated cloth with a more aggressive rubber adhesive. Gaffer is usually a matte cloth, made so it lifts with less fight. Those notes are not a lab result for these ASINs. A mirror-like polyethylene face is duct tape. A dull cloth face is the gaffer pattern, and you still read the maker's residue note. Gaffer is the tape for a cable you will lift. It is the worse choice for a wet split you will leave outside. Pressure and peel are on how to use duct tape. That method does not convert one product into the other.

Residue and heat

No tape here is guaranteed to leave nothing behind. GTSE says heat and time raise the residue risk even for products sold as cleaner to remove. Duct tape is the messier of the two in the RS comparison. Duck prints a clean-removal time of 21 days, and the saved reviews do not test it. 3M 1900 has a review that mentions residue if the tape is left on. ZVANI has one no-residue claim beside reviews that reject the gaffer title. Gorilla UK says gentle heat only on hard non-porous surfaces, and no heat on paint, plastic or vinyl.

When to choose which

Choose gaffer when you will lift the tape the same day, such as a cable across a hall. The condition is a matte cloth sold as gaffer. None of the eleven listings is that matte stage tape. ZVANI is the clearest mistake, at £7.79, because the title says gaffer and the reviews say it is not. Choose duct tape when the tape can stay and residue is acceptable. Duck at £3.11 for 48 mm by 18.2 m is the top pick for that ordinary job. 3M 1900 at £5.16 for 50 m is the best value long roll. A soaked tarp is only a hold, which duct tape for outdoor repairs covers, and gaffer is not the upgrade for rain.

Common questions

Is gaffer tape the same as duct tape?
No. Gaffer is usually matte cloth with a less aggressive adhesive, made to lift. Duct tape is plastic-coated cloth with a stickier rubber adhesive and a shiny face. They both tear by hand, which is why the names get swapped. A shared scrim does not make the adhesive the same. If clean removal is why you are shopping, they are different products.
Why do amazon titles say gaffa on shiny rolls?
Because the search word sells, and gaffa is only a spelling of gaffer. ZVANI's three-pack is titled gaffer, and reviews say it is not proper gaffer. Stymiya uses gaff or gaffa on cloth duct rolls. A shiny polyethylene face is duct tape whatever the first line says.
Which leaves less residue?
Gaffer is made to leave less, and RS describes duct tape's adhesive as the messier one. Neither is a promise. GTSE notes that heat and time increase residue even on tapes sold as cleaner. Duck's 21-day figure is untested in the saved reviews. For a floor you must hand back, do not rely on a duct-tape bullet.
Which is better on a cable run you must lift?
Gaffer, and only a matte roll sold for that job. None of these eleven listings is stage gaffer. ZVANI's title is the one to refuse for a cable you will peel tonight. If the cable can stay bundled for weeks, duct tape is a reasonable hold. If it must come off, it is the wrong tape.
Which is better for a wet temporary patch?
Duct tape, because the plastic face is the water-resistant side of the pair. Even then, water resistant is not a plumbing seal. Duck's waterproof line did not stop a car-roof patch from needing epoxy. Dry the surface, press firmly, and treat the patch as temporary. Rain on a tent fly is a different product again, and gaffer is not the outdoor upgrade.
What should I buy from this set if I need clean removal?
Nothing, if clean removal is the whole point. This set is duct tape, including the rolls titled gaffa. Buy a matte gaffer whose listing shows the cloth face and a removal condition you can read. If residue is acceptable, Duck's 48 mm roll is the ordinary pick, and 3M 1900 at £5.16 for 50 m is the long roll.
