Duct tape buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a parcel to close, or a garden cover to hold until the weekend, and the amazon.co.uk title says heavy duty, waterproof and no residue. A duct tape buying guide is the order to use before you trust those words: the job, then a width and a length you can read, then how the cloth tears, then what the listing really says about water. The eleven saved listings were read on 21 October 2026, using amazon.co.uk prices in pounds. This is not a lab test. A purchase through our links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Start with the job, not the word heavy duty

Cloth duct tape is polyethylene over a fabric scrim with a rubber adhesive. RS describes that build. It is a fair tool for cardboard, for bundling a cable that can stay stuck, and for a temporary patch on a clean, dry surface. It is a poor tool when you must lift the tape the same day from paint or a hired floor. Heavy duty does not tell you which job you have. A carton flap is about the width of a 48 mm strip. The Gorilla handy roll is 25 mm by 9 m for £4.00, and reviews call it about the width of ordinary sticky tape. If the surface is finished emulsion, stop. When the job is a floor cable you will remove tonight, read duct tape versus gaffer tape.

Width and metres you can check

Everyday cloth tape here is about 48–50 mm wide. Duck's black roll is 48 mm by 18.2 m at £3.11. 3M Value Duct Tape 1900 is 50 mm by 50 m at £5.16. Stick Well is 48 mm by 50 m at £5.04. The Gorilla handy roll is the exception: 25 mm and only 9 m, about 44p per metre. PixiPals is the length clash to remember. The title says 75 m and also 25 m per roll, the size name says 48 mm by 45 m, and reviews report about 25 m or 40 m. At £8.49 you cannot know the pence per metre until one number wins. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects goods to be as described.

Tear, water and residue as stated

A sound scrim tears across the roll. A thin one often splits down the length. Reviews on Crimson, ZVANI and the Stymiya three-pack describe that split. If the comments say the tape shreds, assume you will cut it, even when the bullet says hand tear. Stick Well says waterproof and also tells you to avoid wet, rough surfaces such as concrete. Duck says waterproof, and a car-roof patch later needed epoxy. RS is plain that cloth tape on real ductwork is only a short-term fix. When the job is rain on a tarp, the limit is on duct tape for outdoor repairs. PixiPals, Stymiya and Enyisa print no residue, while saved reviews do not confirm clean removal.

Grade and pence per metre

3M's UK pages put 1900 in the value, non-critical band, with 60°C on the category page. The December 2008 UK data sheet gives adhesion of 15 N/25 mm and a 60°C maximum. The amazon.co.uk row shows 147 micron. Gorilla UK describes the tape as temporary once applied, roughly 0°C to 65.5°C, and not a plumbing, electrical or structural repair. Pence per metre is a rule of thumb, not a measured yield. Duck at £3.11 for 18.2 m is the cheapest single roll. Stick Well at £5.04 and 3M at £5.16 each offer about 50 m, near 10p a metre, with 117 reviews against 6,261. Enyisa at £13.99 is 5.0 from one review. That is a craft set.

Common questions

What width should I buy for boxes and patches?
For a carton seam, buy about 48–50 mm. Duck at 48 mm, 3M 1900 at 50 mm and Stick Well at 48 mm are the clear full-width rolls in this set. The Gorilla handy roll is 25 mm by 9 m, so it is the wrong default when the flap is wider than the strip.
Why is one Gorilla roll only 25 mm?
This ASIN is the handy roll, 25 mm by 9 m at £4.00, not a 48 mm workshop roll of the same brand. Gorilla UK still describes the tape as a temporary repair, about 0°C to 65.5°C once applied, and not a plumbing or electrical fix. Buy it when the narrow width is what you wanted.
How do I check metres when the title and the size field disagree?
Read the title, the size name and the unit count as three lines, then a review that measured the roll. PixiPals at £8.49 says 75 m and 25 m per roll in the title, 48 mm by 45 m in the size name, and reviews talk about 25 m or 40 m. If those lines disagree, you do not yet know the price per metre.
Does heavy duty mean a thicker scrim?
Not in this set. Crimson's titles say heavy duty, and several reviews call the 12-packs thinner than branded duct tape. 3M labels 1900 as value tape for non-critical work, at 147 micron on the amazon.co.uk technicals. The word on the title does not settle which roll arrived.
Can I trust no residue or waterproof on the title?
Treat both as claims, not results. Reviews here mention residue, a car-roof patch that later needed epoxy, and glue that crept in sun on the silver Crimson pack. Stick Well says waterproof and also tells you to keep the tape off wet, rough surfaces. A no-residue bullet is not confirmed by the saved reviews.
