Soft close drawer runners

Updated: 23 October 2026

The cutlery drawer slams when you let go. You are deciding whether soft close drawer runners are worth the extra pounds on a side-mount pair, or whether a plain slide is the better buy. A damper slows the last part of the travel. It is not a stronger runner, and it can fail if the sides are twisted. The [drawer runners comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/drawer-runners) only shows whether a pair states a damper. This page is the mechanism. Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 19 October 2026. We did not lab-test the dampers, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the damper actually does

A normal ball-bearing slide runs until the steel stops it. Self-close, in Furnica's damping note, is a spring or a ramp that pulls the drawer in. Soft close adds a cylinder. Furnica puts the damped part in roughly the last 30–50 mm. A roller's end lock is a different part. The REJS white pair, at about £4.99, has a sliding end lock so the drawer does not fall out. That lock is not a hydraulic damper. If the packet only says self close, read whether you are buying a spring, a ramp, or a cylinder.

The extra pounds in this set

The plain pair here is AOLISHENG's silver 300 mm slide at about £8.38, titled 45 kg, with soft close not stated. The two damped 300 mm pairs are both about £12.99. That is about four pounds more for the cylinder, not a different load class. FURNIWARE is 4.7 from 19 reviews. Those UK texts praise the damper and do not repeat a failure. AOLISHENG's black pair is the same price and 4.2 from 1,106 reviews. The bullet describes an inward pull and a handle still required, and a length of 298.5 mm. UK reviews say it does not always catch. HBL's damped pair is about £15.99 at 450 mm, and one UK note lost the soft close after a day. Which name suits a 300 mm drawer is on the best drawer runners page.

When it sticks or will not catch

A drawer that stops short, or that needs a hard pull, is an alignment fault until you have proved otherwise. Colin Home Service says you check for an obstruction and that the drawer is seated before you blame the damper. If the sides are twisted, one catch fires and the other does not. After that, Furnica describes a catch that fired early, or a damper that has leaked. Their reset is to take the drawer off and pull the carriage forward until it clicks, on both sides. It is not a verified fix for AOLISHENG or HBL. A leaked cylinder will not refill itself.

What it does not do

Soft close does not make the slide stronger. The silver pair and the damped 300 mm pairs are still in the ordinary side-mount band. A damper does not turn a 20 kg roller into a pan-drawer runner, and it does not add a lock. SCF Hardware's line that soft close is safer for small fingers is a seller-style comfort claim, not a safety certification. A damped drawer can still pinch if a child pulls against the spring or if the catch fails and the drawer slams. It is not a child-safety device. It is also not push-to-open. No listing here is push-to-open, and this comparison does not include a clip-on for the silver AOLISHENG pair. Aspin Collins treats an integrated damper as the part you choose when you buy.

Common questions

Is a self-closing roller the same thing?
No. The REJS pair at about £4.99 has a sliding end lock so the drawer does not fall out, and plastic wheels. That is not a hydraulic damper, and it will not give you the slowed finish of a soft-close slide. If the title only says self-closing, check whether you are looking at a lock, a spring, or a cylinder before you compare the price with a damped pair at about £12.99.
How much more does soft close cost in this set?
About four pounds on the 19 October 2026 snapshots: about £8.38 for the silver AOLISHENG pair with no damper stated, and about £12.99 for FURNIWARE or the black AOLISHENG pair with dampers. HBL's hydraulic pair is about £15.99 and it is 450 mm. The extra buys the cylinder, not a higher kilogram.
Why does a soft-close drawer need a hard pull?
The black AOLISHENG bullet says the closed runner pulls inward and a handle is still required. UK reviews also call that pair hard to open and say it does not always catch. A twisted cabinet does the same thing, because one catch fires and the other does not. Level the sides before you decide the damper has failed. A leaked cylinder will not improve with a harder tug.
The drawer stops short of closed. What do I check?
Check for an obstruction and that the drawer is seated, as Colin Home Service suggests, before you blame the damper. Then check that both runners share one level line. Furnica's reset, drawer off and carriage pulled forward until it clicks on both sides, is a general method, not a proved fix for these listings. If the soft close died after a day, as one HBL review describes, a reset will not refill the cylinder.
Which soft-close pair has the quieter UK review record?
FURNIWARE at about £12.99, 4.7 from 19 reviews. The UK texts we read praise the damper and do not repeat a failure. That sample is small, and one buyer had not fitted the pair, so it is not a long trial. The black AOLISHENG pair has 1,106 reviews at 4.2 and repeated complaints that the action is clunky or does not catch.
