Drawer runners buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a drawer on the floor, the old runner in one hand, and an amazon.co.uk page that ranks a 10 kg chest pack next to a 45 kg kitchen slide. This drawer runners buying guide is the order we use before brand names: match the family, then a length that fits inside the cabinet, then a pair rating that covers the loaded drawer. The [drawer runners comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/drawer-runners) holds the prices and star lines from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the runner you removed

Three families turn up in UK replacement notes, and they do not share a scale. T&S Architectural's table of 15 July 2022 puts a 17 mm groove runner at about 10 kg, a white roller at about 17–20 kg, and a side-mount ball-bearing slide from the mid-30 kg range upward. Furnica adds the shape: rollers are usually partial extension with plastic wheels, and ball-bearing slides are telescopic, often full extension. Look at the part you took out. A slot is a groove runner, and that job stays on the 17 mm groove drawer runners page. A white wheel on a bottom rail is a roller. A steel telescope on the side is the kitchen slide. REJS at about £4.99 is stated at 20 kg. The groove packs here are about 10 kg. A similar star line does not put a chest runner under a pan drawer.

Extension and length

Full extension brings the drawer box out so you can reach the back. Partial or single extension leaves the rear inside the cabinet. That is fair for socks in a chest and poor for saucepans. A title can say full extension while another row on the same page says part extension. Length means the closed length, and it has to fit the clear internal depth. The outside of the unit and the drawer front are the wrong rulers. Eurofit Direct's guide, written for its own runners, says you take the longest runner that fits and you step down if the depth falls between two lengths. A runner longer than the internal depth stops the drawer shutting. Do not copy Eurofit's 26 mm or 38.4 mm width deductions onto AOLISHENG or REGUDA.

Load, then the cabinet

The kilogram on a runner is the moving load of the drawer plus the contents, not the crockery on its own. A useful UK split, from T&S and Hettich rather than a test of these listings, is about 10 kg for a 17 mm groove, roughly 17–25 kg for a typical roller, and about 35–45 kg for a standard side-mount pair. Hill & May's remark that a wide pan drawer can pass 30 kg is a kitchen-maker rule of thumb. None of the titles here is a certificate. BS EN 15338:2024 is a frame test method, not a mark on these listings. HBL's 450 mm pair says 50 kg in the title and 200 pounds, about 90 kg, on the capacity row. About 45 kg is the ordinary side-mount band in those trade notes, not a separate heavy-duty class.

Features after the family is right

Soft close and a lock come after family, length, and load. A damper slows the last part of the close. It does not raise the kilogram, and it is another part that can fail. In this set the step from the AOLISHENG silver pair, with no damper stated, to a damped 300 mm pair is the move from about £8.38 to about £12.99. Pay it when the sides are square and you want the drawer to stop slamming. A lock is a separate extra. REGUDA's pair at about £45.60 is the locking listing here, titled 111 kg, for a pull-out you want held open or shut. Screws are the last check: REJS does not include them, and several side-mount bullets do.

Common questions

What does full extension mean, and when is partial enough?
Full extension lets the drawer box come out so the back is reachable. Partial extension leaves the rear inside the cabinet. That is enough for a shallow chest drawer. It is the wrong choice for a pan drawer, where you need the back corner.
What load should a kitchen drawer have?
Count the drawer and the contents together. Trade notes used here put a standard side-mount pair around 35–45 kg. Hill & May's remark that a wide pan drawer can pass 30 kg is a kitchen-maker rule of thumb, not a test of these listings. A 10 kg groove runner is for a slotted chest.
Is 45 kg the same thing as heavy duty?
About 45 kg is the ordinary side-mount band in the T&S and Hettich notes, not a separate heavy-duty class. In this set the AOLISHENG silver pair is titled 45 kg at about £8.38. REGUDA without a lock is titled 68 kg at about £18.02, and the locking pair is titled 111 kg at about £45.60. Those are seller figures.
Why do two numbers on one listing disagree?
Titles and specification rows are often written separately. HBL's 450 mm pair at about £15.99 says 50 kg in the title and 200 pounds, about 90 kg, in the capacity row. NBYTLT at about £44.99 carries a 120 kg title and three length lines that do not resolve. Use the figure you can check on the runner in your hand.
Does a higher star rating mean a stronger runner?
No. Emuca's groove pack has thousands of reviews at about 10 kg. A side-mount pair with fewer reviews can still be the 45 kg family. The star line says how buyers scored that listing. It does not move a runner from one load band to another.
