Spray de-icer overnight to stop ice

Updated: 23 October 2026

You leave the car on the street, the forecast says frost, and a bottle says you can spray de-icer overnight to stop ice and drive away at dawn. In this set only CarPlan Demon Ice is sold as both a preventer and a morning melt. A normal trigger or aerosol does not make the same promise. The film is worth trying on a dry evening with a short gap until you need the car. Rain still takes it off. Prices are on the [de-icer comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/de-icer). Peter F., DIY & tools editor, used the amazon.co.uk lines on 21 October 2026, not a frost trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a night spray is claiming

A night spray is a film on dry glass so ice has less to grip. Demon Ice’s directions on MyMotorWorld say shake, spray the night before, and do not wipe it off. That page states −20°C and a cherry scent. “No ice will form” and “just drive away” go further than those directions. The same page says rain washes the film off and frost can return. Tetrosyl Express repeats the method and leaves the rain sentence out. The limit stays. Prestone says a normal de-icer the night before may ease the scrape and will not stop ice forming. That is not a reason to spray Autoglym or Blue Star at dusk. Halfords sells a separate 2-in-1 at −25°C. It is not an ASIN here.

How Demon Ice says to use it

Shake the bottle, spray dry glass, and leave the liquid where it lands. Wipe it off and you have removed the film. Both maker pages send you back to the wipers and the screenwash. Side glass needs a squeegee, so “drive away” is not the whole car. Heavy snow is a morning melt: knock it off, spray from the top, then use the wipers. Windows, mirrors, lamps and plates stay on the how to use de-icer page. Cherry is the scent. It does not change the job. One listing ranks under antifreeze and coolants. That category is not a licence to pour the bottle into the cooling system.

When the film fails

A light coat on dry glass, left for a few hours, left some cars clearer. The same bottle also melted thick ice as a morning de-icer, and that is the half the reviews trust more. A short dry gap is not evidence for a car left from mid-afternoon until the school run. Ice still formed after rain. A generous coat at 3pm was gone by the end of a long shift. Several reviewers call it a better melt than a film. Trusted Products still needed a scrape on light frost, and heavier frost barely moved. That is one site, not a lab. A fine mist or a leak can mean the film was never laid.

Which bottle, and who should skip it

The clearer pack is two 1 litre triggers at £8.00, model CDI002, 2.28 kg, 4.3 from 480 reviews, cherry, stated −20°C. The title says 1 litre × 2. Triggers clog or mist, and thicker ice needs repeat coats. The other listing is £15.49, 4.2 from 2,517 reviews, the same −20°C and cherry scent. The title says 1 litre (pack of 1) (6) and the weight is 1.08 kg, part CDI001. Do not assume six litres. You would be paying for the larger sample. Skip both if your nights are usually wet, or if you only need a morning melt. That morning bottle is the best de-icer UK page. Rain is the stop.

Common questions

Can I spray de-icer the night before and skip the morning scrape?
You can spray Demon Ice on dry glass the night before, and you should still look in the morning. The directions say shake, apply, do not wipe the film off, then use the wipers and screenwash. Side glass needs a squeegee. Reviews that match a clear car are short, dry gaps. Rain, or a coat left from mid-afternoon, left ice. “Just drive away” is the slogan, not the instruction.
What if it rains or snows after I spray?
Rain or other precipitation washes the film off, and frost can return. That sentence is on MyMotorWorld’s directions. Tetrosyl Express omits it in a shorter block, which does not remove the limit. Snow on the glass is a morning job: knock it off, then spray from the top if you are melting rather than preventing. A wet forecast is a reason to clear the car at dawn instead.
Is a normal trigger or aerosol a pre-icer?
No. In this set the night-film claim belongs to Demon Ice. Prestone says a normal de-icer the night before may ease the scrape and will not entirely stop ice forming. Autoglym and Blue Star are morning melts. Spraying them at dusk borrows a promise those listings do not make. A cover is a physical barrier, and it is a different product.
Which of the two Demon Ice listings am I buying?
The two-pack is two labelled litres at £8.00, 4.3 from 480 reviews, listed at 2.28 kg. The other listing is £15.49, 4.2 from 2,517 reviews, titled 1 litre (pack of 1) (6) at 1.08 kg. Do not read the (6) as six litres. The cheaper row is the one whose pack count and weight agree. The dearer row is the larger review sample. Confirm the litres on the page before you pay.
Will I still need the wipers or a scraper?
Yes. Both maker pages send you to the wipers and the screenwash, and side glass is called out for a squeegee. One published UK trial still needed a scrape on light frost, and heavier frost barely moved. That is one site, not a lab. If the screen is iced, use the morning order on the how-to page rather than hoping the film finished the job.
Does the cherry smell mean a different job, and why is one listing under antifreeze?
Cherry is the scent on the bullets. Reviews mention it as less harsh, not as a different job. The £15.49 listing ranks in antifreeze and coolants. That is a best-seller category on amazon.co.uk. The title is still a glass ice preventer and de-icer. Do not put it in the cooling system because the rank sits there.
