How to lift a bulk bag without dragging a full sack

Updated: 23 October 2026

The mouth has folded in, and the loops look like one bunch for a single hook. That is how a builders' bag gets a hole in the base. This page is how to lift a bulk bag you already have: keep the mouth open, use every loop, and leave the sack until a machine can take it. It does not rank the six bags on the [bulk bag comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/bulk-bag). The label checks are the [bulk bag buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/bulk-bag/sub/bulk-bag-buying-guide). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The reading used HSE guidance and CPA TIN 026 on 22 October 2026.

Keep the mouth open

Woven polypropylene does not stand like a rigid bin. On the DIVCHI listings, reviewers describe the mouth collapsing while they shovel. A higher star rating does not stiffen that fabric. If you are filling alone, the rim folds in. A second person holding two opposite loops, or a simple prop across the rim, is the practical answer. It is not a feature these listings promise. Fill only what you can move without dragging. A one-tonne bag stated at 1,000 kg is not a target you have to hit. Stop while you can still see the loops and the bag is a shape a machine can pick up.

Look before you lift

Before the first lift, walk around the bag. HSE guidance L113 says not to use a flexible bulk container if the suspension loops are damaged. Look for cuts, pulled stitching, and fabric that has gone powdery in the sun. The 90 cm A&A listing does not number the loops, so you count what arrived. Airtech names four 30 cm side-seam loops. DIVCHI says corner loops and does not give a count. If a loop is missing, frayed, or stitched through a tear, that bag does not go on a machine. A 5:1 print is the single-trip class in CPA TIN 026, not a second life after the stitching has opened. Which listing prints what is on the best builders bulk bag page.

All the loops, bag kept low

Put every loop onto the machine, spread as the bag was built, not gathered onto one hook. CPA TIN 026 says to use all the loops and not to bunch them. One hook loads one stitch line. Keep people out from under the bag. HSE treats the sack as the load and says not to lift if you doubt the weight. A filled bag at 1,000 kg is not a manual lift, and neither is a full half-tonne at 500 kg. On the half-tonne listing, one reviewer needed the digger arm rather than a fully stretched reach. Keep the bag low and close to the machine, and put it down if the hydraulics hesitate. If a forklift, crane, sling or frame does the lift at work, LOLER sits on that equipment. This page does not tell a householder to book that examination for garden waste.

Do not drag the base

Dragging is the failure UK reviews repeat. Comments on more than one ASIN tie a hole in the base to pulling a loaded bag across patio, gravel or a threshold. If the bag will not lift, it stays where it was filled. Dragging it on a sheet is still dragging if the base is what wears through. A DIVCHI reviewer said the sides split unless two bags were nested. That is one report, not a rated method and not a 2,000 kg system. On the road, GOV.UK guidance says to strap a bulk bag through the lifting eyelets and to cover an open bag so the contents cannot blow out. That is transport, not a filling trick.

When you stop and call someone competent

Stop and use a competent person when the loops are damaged, when you doubt the weight, when the lift is a crane or a work machine, or when a torn 5:1 bag is about to be hung up anyway. Leave the sack where it was filled until that person takes the lift. Do not drag it across the patio while you wait.

Common questions

Can I put all four loops on one hook?
No. CPA TIN 026 tells you to use all the loops and not to gather them on one hook. One hook loads one point. Spread the loops the way the bag is built. If the listing did not number the loops, count the ones on the bag in your hands and use all of them.
Is dragging across the patio acceptable if the bag is strong?
No. Reviews link dragging to holes in the base, on more than one of these listings. The patio is an abrasive surface. Lift the bag, or leave it where it is until it can be lifted. A heavy-duty sentence on a title is not a sled.
When is a full bag a machine lift?
When it is filled towards the printed safe working load. A 1,000 kg bag is not a manual lift, and a full 500 kg bag is not one either. HSE treats the bag as the load. If you doubt the weight, do not lift it. Hands are for shovelling, not for carrying the sack.
What should I check before the first lift?
Damaged loops, cuts, opened stitching, and fabric that has powdered in sunlight. HSE L113 says not to use a flexible bulk container with damaged suspension loops. Count the loops that actually arrived. Confirm you are not standing under the bag and that every loop will take the lift.
Does a 5:1 bag get a second lift on a site?
CPA TIN 026 treats 5:1 as a single trip. A second lift of the same filled bag is already outside that class, and a damaged 5:1 bag should not be hung up to see. These listings do not print 6:1 or 8:1. Do not promote a bag into a reusable class because it survived the drive.
Where do I stop and call a competent person?
When a crane, forklift, sling or frame will do the lift at work, when you doubt the weight, when a loop is damaged, or when someone wants to reuse a torn 5:1 bag. This page does not replace a competent person, and it does not tell a householder to book a LOLER examination for garden waste moved by hand to the car.
