Parts organiser for a van

Updated: 23 October 2026

The box is on the floor of the van, the first corner throws it onto its side, and by the time you open it the 4 mm screws are in with the 5 mm. A parts organiser for van use has to survive that tip, a wet tailgate, and sometimes a second case clipped to the first. What belongs in the cab is a narrower question than which box is best on a shed shelf. The full table is the [assortment box comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/assortment-box). What a van does to a parts box

A cupboard only asks a box to sit still. A van asks it to stay shut while it slides, to keep sizes apart when it lands on a corner, and to shrug off rain on the latch. None of these plastic cases is a load-rated cargo system. If the question is how to strap a stack into a van, that is a restraint problem, not a compartment problem. The failure you notice first is mixing. Dividers that let small parts slip underneath, which SortMaster reviewers describe, will do it faster after a speed bump. Metal latches are what reviewers of the deeper Stanley case say they prefer. General size shopping, including the Amtech table that claims 81 cm, stays in the screw organiser buying guide.

Waterproof, water resistant and IP53

In this set the van candidate is the Stanley FatMax 1-97-518. The amazon.co.uk listing says waterproof and describes a seal against water, rust and dust. Stanley’s UK page for that model rates it IP53, with metal latches and 10 removable cups. IP53 is limited dust protection and water sprayed on the enclosure. Halfords lists a Bunker Load-Up organiser at £24.99 with a stated IP65, and that product is not an ASIN in this set. Do not upgrade the FatMax from IP53 because the amazon dropdown says waterproof. The Amtech S6463 and the Kistenberg ten-pack are both marked not water resistant. The SortMaster listing says waterproof, and Stanley’s UK page for the 1-94-745 does not publish an IP rating.

Latches, weight and clipping

Metal latches are the FatMax pattern if the case is opened on site every day. One later FatMax order was returned because it arrived with plastic clasps and no seal. Look at the latches on the unit in your hand. Clipping is family only. FatMax side latches join other FatMax organisers. SortMaster side latches join similar SortMaster organisers. Nothing on Stanley’s pages says either family clips to DeWalt TSTAK or to Milwaukee. Two FatMax cases are about 4 kg before the screws go in. The home shortlist, where the SortMaster is the top pick at about £9.99, is on the best parts organiser page. That home result does not promote it to a wet-van seal.

What to keep in the workshop

The ZJW is about 22.5 × 15.5 × 5.5 cm at £7.99, and reviewers say it is smaller than they expected. A ten-pack of shallow boxes is a workshop delivery. The Kistenberg set is about £53.89 for 10 clear NORS14 boxes, listed as not water resistant. If you want several cases on the road, buy two of a family that clips. The Amtech is listed as not water resistant, and very small parts can migrate, which a corner in the van will encourage. What goes in the van is one latched case you have tilted in the drive, with a water claim you can point at, and a second case only if it is the same family.

Common questions

Which box in this set is the sensible van choice?
The Stanley FatMax 1-97-518, at about £22.79, with 10 removable cups, metal latches and IP53 on Stanley’s UK page. The amazon listing says waterproof. Read that as spray, not as a dunk. Choose the SortMaster only for a dry van, and only if you accept that its waterproof line has no IP code behind it. The Amtech is ruled out by its own not water resistant line.
Is waterproof the same as IP65?
No. IP65 is a stated rating on other products, such as the Halfords Bunker Load-Up at £24.99, which is not one of the boxes in this set. The FatMax code we can cite is IP53, from Stanley’s UK page for model 1-97-518. A listing that only says waterproof, with no code, has not told you either number. Do not treat the two words as equals.
Can I leave it in the rain all day?
Do not plan on it. IP53 covers water spray, not sitting in pooled water on a roof rack or in a flooded footwell. One FatMax reviewer reported a dry interior after use in rain, which is one account of spray, not a soak test. If the van leaks onto the box for hours, bring the case inside or step up to a product whose page actually prints a higher IP code.
Will several cases clip together in the van?
FatMax side latches are for other FatMax organisers. SortMaster side latches are for similar SortMaster organisers. They are not a shared clip across brands, and they are not a DeWalt fitting. Two FatMax cases are about 4 kg empty, using the 2 kg listing weight. Clip them if you will restrain the pair. Do not build a tower and hope the latches are a cargo strap.
Is a ten-pack of shallow boxes a van kit?
No. The Kistenberg pack is ten separate shallow boxes at about £53.89, listed as not water resistant, with review texts about short quantity, cracked lids and a stacking dispute. That is a shelf delivery for a workshop. For the van, two cases that clip in one family are simpler than ten lids. Count a ten-pack on the day it arrives, and keep it indoors.
