Screw organiser buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at a shed shelf, or the back of a van door, with a drawer of mixed wood screws and a listing that prints two sizes for the same box. A screw organiser buying guide should make three things clear before you compare brands: which centimetre line you can trust, whether the cells are dividers or cups, and what the water words actually mean. The ranked shortlist of nine amazon.co.uk cases sits on the [assortment box comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/assortment-box). This page stays on the checks and the conflicts. If you buy through our links, a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. This is not a lab test. Updated 23 October 2026.

What you are actually buying

An assortment box, in the sense a UK DIY shopper means it, is an empty lidded plastic case that keeps screws, nuts, bolts, nails and other small fixings in separate cells. Honest outer sizes in this set run from about 22 cm to about 44 cm. Shelf prices on the stored amazon.co.uk listings run from about £7.99 to about £22.79 for a single case, and about £53.89 for a pack of ten. The lid and the latches have to stop parts hopping the walls. Compartment count alone does not do that.

Size and compartment count

Start with the shelf, not with the largest number in the technical table. Keep the dimension that the bullets and the reviews agree on. The Amtech S6463 bullets say 320 × 260 × 80 mm. The technical table on the same amazon.co.uk listing says 81.3 × 20.3 × 66 cm. Reviewers say the box that arrived was much smaller than that table. Trust the millimetre line. The SortMaster 1-94-745 bullets and Stanley’s UK page both describe 12 compartments and about 44.2 × 32.7 × 9.2 cm. The listing table’s one compartment and 1 mg lines are not usable.

Dividers, cups, lids and latches

Two layouts cover almost every case in this set. A divider grid, sometimes double-sided, keeps many small sizes in a shallow body. Removable cups let you lift one bin to the bench while the lid holds the rest. The double-sided organiser or removable cups page stays on that choice. SortMaster reviewers say small items slip under movable dividers. Amtech reviewers say the partitions adjust in one direction only. Metal latches are the FatMax 1-97-518 pattern. Side latches are family-specific. Stanley’s pages say SortMaster clips to similar SortMaster organisers and FatMax clips to other FatMax units. They do not fit DeWalt or Milwaukee. If the van is the workplace, the parts organiser for a van page takes the rain and the clip question further.

Water words and your rights if it arrives wrong

Read the water line as a word, not as a promise of a dry van. Not water resistant is what the Amtech S6463 listing and the Kistenberg ten-pack both say. Water resistant and waterproof appear on other pages in this set without an IP code. The only published code we can cite here is IP53 on Stanley’s UK page for the FatMax 1-97-518. IP53 is spray, not immersion. The amazon.co.uk FatMax listing says waterproof. A cracked latch or a ten-pack that arrives as one box is a quality and description problem. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects satisfactory quality, and section 11 expects a match to the description. Use the seller’s returns route on amazon.co.uk. Small fixings are a choking hazard, so keep a latched box away from young children.

Common questions

What size box do I need for wood screws?
Most household wood screws, from a short 3.5 mm up to a common 5 × 70 mm, fit a cell that is a few centimetres across if you keep one size in each cell. A case about 32 cm long, such as the Amtech bullets at 320 × 260 × 80 mm, holds many of those sizes. A 22 cm box only holds the short ones, and reviewers of the ZJW say it feels smaller than the title suggests.
Why do two sizes appear on one listing?
The bullets and the technical table are often filled by different fields, and one of them can be wrong. On the Amtech S6463 the bullets say 320 × 260 × 80 mm and the table says 81.3 cm on the long side. Reviews side with the smaller box. On the SortMaster the bullets and Stanley’s UK page say 12 compartments, while the table says one compartment and 1 mg. Keep the line that a second source agrees with, and do not average the two.
What does waterproof mean if there is no IP rating?
On these listings it is a dropdown, not a test report. The FatMax amazon page says waterproof, and Stanley’s UK page for model 1-97-518 says IP53, which covers spray rather than leaving the case in a puddle. Several other boxes only say water resistant, and the Amtech and the Kistenberg pack say they are not water resistant. If the page has no IP code, do not invent one.
Should I buy one box or a pack of ten?
Buy one case if you are replacing a jam-jar drawer. Buy the Kistenberg ten-pack, about £53.89, only if you have counted ten spaces and you will check the parcel, because one review says a single box arrived. Ten shallow boxes are a workshop set. They are a poor substitute for one deep organiser you can carry to the job.
What if the latch arrives broken?
Photograph it and use the amazon.co.uk returns route. A broken clip on arrival, which one ZJW buyer reported, or a cracked Kistenberg lid, is a quality problem under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 rather than something you should glue and hope. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 expect a consumer product to be safe in normal use, and a latch that does not hold is the failure that matters on a parts box.
