Tile levelling system for large format porcelain

Updated: October 2026

You are laying 600 mm porcelain, or a 20 mm patio slab, and a hollow corner shows as a ridge. A tile levelling system for large format porcelain holds neighbouring edges level while the adhesive cures, if the listing includes that thickness and the floor is already flat. The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings from 15 October 2026 and public UK guides, with no lab test of flatness. The wider set is in our [tile levelling system comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/tile-levelling-system). A band near 14 mm misses a 20 mm slab, and no clip flattens the floor.

What changes at 600 mm and at 20 mm

A small ceramic hides a thin bed. Porcelain at 600 × 600 mm, 600 × 900 mm, or 900 × 900 mm shows it at once. The American spelling, tile leveling system for large format tiles, is the same search. RUBI's notes on 600 × 600 mm, 900 × 900 mm, and 1200 × 600 mm say a thin bed shows, so the kit must be rated for that thickness. It will not correct a hollow bed. At 20 mm the stem has to reach through the slab without snapping early. Check the millimetre band before you compare mechanisms on the clip and wedge versus spin page.

The thickness the listing has to include

Two listings include 20 mm. SHAFFER PRO is 3–22 mm, a 4 mm joint, 200 clips and 100 caps, at £35.89 on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026. Flat-Pro is 3–20 mm, a 2 mm joint, 150 clips and 150 caps, at £30.90. SHAFFER reviews include 20 mm slabs at 600 × 900 mm and stems that would not snap. Flat-Pro reviews include 20 mm external porcelain where about half the clips failed to snap. Extra clips near the corners are what Flat-Pro asks for on 20 mm outdoor slabs, and polished tiles are excluded. Rezolite and LOLYSIC state 3–16 mm, XMAO 3–15 mm, Flintronic 5–17 mm, and Fleetise up to 14 mm. Leave a Fleetise pin uncut when 20 mm is too thick for it as sold. Fusion Bliss, EONHANCE, and Bihui TSL50 state no thickness. SHAFFER's 4 mm joint meets the Tile Association's 3 mm floor minimum. Other floors are on the best tile levelling system page.

Back-butter, and keep the clips off the corner

From 600 mm up, BuildWiz says comb the floor and back-butter the tile so the ribs meet a skim coat. Combing the floor alone lets a clip lift the far edge out of a hollow. On a 600 × 600 × 20 mm slab, a second clip chases that lip and leaves the void. The skim is what the pull needs under the tile. Keep clips about 50–100 mm in from the corners, with a third at mid-edge on a longer side. A clip on the corner can chip the arris. The order of bedding and removal is on the how to use tile levelling clips page. Clips pull the edge you have. They leave the screed as it was.

A floor the clips will not flatten, and how many clips you will use

Call a tiler if the floor is clearly outside about 3 mm over 2 m, the SR1 figure discussed here. Make the same call for a tanked wet room, an undesigned heated screed, a solid bed the clips would hold open, or stems that are chipping porcelain. RUBI says the system will not correct an uneven bed. Keep the floor joint at 3 mm or more, as the Tile Association states, and use spacers beside a 2 mm clip. An 80-piece set misses a 24 m² kitchen in one pass. Pack size in general is on the tile levelling system buying guide. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you cut the porcelain, HSE guidance calls for water suppression or M-class extraction and FFP3 where needed, at assigned protection factor 20.

Common questions

Do you need a tile levelling system for 600 × 600 mm porcelain?
A 600 × 600 mm tile shows a thin bed a small ceramic hides, so clips help only while the adhesive cures on a floor that is already flat. RUBI says the system must be rated for the thickness and will not correct an uneven bed. Back-butter the tile, set clips about 50–100 mm in from the corners, and correct a floor outside about 3 mm over 2 m first.
Which kits in this set state a thickness that includes 20 mm?
SHAFFER PRO (B0CWY1GL15) states 3–22 mm and Flat-Pro (B09Y9HH7FL) states 3–20 mm, at £35.89 and £30.90 on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026. Reviews include 20 mm porcelain and stems that failed to snap. Rezolite and LOLYSIC stop at 16 mm, XMAO at 15 mm, Flintronic at 17 mm, and Fleetise at 14 mm. Fusion Bliss, EONHANCE, and Bihui state no thickness.
Should you back-butter large-format porcelain if you are using clips?
Yes, from 600 mm upwards. BuildWiz says comb the floor and skim the back, because a wedge on a hollow bed can lift the far edge. The skim does not turn a 14 mm or 16 mm clip into a 20 mm system, and it does not flatten the floor.
Can levelling clips flatten a floor that is out by more than about 3 mm over 2 m?
They cannot. About 3 mm over 2 m is the SR1 figure discussed for this floor. Clips match edges you have bedded. Ask a tiler if the floor is outside that, if it is a tanked wet room or an undesigned heated screed, if the bed must stay solid, or if stems are chipping porcelain.
How many tile levelling clips do you need per square metre on 600 × 600 mm tiles?
Both figures are rules of thumb. Tradetiler is about 11 clips per square metre on 600 × 600 mm. BuildWiz is about 17, so a 24 m² kitchen is 408 clips, about 470 with a 15 per cent buffer. The same guide uses about 12–13 per square metre on 600 × 1200 mm or 900 × 900 mm tiles.
What lippage figure can you quote without the paid British Standard?
A UK porcelain guide, and a quotation of older BS 5385-1:2009, give 1 mm of lippage on joints under 6 mm and 2 mm on wider joints. BuildWiz attributes that split to BS 5385-3:2024, whose paid text was not opened here. The Tile Association says a floor joint should not be less than 3 mm. Separate spacers can hold that joint while the clip levels the edges.
